Radians (p A24–A27)

1 Definition
Angles can be measured in degrees or in radians. We have the conversion formula

π rad = 180◦

1.1 Examples
1. Convert the angles in degrees to angles in radians

3π ◦
12◦ , 45◦ , 420◦ ,
4

2. Convert the angles in radians to angles in degrees

π 5π 3π
rad, rad, rad, 180 rad

1.2 Special angles

Here is a list of some common angles between 0◦ and 90◦

Degrees 0 30 45 60 90
π π π π
Radians 0 6 4 3 2

The other common angles are multiple of these angles, for example 4 rad is
315◦ .

2 Angles and arcs
Given the arc of a circle of radius R.

If the angle θ is measured in radians (between 0 and 2π) and if L is the length
of the arc then we have
L = θ · R.
In particular the circumference of a circle corresponds to the angle 2π rad so we
have
C = 2πR.
The area of the above section of the disk is
θ 2
A= R .
