A DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS 7

I. Objectives:
At the end of the session, the students must able to;
A. identify the steps in evaluating algebraic expressions
B. Apply the steps in evaluating algebraic expressions
C. Show appreciation in working with group activity
II. Subject Matter:
Topic: Evaluating Algebraic Expression
Reference: E- Math by Orlando A. Oronce and Marulyn O. Mendoza
Instructional Materials: Visual aids, whiteboard and whiteboard marker.
III. Instructional Procedure
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity
A. Daily routine
1. Prayer
Class let’s all stand up,
Before we start, student 1 lead the prayer A student will lead the prayer
Dear God............Amen.

2. Greetings
Good morning class! Good morning Ma’am!

3. Checking of attendance
Is everybody present for today? Yes Ma’am, everybody is
present today.
B. Review
How do you solve multi operation expression? Ma’am, we solve multi
Very good! operation mathematical
expression by the following
the rules of PEMDAS.

And what PEMDAS stands for? The student will state the
answer.
Parenthesis, Exponent,
Multiplication, Division,
That is correct! We solve multi operation expression by Addition and Subtraction.
following the operation of Parenthesis, Exponent,
Multiplication, Division, Addition, and Subtraction.
C. Motivation
Class! Where do we usually hear the word Students will raise their
substitution? hands.
Ma’am, we hear substitution in
basketball, volleyball, etc.

And how do we substitute in basketball? Ma’am, the players is

That`s right. replaced by another player.

Now class we will be having an activity called “sub me

in”.

(The teacher will present the activity “Sub me in”)

Let
A=1 H=8 O=15 V=22
B=2 I=9 P=16 W=23
C=3 J=10 Q=17 X=24
D=4 K=11 R=18 Y=25
E=5 L=12 S=19 Z=26
F=6 M=13 T=20
G=7 N=14 U=21

Find the equivalent value of the given words by

substituting the numerical value above to each letter of
the word and adding all the numerical digits.

For example
H U M B L E
8+ 21+ 13+ 2+ 12+ 5 = 61

Do you get it class? Yes Ma’am.

Are you ready class? Yes Ma’am, we are ready.

Who would like to try the first word? A student will be called to
answer.

KNOWLEDGE K N O W L E
D G E
11+ 14+ 15+ 23+ 12+ 5+
4+ 7 + 5= 96
Now for the second word? H A R D W O
R K
HARDWORK 8+ 1+ 18+ 4+ 23+ 15+
18+ 11= 98

How about the last word? A T T I T

U D E
ATTITUDE 1+ 20+ 20+ 9+ 20+
21+ 4+ 5= 1OO

Very good class, does everyone have the same

answers?

2. Analysis
Ma’am, we find the numerical
What did we do in our activity? value of the given words.
Ma’am, we substitute the
corresponding value in each
letter.
Correct, and how did we find the value of the given
words? Ma’am perform the indicated
operation, we add all the
And then what’s next? value.

Very good. Ma’am we substitute the given

value of x in the equation.

Class, when a number is substitute or replace for the

variable in a given algebraic expression, the
expression takes a numerical value. And finding the
value is what we call “Evaluating the algebraic
expression”.

Let’s do this example.

Evaluate 6x²+3 when
a. x= 0
b. x= -2
c. x=1/2

For letter a, how do we evaluate?

What should we do first?

Correct, Can someone show us how to substitute the A student will be called to
value of x in our equation? substitute the value of x.
6(0)²+3=
Now what is the next step? We perform indicated
operations.
Since we got here a multi operation equation, what
should we do?
Ma’am we follow the rules of
Excellent! Can someone demonstrate on how to apply PEMDAS.
the rules of PEMDAS in our equation? 6(0)²+3=
6(0)+3=
That is correct! 0+3=3

Now for letter b, x=-2. A student will be called to

Who would like to try following the same steps? answer.
6x²+3=
6(-2)²+3=
6(4)+3=
24+3=27

And for the last example, x=1/2 6x²+3=

6(1/2)²+3=
6(1/4)+3=
6/4+3=
Following the rules in adding
dissimilar fractions.
6/4+12/4= 18/4 or 9/2

3. Abstraction 1. Substitute the given value

Now class, in evaluating algebraic expressions, what to the variable.
are the steps that we need to follow? 2. Perform the indicated
operation by following the
rules of PEMDAS
4. Application
Now that you are already know how to evaluate
algebraic expressions, we will be having a group
activity. I will be divide you into two groups. Each group
will choose their leaders. The leader will be the one to
who can ask me about the activity and he is also
responsible for dividing the tasks between the
members of the group.
Each group will be given an activity envelope where
you will find the materials for the activity and the
expression that your group will be going to evaluate.

Now, the group activity will be scored according to this

standard.

Find the value of each expression and write the answer 1. 3x²+2x-3
in the circle. When x = 5 3(5)²+2(5)-3
3(25)+10-3
75+10-3 = 82

2. (x-3)²
2x-1 (5-3)²
(2) = 4

(x-3)² 3x-1─2 3. 2x-11

2(5)-11
10-11 = -1
3x² +2x - 3
4. 3x-1─2
3(5)-1─2
15-1─2
14─2 = 7
Group 2
Find the value of each expression and write the answer Group 2 will give their answer
in the class. 1. 3x²+2x-3
When x = 7 3(7)²+2(7)-3
3(49)+14-3
147+14-3 = 158
2x-11

IV. Evaluation

Class, get a 1\2 sheet of paper and complete

the table by evaluating the given expression.
