Quarter 2 - Module 3:
Characteristics of Vertebrates
and Invertebrates
Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear
learners, can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities,
questions, directions, exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you
to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you
step-by-step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in

each SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module
or if you need to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better
understanding of the lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer
the post-test to self-check your learning. Answer keys are provided for each
activity and test. We trust that you will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are
also provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on
how they can best help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on
any part of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises
and tests. And read the instructions carefully before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in

answering the tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher
or facilitator.

Thank you.
Target

This module was made and written with you in mind. It will help you
develop your skills in determining the different characteristics of vertebrates
and invertebrates.

After going through this module, you are expected to determine the
characteristics of animals with backbones and animals without backbones.
This module will provide you information and activities that will help you
understand about the distinguishing characteristics of vertebrates and
invertebrates.

After going through this module, you are expected to determine the
distinguishing characteristics of animals with backbones (S6MT-IIe-f-3).

Animals that have backbones are called vertebrates. The presence of

backbone, is the common characteristics among vertebrates. The backbone
provides axial support and house the spinal cord. At the end of the spinal
cords is the enlarged brain. Normally, vertebrates are classified into five (5)
smaller groups: mammals, fishes, birds, reptiles and amphibians.

A. Mammals
The term mammals came from the Greek word mamma which means
“breast”.

Characteristics:
✓ The bodies of mammals are partly or completely covered with
hair or fur.
✓ Most mammals develop their young inside their mother’s body
and fully formed when they are born. They feed their young with
their milk form their mammary glands.
✓ Mammals breathe through their lungs.
✓ Most mammals live on land; others live in water.
✓ They use their legs, feet and wings for locomotion.
Examples:

LU_Q2_Science6_Module3
B. Reptiles
Characteristics:
✓ Reptiles are cold – blooded vertebrates.
✓ Reptiles are ectoderm animals. They cannot generate their body
temperature like turtles basking on the rocks on sunny day,
snakes gather together in masses during winter, covering each
other to reduce heat loss.
✓ Reptiles are terrestrial animals. They are fully adapted to life on
land.
✓ Reptiles have dry, scaly skin. Some have scales and others have
shells.
✓ Most reptiles used their feet and legs for locomotion.
✓ Some reptiles are born alive and some are hatched form eggs.

C. Amphibians
The word amphibia means “double lives” which refers to the ability of
the animals to live in both land and water.
Characteristics:
✓ Amphibians are cold-blooded animals. They spend part of their
lives in water and part on land.
✓ Young amphibians breathe through their gills. As they grow,
their gills disappear and lungs take their place.
✓ Amphibians have moist and scale less skin. In hot and dry days,
they may bury themselves in mud to prevent their skin from
drying up.
✓ Amphibians lay eggs in water. Their eggs have no shells.
Instead, their eggs have a jelly like material.

LU_Q2_Science6_Module3
D. Birds
Characteristics:
✓ Birds are warm –blooded animals or endotherms. They can
generate their body heat internally by their own metabolism.
✓ Birds are the only mammals with feathers.
✓ Birds lay eggs with shells. Their young are hatched from eggs.

clipart-library.com clipart-library.com clipart-library.com

E. Fish
Characteristics:
✓ Fish are cold blooded animal or ectoderms. Their temperature
changes when the temperature of the air or water around them
changes.
✓ Fish breathes with their gills. They take in water through their
mouth.
✓ Fish have tails and paired fins on their back and on their bellies
that enable them to swim
✓ Almost all kinds of fish are covered with scales.
✓ Fish lay eggs on water. Their young are hatched from eggs.

Animals that have no backbones are called invertebrates. Normally,

invertebrates are classified into: arthropods, mollusks, poriferans,
echinoderms, cnidarians, platyhelminthes, nematodes, annelids.
A. Arthropods
Characteristics:
✓ Arthropods have segmented bodies and tough skeleton with
jointed appendages.
✓ Arthropods have segmented bodies allowing for efficient and
complex movement. They have three main body regions: a head,
a thorax and the abdomen.
✓ Arthropods have a hard exoskeleton on the outside of the body.
An exoskeleton provides framework for support and protects soft
body tissue.
✓ Arthropods have jointed and paired appendages adapted for
feeding.
✓ Arthropods are classified into (5) five groups: insects, arachnids,
crustaceans, centipedes and millipedes.
1. Insects – are six-legged arthropods.
Examples: ants, butterflies, moth, mosquitoes, fleas, grasshoppers,
termites, bees, beetles

2. Arachnids – have four pairs of walking legs. They have no antennae.

Examples: spiders, scorpions, ticks, and mites

3. Crustaceans – have five pairs of legs for swimming and walking.

Most crustaceans are marine or drift near the ocean bottom.
Examples: lobsters, crabs, shrimp, crayfish

4. Centipedes – Most of these animals have less than a hundred feet.

5. Millipedes – They have cylindrical bodies consisting of about 20 to

more than one hundred segments.

B. Mollusks (Soft-bodied Animals)

Characteristics:
✓ Mollusks are found in aquatic and moist land environment.
✓ Mollusks have a soft body covered with hard outer covering.
Examples: oysters, mussels, clams, squids, octopuses, snails

11

LU_Q2_Science6_Module3
C. Echinoderms ( Spiny-skinned animals)
✓ Echinoderms are marine animals with spiny endoskeletons.
Examples: starfish, sea lily, sea urchin, sand dollars, sea
urchins, starfish

D. Sponges (Pore-bearing Animals)

Characteristics:
✓ Sponges are pore-bearing animals.
✓ They have no tissue, no organ and most have no symmetry.

E. Cnidarian(Stinging-cell Animals)
Characteristics:
✓ They are stinging cell used in paralyzing their prey.
Examples: coral, hydra, jellyfish, sea anemone

F. Platyhelminthes (Flatworms)
Characteristics:
✓ They are thin, flat that can be freely living or paralytic. They
have no digestive system. Most flatworms are parasites living in
the body of variety of animals.
Examples: planaria, tapeworm and fluke

G. Nematodes (Roundworms)
Characteristics:
✓ They have long, smooth, and rounded bodies which often have
rings, bristles, or ridges that aid in locomotion. They are found
in water, soil or in other plants and animals as parasites.
Examples: hookworm, pinworm and ascaris

H. Annelids (Segmented Worms)

Characteristics:
✓ Segmented worms or annelids have body segments that allow
for specialization of tissues for efficient movement.
Examples: earthworms, leeches
