B. Tech. / B. E. First Semester ( FY I - A & II - B ) /

B. Tech. – 20-21 – SOE – FY - 202 Examination

Course Code : GE 2105 Course Name : Engineering Physics

Time : 2 Hours] [ Max. Marks : 40

Instructions to Candidates :—
(1) All questions are compulsory.
(2) All questions carry marks as indicated.
(3) Assume suitable data wherever necessary.
(4) Illustrate your answers wherever necessary with the help of neat sketches.
(5) Use of non – programmable calculator is permitted.
(6) List of Constants :
1. Plank's constant h = 6.625 x 10–34 J.s.
2. Mass of electron me = 9.1 x 10–31 kg.
3. Mass of Proton mp = 1.67 x 10–27 kg.
4. Charge e = 1.602 x 10–19 C.
5. Velocity of light c = 3 x 108 m/s.
6. Boltzmann constant k = 1.38 x 10–23 J/K.
7. Atomic mass unit 1 amu = 1.67 x 10–27 kg.

1. (A) Explain the following :—

(i) Zeroth order fringe in Newton's rings is dark.
(ii) The fringes produced in wedge shaped thin film illuminated by a monochromatic
λ
light are of same thickness interval ——. 4 (CO 1, PO 2)

(B) A diffraction grating used at normal incidence gives a line (5400 Å) in

a certain order superposed on the violet line (4050 Å) of the next higher
order. Estimate the number of lines per cm in the grating if angle of diffraction
is 300. 3 (CO 1, PO 2)

2. (A) State de Broglie's hypothesis of matter waves. A stable atom, according to one
of the Bohr postulates, comprises an electron moving in a stationary orbit with

an orbital angular momentum L being an integral multiple of –h. Obtain this condition
using de Brogelie's hypothesis of matter waves. 4 (CO 2, PO 2)

(B) A particle is trapped in a box of width L. Determine the probability that

a particle can be found between X1 = 0.55 L and X2 = 0.65 L for the first
excited state. 3 (CO 2, PO 2)

3. (A) Sample of extrinsic semiconductor carrying a current of I ampere is subjected

to a sufficiently strong and uniform magnetic flux density B Tesla perpendicular
to the passing current. What is the effect of the magnetic force on the
semiconductor sample ? Applying the condition of equilibrium obtain an expression
for the induced voltage. Illustrate your answer by drawing a well – labelled
diagram. 4 (CO 3, PO 2)

(B) Calculate the fraction of electron in conduction band of Ge (Eg = 0.72 eV)
at 300 K. Hence find the temperature at which Silicon (Eg = 1.14 eV) will
have the same fraction of electrons. 3 (CO 3, PO 2)

4. (A) Show that an electron moving with uniform velocity follows a parabolic path
in transverse uniform electric field. 4 (CO 4, PO 2)

(B) A 2 KeV positron is projected in to uniform magnetic field of 0.1 T with

velocity making an angle of 600 with the magnetic field. Calculate the distance
travelled by positron along the magnetic field after completion of four revolution.
3 (CO 4, PO 2)

5. (A) State the resonance condition in cyclotron. Electrons cannot to be accelerated

to high energy in cyclotron, Explain. 3 (CO 4, PO 2)

(B) ωt and Vy = V2 sin(ω

If the voltages Vx = V1 sinω ωt + θ) are fed to the X
and Y plates of CRO respectively then show that the resultant figure displayed
on the CRO screen is governed by the equation :
2 2
Vx Vy 2Vx Vy
—–2 + —–2 – ——— cos θ = sin2 θ.
V1 V2 V1 V2

From this equation obtain the expression for the phase difference θ and

describe the method to find θ using CRO. Which figure will be observed
on the CRO screen if :

(i) θ = 0,

(ii) θ = 900 and V1 = V2. 3 (CO 5, PO 2)

6. (A) Explain the roll of xenon flash lamp and coolant in Ruby Laser. Why
we get pulsed output in Ruby Laser ? 3 (CO 5, PO 2)

(B) Estimate the relative populations of the two states in a Ruby laser that produces
a light beam of wavelength 6943 Å at 300 K and 500 K.
3 (CO 5, PO 2)
