2.5.2 Measurement Operation

With gate measurement, information such as amplitude, sound path and depth within the

gate may be acquired.

Operation:

In Meas menu, adjust the submenus Start, Width and Thresh of Gate A, B or C to record

the echo, and the measurement results are shown in the data information bar real time.

【Note】: Track: When the gate is set “Track”, the echo of this tracked gate will be

the measurement reference point for the other gate measurement. Only one of the

gates can be set “Track”.

2.5.3 MeasPoint Select

There are 5 methods for gate MeasPoint: Peak, JFlank, Flank, GPeak and GFlank. The

values for Sound Path and Amplitude are different subject to the methods.

1) Peak: To calculate sound path and amplitude based on the peak within the gate

range.

2) JFlank: To calculate sound path from the first intersection with the gate within

the gate range, based on which calculate the amplitude by searching for the

echo peak where the intersection locates.

3) Flank: To calculate sound path from the first intersection with the gate, and to

calculate the amplitude based on the peak within the gate range.

4) GPeak: To calculate sound path and amplitude based on the peak exceeding

the gate thresh within the gate range.

5) GFlank: To calculate sound path from the first intersection with the gate

exceeding the gate thresh within the gate range, and calculate amplitude

based on the peak.

Take Fig. 2-4 for example:

 If Peak is selected for MeasPoint, Sound Path is S3, and Amplitude is H2.

 If JFlank is selected, Sound Path is S1, and Amplitude is H1.

 If Flank is selected, Sound Path is S1, and Amplitude is H2.

amplitude to about 80%. Press Record to record the echo. Now the curves are

created automatically.

Fig. 2-32 AVG Curve

【Note】: If the echo amplitude of the reference test block or the workpiece

does not comply with the theoretical value, Sur_Comp (Surface Compensation)

is used to compensate the difference, which is commonly used in case that BW

echo serves as the reference. Since BW echo amplitude usually cannot reach
2-42
Ultrasonic Testing(UT)

the theoretical difference with the BW hole echo amplitude of the same

distance, taking the BW amplitude as the reference will result in incorrect BW

whole equivalent calculated in practical testing.

4.4 Scan Method

4.4.1 Linear Scan

Definition

Linear scan, also called electronic scan or E scan, is a scanning method with a fixed

number of elements scanning along the probe arrangement direction in the same focus

rule until the whole probe scanning is finished. That is to add a select window with a fixed

size on the phased-array probe, and the elements in that window are T/R elements. When

transmitting/receiving of elements in the window is finished, shift the window at a fixed

interval to select the T/R elements for the next transmission/ reception without changing

the focus rule, and it works in the same way till the whole probe selection is completed,

which is similar to manual straight-line scanning with a conventional probe. The scanning

principle is shown in Fig. 4-1 Linear Scan Diagram, and the image display as in Fig. 4-2.

4.4.2.1 Definition

Sector scan, also called S scan, is a scanning method with a fixed number of elements

scanning a certain angle range by changing the focus rule.

That is to add a select window with a fixed size on the phased-array probe. The elements

in that window are T/R elements. When transmitting/receiving of elements in the window

is finished, change the focus rule without moving the window, perform the next

transmission/ reception, and it works in the same way until the whole scanning is

completed. The scanning principle is shown in Fig. 4-3, and the image display as in Fig.

4-4.
