Title PSYCHOLOGICAL FIRST AID (PFA) TRAINING

Date/Venue

Rationale The Republic Act 11036, also known as the Mental Heath Act,
mandates the Department of Health (DOH), among other things, to
establish a balanced system of community-based and hospital-based
mental health services at all levels of the public health care system
from the barangay, municipal, city, provincial, regional to the national
level.

The frequency of disasters in the Bicol Region, as evidenced

by the battery of typhoons that severely affected several provinces
proves that there is a necessity for health care workers at the local level
to have competencies in emergency settings, one of which is
Psychological First Aid (PFA). This is an incredibly important skill for
healthcare workers to be able to provide basic psychosocial support
immediately after a traumatic life event.

This activity is designed to train as many service providers to

offer PFA to people following a serious crisis event. PFA involves
humane, supportive and practical assistance for people who are
distressed, in ways that respect their dignity, culture and abilities.

The activities, can be used to deliver a full-day orientation for

a deeper learning to which both the facilitators and helpers can provide
efficient styles, and relevant experiences and ideas as a helper in order
to offer help among clients in crisis.
Objectives of the Course This activity aims to capacitate health workers from the local health
facilities to conduct Psychological First Aid in order to:
1. Identify the different approaches in conducting Psychosocial
Support and Care.
2. Describe the process in understanding Psychological First Aid
Learning Outcomes At the end of the training, the participants are able to:
1. Define what is mental health and health problems through
learned concepts, rights, and laws on mental health.
2. Determine the risk and protective factors in Mental Health
3. Perform the different approaches in conducting Psychosocial
Support and Care.
