Voltage Factor (C factor)

• IEC 60909 utilizes a method for short circuit calculation that involves the introduction of an equivalent voltage
source at the location of the short circuit. This equivalent voltage source represents the only active voltage in
the system during the short circuit.
• The "C factor" is defined as the ratio between the equivalent voltage source introduced at the location of a short
circuit and the nominal system voltage (Un), divided by √3.
• All network feeders, synchronous, and asynchronous machines are replaced by their internal impedances for
calculation purposes.
• For the below mentioned SLD, Short-circuit current at the location F can be determined with the help of an
equivalent voltage source.
• Operational data, consumer loads, transformer tap-changer positions, generator excitations, etc., are
dispensable for this calculation.
