Every country has a capital city. It is where the


government of the country meets. The capital city is
usually the largest and most important city of the
country.

• How did Canberra become the capital city of


Australia?

In the 19th century, Sydney and Melbourne were the


two largest cities in Australia. The people could not

decide which should be the capital city. So they built
a new city, called Canberra. Canberra is inland, about
halfway between Sydney and Melbourne.
