I.2.1.1 Information to the user

I.2.2 Safety Information

I.2.2.1 Radiation Safety

X-ray equipment generates ionizing radiation, which is potentially hazardous to the patient and personnel. If not
properly used, x-ray equipment may be dangerous. Due to the potentially adverse effects of ionizing radiation,
the following recommendations should be read and understood before attempting to operate this x-ray
equipment.

I.2.2.2 Manufacturers safety

The x-ray equipment was designed to comply with the recommendations of the United States Center for
devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) as specified in the Code of Federal Regulations Title 21, the Standards
for Medical Devices of the International Electro technical Commission IEC 60601 and Council Directive
93/42/EEC of the European Commission.
Although this equipment incorporates protection against x-radiation other than the useful beam, practical design
does not provide complete protection. Equipment design does not compel the operation or assistants to take
the necessary precautions, nor does it prevent the possibility of improper use.

I.2.2.3 Operator's Safety

Only authorized and properly trained individuals should operate this equipment. All individuals authorized to use
this equipment must be aware of the danger of excessive exposure to radiation. In addition, it is important that
all authorized personnel be familiar with regulatory standards in their country.
One of the recommendations of the guidelines is that doses be kept As Low As Reasonably Achievable
(ALARA). Patient dose should be kept as low as possible without compromising the quality of the procedure.
Authorized operators should avoid exposure to the primary beam at all times. Any object in the path of the
primary beam produces secondary or scattered radiation. Protective measures should be taken to safeguard
against secondary radiation.

I.2.3 Compliance

1.5 X-ray generator power supply connections for a 380/400V and 208 mains supply
The space designated for the installation of the X-ray Generator OPTIX HF must be prepared. This must include
building changes for laying the electrical connections to a central distribution cabinet.
The relevant regulations are to be observed at all times.
In the following text, reference is made to Figure 1-1.

1.5.1 Power supply cable

The power supply cable is to be connected between the main power distribution box for the building and the
power distribution cabinet in the X-ray room for supplying 3 phase power to the X-ray generator and the
examination units.
3 phases, L1, L2, L3, neutral conductor N and the earthed conductor PE are required.

1.5.2 Generator fusing (F1)

See Figure 1-1
Building installation, mounted in the distribution box for the X-ray room.
The fuses are small compared to the operating current and operating power. This can be contrary to cross-
sectional diameter of the power cables, that are chosen for the required power supply resistance. It must be
considered that the X-ray generator only takes this high current for a short period of time. As opposed to the
Electrical Supply Company the calculations are carried out however, after the installed rating but where the
continuous rating is laid down.

1.5.3 Control fuse (F2)

See Figure 1-1
Building installation, mounted in the distribution box for the X-ray room.
The auxiliary circuit for controlling the main contactor is to be protected by a 10 A fuse or circuit breaker.

1.5.4 Installation switch / Emergency OFF switch (S0)

See Figure 1-1
Building installation, connected to the distribution box for the X-ray room.
Note: The switch is to be mounted in the vicinity of the generator control console

page 1-8
1.5.5 Main contactor (K1)
See Figure 1-1
Building installation, mounted in the distribution box for the X-ray room.
A 63 A contactor with an auxiliary contact and a 230 V AC coil is recommended for the OPTIX HF.

1.5.6 Current-operated earth-leakage circuit-breaker (F3)

See Figure 1-1
Building installation, mounted in the distribution box for the X-ray room.
An AC / DC ELCB (Earth-Leakage Circuit Breaker) with a leakage current of 30 mA is recommended for the
OPTIX HF.

See Figure 1-1
Building installation, mounted in the distribution box for the X-ray room.

1.5.8 Main safety earth bar (PE)

See Figure 1-1
Building installation, mounted in the distribution box for the X-ray room.

1.5.9 Transfer terminal block (X1)

See Figure 1-1
The power cable from the distribution box to the X-ray generator should not exceed 32 mm² because of the
input terminals inside the rear panel of the generator. It does not have to be a flexible cable because the rear
panel of the generator is screwed to the building wall.
The rear panel, that is screwed to the wall, is 160 mm shorter than the accompanying standard cabinet so that
there is 40 mm between the wall and the cabinet, allowing a cable trucking with a cross-section of 130 x 40
mm to be laid along the skirting board or at the cabinet height, that can carry the cables.
In this way, all incoming cables are to be fixed to the rear panel. Control cables are to be fixed using
intermediate terminals or adapters that are fixed to rails on the rear panel.

3.1.3 Calibrating the filament current

3.1.3.1 General information

The calibration is described on the basis of the 200mA tube current Code number 927.

Figure 3-1shows the measurement when the stored parameters for the heating current are to high. The curve
over swings before it is regulated to the reference value. Here also regulation time is about 30 ms. The
measured mAs-product it to high and the generator calculate a new filament heat current for the next exposure.

927: tube1, focus 2 mA(0-9999) :4560

A 70kV 200mA 100ms 22.7mAs

Figure 3-1 Filament current too high

Service Manual X-Ray Generator OPTIX.SERVICE.MANUAL.DO

OPTIX 40/50/65 HF C
page 3-9
Figure 3-2 shows the situation when the stored value of the parameter for the heating current is underestimated.
In the example the time deviation is 10 ms per unit. As you can see the time for regulating the tube current to
the reference value runs up to about 30 ms.

927: tube1, focus 2 mA(0-9999) :4502

A 70kV 200mA 100ms 17.9mAs

Figure 3-2 Filament current too low

Service Manual X-Ray Generator OPTIX.SERVICE.MANUAL.DO

OPTIX 40/50/65 HF C
page 3-10
In Figure 3-3 voltage and tube current are plotted when stored heating current parameters are correct. In this
case regulation time is less than 10 ms. In this case the adjustment of the tube is correct.

927: tube1, focus 2 mA(0-9999) :4531

A 70kV 200mA 100ms 20.1 mAs

Figure 3-3 Filament current ok

These curves point out that it is essential to adjust the tube current correctly each time at installation or if a
new tube is installed.
