Lesson Elements and Principles of Arts
1 and Craft of MIMAROPA and the
Visayas group of Islands

MIMAROPA, also known as Region IV-B, is one of the many regions of the
Philippines located in Luzon. The name is an acronym that stands for the provinces,
comprising the region, namely: Mindoro - Occidental Mindoro and Oriental Mindoro,
Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan.

MINDORO
There are seven (7) native groups living in Mindoro. Collectively they call
themselves Mangyans. Groups that are different from each other were based on their
language, customs, and ways of living.

Hanunuo - Mangyan which means "true/real/ genuine" Mangyan

Mangyans display their rich,
artistic heritage. One of their art forms is the
ambahan, a rhythmic, poetic expression
with a meter of seven syllables. Presented
through recitation and chanting without a
determined musical pitch or
accompaniment. A variation of this is the
urukay, which uses eight syllables instead
of seven, frequently written on bamboo
tubes or slats

lraya - Mangyans of Mindoro are fond of


making baskets with intricate patterns and
designs of humans, animals, trees, and
other objects. It is made of dried nito grass
and forest vines, meticulously and patiently
woven to create these unique baskets.

Marinduqueños are also known for their weaving skills that have been passed on
through the years because of the abundance of the buli (buri palm) and raffia that
grow in their areas, these leaves become staple materials in the weaving.

PALAWAN

Palawan has its own writing system that they use to communicate with each
other. They are rich in cultural and natural diversity. It is said that the first
inhabitants of Palawan are the Tagbanuas.

One of the most important ancient
artifacts from the Philippines is the
Manunggul jar (890- 710 BCE). It was
excavated in the early 1960's inside the
Manunggul Cave; Lipuun Point Palawan. The
vessel is a secondary burial jar that served as
a container for the exhumed remains of the
deceased, The upper portion of the jar, as well
as the cover, is incised with curvilinear scroII
designs and painted with natural iron or
hematite. On top of the jar cover is a boat with
two human figures representing two souls on

VISAYAS
Panay Islands – It is the largest island in the archipelago composed of the
provinces of Antique, Aklan, Ilo-ilo, Capiz, and the Island of Guimaras and was
tagged as the “Textile capital of the Philippines”. Because weaving was the primary
arts and crafts of the Panay Islands even before Spaniards came.

Materials:

● Oil pastel or crayons
● Pencil or empty pen
● Yarn or ribbon

Procedures:
1. Look for an Ambahan script that you want to etch on your bookmark.
2. Cut a 2 x 5 inches size of cardboard.

3. Using oil pastel or crayons, color the entire cardboard with your desire
colors.

4. After, apply another layer using black oil pastel or crayon over the colored
area.

5. Using a pencil or an empty ballpen, start etching the Ambahan script on the
colored cardboard.

6. Punch or put a hole on top of the cardboard and tie yarn or ribbon.

MIMAROPA Arts and Crafts
3.1

MINDORO

Hanunuo Mangyans, which means “truly/real/genuine,” live in the Southern part


of Mindoro, while Iraya Mangyans are from Occidental Mindoro. These groups are
distinguished from each other based on their language, customs, and their way of
living.

Ambahan is a rhythmic
poetics expression with a
meter of seven syllables. It
is performed to express in
a symbolic way a situation
or certain characteristics
to the one reciting the
poem.

Iraya Basket is made of dried


nito grass and forest vines, which
are meticulously and patiently
woven to create these unique
baskets.

MARINDUQUE

The Moriones Festival in Marinduque


is a much-awaited Lenten tradition,
which is celebrated every Holy week.
Morion refers to the masks that are
made of wood or papier Mache,
adorned with colourful shells, animal
hairs, tassels and crepe papers.

Buri (buli palm) and raffia weaving


also became staple materials in the
crafts of Marinduque because of their
abundance. This weaving tradition
has been passed on from generation to
generation.

ROMBLON

Romblon is known for its


fine marble products. They
also produce beautifully
woven mats and bags made
from Romblon plants.

PALAWAN
Palawan is known as the country’s last
frontier because it is rich in cultural and
natural diversity. The Tagbanuas are the
first inhabitants with each other and write
their own history.

Tingkop is a cone-shaped colander harvest


basket made of blackened and natural
bamboo. It displays their craftsmanship in
weaving.

The Manunggul Jar dates to 8th Century


B.C. and was excavated in the early 1960’s
indeed the Manunggul Cave at Lipuun Point,
Palawan. A container for secondary burial of
the deceased.

VISAYAS

Panay Island Arts and Craft


Hablon weaving is a primary form of
arts and crafts in the island. Weaving
from indigenous textiles such as jusi and
piña became popular in the latter part of
the 19 century despite the introduction

of cheap cotton cloth from the west that


dominated the local textile industry.

Patadyong is a wrap-around piece of
cloth worn by women, a skirt paired with
a kimono. Can be used as shade from the
sun or rain.

Used as a tapis when bathing outdoors or


washing clothes in the river, or as a
carriage for babies.
Characterized by its linear and geometric
designs of different colours.
The traditional materials used for
patadyong weaving are cotton and
abaca. They started using polyester in
the 1980’s

Piña weaving is an age-old tradition in


Aklan, the leading manufacturer of piña
cloth in the country.
It requires long hours of laborious
extraction of fibers from pineapple leaves
using different methods and different
techniques before getting the fine fibers
to be woven.

Aklan Weaving
The people of Aklan weave baskets,
trays and mats. Pandan and bariw
plants are the materials they use in
their weaving. The process of
pagrara or weaving is often a form of
social interaction in the community.

The Capiz is an important material in
the craft of Panay Island, particularly
in Aklan and Iloilo. The Capiz shells
are bleached and dried before they
are passed or cut into different
shapes. These are formed into
various craft products like plates,
utility boxes, chandeliers, windows,
etc.

Negros Island

The Negros Island was first called Buglas, named after the type of grass similar to
sugarcane that grows abundantly on the island. The weaving tradition of the
Negrenses includes the production of roofing materials, walls, hats, and baskets. The
materials commonly used are pandan and buri leaves.

BOHOL

Basket weaving in Antequera

Basket weaving is among the earliest


industries that have been established
in Bohol, particularly in the town of
Antequera.

Antequera is known as the “Basket


Capital of Bohol.” The materials used
for basket weaving in Antequera are
fibers that can be found in their
surroundings: from bamboo, rattan,
wicker, nito, buri, sig-id, and other
vines.

Basey, Samar

Known for its woven products such as mats, wall decorations, and the famous
colorful sleeping mat called “banig”
Mat Weaving
A typical banig usually measures around
2X3 meters and are as thin as a sheet of
chipboard. Made of tikog, a reed grass
which grows in swampy areas along rice
fields and has solid, joint-less and
usually triangular stems.

Colorful banigs are more expensive than


simple ones. Innovations have been
made from the known sleeping mat into
bags, decors, place mats, furniture
matting and other adornment.

Festival in the Visayas

1. Ati-atihan Festivals
The Ati-atihan Festival is
regarded as one of the most
colourful and most fun festivals in
the Philippines. It is held in
Kalibo, Aklan. Ati-atihan means
“make believe Ati,” the indigenous
natives of the island. It is held
every third Sunday of January in
honor of the arrival of the Santo
Niño as a gift from Ferdinand
Magellan to the queen of
Cebu. The participants paint
their faces in different ways and
dress in impressive costumes.

2. Masskara Festival in Bacolod
The Masskara Festival in Bacolod is
considered as the most spectacular
display of colors, beauty, and
culture of the Negrenses. Masskara
comes from two words, “mass”
meaning crowd and “cara” which
means face. The smiling masks
have become the city’s symbol,
which earned them the moniker,
“City of Smiles”.

3. Kasadyaan Festival in Tacloban


City

The Kasadyaan is a cultural-


religious celebration to honor the
feast day of the Santo Niño. This
festival features the unique culture
and colourful history of the Province
of Leyte. They reenact their Pre-
Spanish history, epics, and folk
religion through street dancing. The
highlight of the event is the pintado
dance presentation.

Architecture

As the Spaniards first set foot in the islands of Visayas, they introduced the
Roman Catholic religion. They also built churches that helped in the propagation
of their faith and gaining the trust of the people.

Molo Church
The Molo Church in Iloilo depicts
the fusion of Gothic and
Renaissance styles. The spires of
the two towers of the church, and
the interior elements, such as the
altar and the pulpits, show the
gothic characteristics of the
church. This church is regarded
as a “Women’s Church” because
of the 16 women saints inside
and its patron saint St. Ann. The
church was constructed with
white coral rocks.

Miag-ao Church
The Miag-ao Church in Iloilo is
an example of a Baroque-
Romanesque architecture that
shows through its massive
quality, thick walls, round

for its artistic sculptural relief
carved in the façade of the
church that illustrates the way

Ruins
The Ruins, found in Talisay, Negros
Occidental, is an example of neoclassical
architecture. It was built by a wealthy
haciendero for his Portuguese wife in the
early 1900’s. It was destroyed by fire
during World War II, leaving behind the
concrete structure that stands to this
day. The colors of the ruins change from
white to gray and orange to red as the
sunset touches the structure.
