Clever Roads: An Arduino-based sensor Intelligent Traffic

Tracking Application

Den Peter F. Basut

Summary

As problems due to traffic congestions arise in the globe, they have

caused a significant toll in our environment, the people, our economy, and

especially our community. The need for new pathways and subway station

become inevitable to reduce traffic jams. This research proposal helps

solve the problem of traffic with the help of Clever Roads an app that can

be used as an alternative guiding system to guide drivers in which road to

use to avoid creating obstacles and avoid traffic jams to solve the problem

of traffic congestion that can be found in large cities around the world.

Background and Problem

Traffic is the top concern of daily urban life among Filipinos. This is

particularly true in the country’s capital, Metro Manila. With traffic

congestion being one of the most pertinent problems in Metro Manila and

in other major cities in the country (Gatarin, G.R. 2023). It might still be a

mystery for some what really causes the hours-long traffic jams. From

overpopulation to unreliable public transportation, there are numerous

reasons why traffic is just a worsening problem even with numerous

proposed solutions.
There have been many plans over the past 40 to 50 years for Metro

Manila’s urban transport system, mainly through studies initiated by

international development institutions (Regidor and Aloc 2017 ; Napalang

and Regidor 2015; Rimmer 1986). Timely accurate traffic forecast is

crucial for urban traffic control and guidance. Due to the high nonlinearity

and complexity of traffic flow, traditional methods cannot satisfy the

requirements of mid-and-long term prediction tasks and often neglect

spatial and temporal dependencies (Yu, B., Yin, H., & Zhu, Z. 2017).

In this paper, the researchers innovated a solution for this problem

called Smart Ways, a vehicle tracking system with the infusion of

innovative technologies and a user-friendly approach, this becomes the

solution to the problem of traffic congestion.

Beneficiaries

1.People: Their time wasted on traffic congestions will be gone,

causing in less money spent unnecessary things during traffic congestions

like water, food, and fares.

2.Environment: Since traffic will dissipate it will cause in lesser

emissions of greenhouse gasses caused by vehicles, thus helping our

environment greatly by minimizing the toll of air pollution.

3.Economy: Due to the disappearance of traffic the economy will be

financially stable, due to the lesser spending of the people in traffic

congestions.
4. Goverment: They will now be able to use their funds on other

things rather than use it in creating new roads for mitigating the effects of

traffics, enabling them to use their funds wisely.

Proposed Solution to the Problem Presented

Traffic congestion in the Philippines remains a persistent issue,

leading to lost productivity, environmental pollution, and daily frustration

for millions of people around the country and the world. To address this

problem, The researchers created Clever Roads, an innovative system

that combines advanced traffic monitoring technology with the use of a

user-friendly mobile app that uses an Arduino-based infrared sensors (IR

Proximity Sensor) that are to be installed on posts, traffic lights, and street

lights. Using infrared proximity sensors (IR Proximity Sensors), the system

tracks real-time traffic flow and vehicle density on major roads, providing

accurate and up-to-date information by sending its observations through

signals in real time.

This data is then transmitted to the mobile app (Clever Roads),

which guides drivers toward alternative, less compact or congested routes

and offers actionable ways to avoid potential obstacles, traffic and road

delays. The app also promotes responsible driving habits by advising

users on best practices and behaviors to minimize traffic disruptions.

Designed for seamless integration with existing road networks, the

system also enables collaboration with traffic management authorities,

supporting better road planning and policies. By offering real-time

solutions and fostering better driving behavior, Clever Roads aims to

reduce travel delays, alleviate congestion, and enhance the overall

commuting experience in the country.

The cost analysis of this research proposal about traffic congestion

are, for the infrared sensors (IR Proximity Sensor) it costs ₱25.00, on the

other hand manual labor for installation is ₱10.00, while our app costs
₱10,000.00 for programming its basic function of guiding vehicles and

teaching good habits to the drivers. Bringing its total cost to ₱35 for

installing the IR Proximity Sensor while only costing Php 10,000.00 for the

app that will receive the signal and observations of the sensors.

Overall, this product is designed to ultimately lead drivers away

from busy roads to help the avoid traffic, which lessens their time spent

on traffics, thus preventing not needed traffic congestions this apps also

helps the driver by teaching the driver on what to do to avoid disruptions

in on the road.
