(ELECTRICAL MACHINES)

BASIC ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING

(BEE 101/201)
ELECTRICAL & ELECTRONICS ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT
Three Phase Induction Motor:

1. A 3 – Ф, 4 – pole, 50 Hz induction motor runs at 1460 RPM. Determine its percentage

slip.
2. In a three phase, 4 pole slip ring induction motor the rotor frequency is found to be 2 Hz
while connected to a 400 V, 50 Hz supply. Determine motor speed in RPM.
3. A 3 – Ф, 4 – pole, 50 Hz induction motor is supplied by 3 – Ф AC source. Find:
a. Synchronous Speed
b. Rotor speed when slip is 4 %
c. Rotor frequency when rotor runs at 600 RPM
4. A 3 – Ф, 440 V, 50 Hz induction motor runs at 1400 RPM. When it delivers rated output
power then determine:
a. Number of poles in machine
b. Speed of rotating air gap field
c. Rotor induced voltage with stator to rotor turn ratio of 1:0.8
d. Frequency of rotor current
5. A 3 – Ф delta connected 440 V, 50 Hz, 4 – pole induction motor has rotor standstill EMF
per phase of 130 V. If the motor is running at 1440 RPM then find:
a. Slip
b. Frequency of rotor EMF
c. Rotor EMF per phase
6. The power input to the rotor of a 400 V, 50 Hz, 3 – Ф, 6 – pole induction motor is 50 kW.
The rotor EMF makes 120 cycles per minute. Friction and windage losses are 2 kW.
Calculate:
a. Slip
b. Rotor Speed

7. A 3 – Ф, 4 – pole, induction motor is energized from 60 Hz AC supply and is running at a

load condition for which slip is 0.03. Determine:
a. Rotor speed in RPM
b. Rotor current frequency in Hz

DC Machines:
8. The armature of a DC separately excited machine has a resistance of 0.1 Ω and is
connected to a 230 V DC supply. Calculate the generated EMF when it is running:
a. As a generator supplying 80 A
b. As a motor taking 60 A
9. A DC shunt generator running at 1200 RPM supplies a load of 60 kW at 250 V. Find the
speed at which it runs as a shunt motor while taking 60 kW from 250 V DC source. Take
armature resistance as 0.1 Ω and field winding resistance as 50 Ω. Neglect brush drop.
10. A 4 pole DC shunt generator with wave wound armature has 40 slots each having 12
conductors. Armature resistance is 1 Ω and shunt field resistance is 200 Ω. The flux per
pole is 25 mWb. If a load of 50 Ω is connected across armature terminals and armature
current is 50 A then find voltage across load when generator is driven at 1000 RPM. What
will be the load voltage if the armature is lap wounded?
11. A 20 kW, 200 V shunt generator has an armature resistance of 0.05 Ω and shunt field
resistance of 200 Ω. Calculate the power developed in the armature when it delivers rated
output power.
12. A DC shunt motor runs at 600 RPM taking 60 A from 230 V DC supply. Armature
resistance is 0.2 Ω and filed resistance is 115 Ω. Find the speed when current through the
armature is 30 A.
