TRAVELING WAVE TUTORIAL QUESTIONS

1. Two long transmission lines each having a surge impedances of 400 are interconnected by
the cable having surge impedance of 50. If a short pulse of magnitude 10kV travels along
the first line towards the junction. Determine from the first principles the magnitude of the
first and second pulse entering the second line.

Let the two lines OA and BC be joined by the cable AB. the surge impedance of OA and
BC are 400 , 50 and 400 respectively.
i. Transmission coefficient for voltage at junction A

ii. Reflected coefficient for voltage at Junction A

z 2−z 1 50−400 −350 −7
ρ 1= = = =
z 2 + z 1 50+ 400 450 9
iii. Transmission coefficient at Junction B
2 × z 3 2× 400 800 16
τ 2= = = =
z 3 + z 2 400+50 450 9
iv. Reflected coefficient for voltage at Junction B
z 3−z 2 400−50 7
ρ 2= = =
z 3 + z 2 400+50 9
At junction A the incident wave is partially reflected in the
transmission line OA and partially transmitted to in the cable AB.

2. An overhead transmission line of surge impedance of 500 terminates in a transformer of

surge impedance of 3500. Find the amplitude of the current and voltage surge transmitted
to the transformer due to incident voltage of 30kV.
3. A cable having inductance of 0.3mH/km and capacitance of 0.4F/km is connected in series
with a transmission line having an inductance of 1.5mH/km and capacitance of 0.012F/km.
a surge peak value of 50kV originates in the line and progress towards the cable. find voltage
transmitted into cable
4. a transmission line has capacitance of 0.012F/km and an inductance of 1.8mH/km. this
overhead line is continued by the underground cable with capacitance of 0.45F/km and
inductance of 0.3mH/km. calculate the maximum voltage occurring at the junction of the line
and cable when a 20kV surge travel along the cable towards the overhead line
5. A cable with the characteristic impedance of 80is joined in series with an open wire line
having characteristic impedance of 700 . If, as consequence of connecting direct voltage to
the cable, a steep –fronted voltage wave of 1.2 kV travel along it. Determine the voltage and
current in the cable and open wire line immediately after the travelling wave has reached the
junction. Assume the line to be loss free.
6. A surge of 20kV magnitude travel along a cable towards its junction with overhead line. The
inductance and capacitance of the cable are0.8mHand 1.0F and of the overhead line, 0.6mH
and 0.05F respectively. Calculate the voltage rise at the junction due to the surge.
7. Rectangular waves of 200kV amplitude travels along the line having a surge impedance of
500 to a transition point where it is connected with a line of 50 surge impedance.
determine the value of the transmitted and reflected voltage and current
