DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING

SUB: Electrical Machine II
BRANCH: B. Tech in EE (Section B) Semester: 4th

Assignment 01
1. What are the advantages of having stationary armature and rotating field system in
alternators?
2. Discuss the construction and principle of operation of a three phase synchronous
generator.
3. Define synchronous speed. Derive the relationship between speed and frequency of
a synchronous machine.
4. An 8-pole synchronous generator is running at 750 rpm. What is the frequency? At
what speed must the generator be run so that frequency shall be 25 Hz?
5. Define pitch factor, distribution factor and winding factors. How these are
calculated?
6. What are the advantages of fractional pitch winding?
7. A 60 Hz synchronous machine has 108 slots, with 4 conductors per slot, and has a
distributed winding with a coil pitch of 16 slots. Calculate the distribution factor, pitch
factor and winding factor for the machine.
8. Derive the e.m.f. equation of a synchronous generator.
9. A 3-phase, 8-pole, 750 rpm star-connected alternator has 72 slots on the armature.
Each slot has 12 conductors and winding is short chorded by 2 slots. Find the
induced emf between lines, given the flux per pole is 0.06 Wb.
10. A 3-phase, 8-pole, 60 Hz, star connected, salient pole synchronous generator has
96 slots, with 4 conductors per slot connected in series in each phase. The coil pitch
is 10 slots. If the maximum value of the air gap flux is 60 mWb and the flux density
distribution in the air gap is sinusoidal, determine (a) the rms phase voltage and (b)
the rms line voltage. (c) If each phase is capable of carrying 650A in current, what is
the kVA rating of the machine?
11. A 3-phase, 60 Hz, 2-pole star connected, armature winding of a generator has 6
slots per pole per phase. The pitch is 10 slots and the coil pitch is 9 slots. The
winding is double layer and has 30 turns per phase. If the airgap flux is sinusoidal
distributed, what must be its maximum value to give 600V across the lines?
12. Explain in details with suitable diagram armature reaction in synchronous generator.
13. What are the causes of changes in terminal voltage in Alternators when loaded?
14. What are the various methods to find voltage regulation of a synchronous
generator?
15. Define short circuit ratio (SCR) of alternators. What is its significance?
16. Explain the EMF, MMF and ZPF methods of finding voltage regulation of
synchronous generator.
17. Explain Blondel’s two reaction theorem. Also draw and explain the phasor diagram
of a salient pole synchronous generator on lagging/leading and UPF load.
18. Explain slip test of a salient pole synchronous generator.
19. Explain the power angle characteristics of cylindrical and salient pole synchronous
generator.
20. The table gives data for open-circuit and load zero power factor test on a 6-pole,
440V, 50Hz, 3- phase star-connected alternator. The effective ohmic resistance
between any two terminals of the armature is 0.3Ω.

i. Synchronous impedance method
ii. MMF method
iii. Potier-triangle method
