Tutorial 2

The document is a tutorial sheet for a complex analysis course, containing various problems related to limits, continuity, power series, and differentiability in the context of complex functions. It includes questions about the behavior of functions as z approaches certain values, the radius of convergence for power series, and the application of the Cauchy-Riemann equations. The problems aim to deepen understanding of complex analysis concepts and their applications.

MTL506 - Complex Analysis

Tutorial Sheet - 2

1. Let z ∈ C such that |z| < 1. What is limn→∞ z n ? If |z| > 1, does limn→∞ z n exists?
Give an argument for both the cases.
z n −1
2. For |z| =
̸ 1, show that the following limit exists: f (z) = limn→∞ z n +1 . Is it possible to
define f (z) for |z| = 1 in such a way to make it continuous?

3. Let z = reiθ , w = Reiϕ , 0 ≤ r < R. For a fixed w find : limr→R Re( w+z
w−z ).

4. Check if the following functions can be prescribed a value at z = 0, so that they become

z+1
, f (z) = zz .

9. Let f (z) =

Examine whether f : C → C is differentiable at 0.

10. Show that the following functions are nowhere differentiable: (a) f (z) = xy + iy
(b) f (z) = ey eix (c) f (z) = ex e−iy .

11. Let f (x, y) = u(x, y) +iv(x, y), where (a) u(x, y) = |xy| and v(x, y) = 0, (b) u(x, y) =

and v(x, y) = xx2 +y+y 2
. Show that the Cauchy-Riemann equations are satisfied at
z = 0, but the function f is not differentiable at that point.

12. (Real and Complex differentiability are different) Verify the Cauchy-Riemann
equations for the function z → z 2 and conclude that it is differentiable everywhere in
C. Now for the function z → |z|2 show that it is only differentiable at 0. Compare this
to the differentiablity of the function x → x2 = |x|2 in R and observe the different
conclusions.
