CABONNE VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH: A DRIVING F ORCE BEHIND M EALS ON W HEELS A Canowindra woman who has spent most of her life serving her local community has been named Cabonne Councils Volunteer of the Month. Margaret Richardson has been involved in many organisations, but it has been her involvement with the Canowindra Meals of Wheels committee that is very close to her heart. A stalwart of the organisation, Mrs Richardson has served on the Meals on Wheels committee for more than 43 years. Although she has retired from several other community activities, Margaret retains her passion for Meals on Wheels and represents the Canowindra community on Cabonne Councils Home and Community Care joint committee. Cabonne Mayor Bob Dowling said Mrs Richardson had touched the hearts of many people in Canowindra through her voluntary work. Your devotion to Meals on Wheels is extraordinary and you should be very proud, Cr Dowling said. Mrs Richardson was involved in fundraising and supporting Canowindra Public School through the mothers club when her children first attended school. As they progressed through school, the need for a separate high school at Canowindra became apparent and Mrs Richardson was a leader in the successful campaign to establish Canowindra High School. Margaret has also been a very active member of the Canowindra Garden Club and Canowindra Beautification Committee, being heavily involved in the rose garden in Morris Park. Margaret spent many hours helping to establish the rose garden, hand watering several times a week in times of drought, Cr Dowling said. Mrs Richardson has also been involved with the Canowindra RSL Auxiliary, which has greatly contributed to the success of many community functions. The things Margaret has achieved for Canowindra have not been easy and she has demonstrated a capacity to keep going in the face of challenges that would have beaten others, the Mayor said. This characteristic has inspired others and resulted in substantial benefits for the Canowindra community.

There will be an increase in mosquito numbers and activity throughout the day. Wear long sleeved shirts & long pants, & spray the clothes lightly with repellent. Mozzies spread some pretty serious diseases so be careful. Snakes: other unwelcome visitors lately have been snakes. As habitat has been displaced by the floods, there will be more wildlife moving around trying to find shelter. Be careful when moving wood & other materials, check to make sure that snakes and spiders haven't taken refuge underneath. Also, be cautious on the roads during early morning and late evening for kangaroos, wallabies and other larger wildlife. It will take a while for things to settle down and resident wildlife to find new homes. Visit: John Cobb MP was in town today Tuesday 6 March travelling around Calare to inspect the flood damage and talk with locals about community issues. Flood: Saturday was the first day in 29 years that Chris Williams Rural Supplies was closed on a normal trading day due to the John Grant Bridge being closed. Showgirls: a big thank you to Cheryl Wythes for her contribution to the organisation of the Canowindra Showgirls over the last 10 years. 2011 was the conclusion of Cheryl's involvement with the competition, and the Zone 6 Finals was her last event, helping her daughter Claudia, who won the RAS Showgirl sash at the 2002 Royal Easter Show.

A free barbecue to mark the completion of Canowindra Pools refurbished amenities block has been rescheduled to this Saturday 10 March 2012. Cabonne Council originally planned to stage the free sausage sizzle last Saturday, but was forced to postpone the event after heavy rain, flooding and road closures around Canowindra. Canowindra Councillors Anthony Durkin and Kevin Walker will host the sausage sizzle from 4pm and are inviting everyone in Canowindra to come along and inspect the $350,000 amenities block improvements. And to encourage as many people as possible to attend, non-season ticket holders will be given free entry to the pool after 3.30pm. The upgrade has given us a fantastic facility and we would like everyone to come along and have a look, Cr Durkin said. The free sausage sizzle is also Councils way of thanking the people of Canowindra for being so patient because the building work was undertaken during the swimming season. Cr Walker said the Council installed temporary changeroom facilities at the pool while the work was being carried out so it did not have to wait until the end of the swimming season to start the project. We wanted pool users to have the benefit of the new amenities as soon as possible, he said. The old amenities block was gutted and the walls were concrete rendered while the floors were resurfaced in stencilled concrete and a roof erected over the building. One of the real benefits of the upgrade is the inclusion of a disabled toilet and changeroom in the new design. This area will have a dual use as a family room and baby change area. Anyone attending the free sausage sizzle will be able to purchase drinks, lollies and chips from the pool kiosk.

There is only space for 60 advertisements without increasing the page numbers and the cost per advertisement is $65. The initial print run is for 10,000. APPEAL TO RESTRICT W ATER USE Over the past week, Central Tablelands Water has suffered major damage to its trunk mains due to flooding creeks. The veracity of these flooding creeks has washed away trunks mains that span these creeks in five locations causing major damage that could be estimated in excess of $100,000. The General Manager, Mr Tony Perry, stated that the effect of this damage has resulted in a number of towns and villages being denied access to water from Lake Rowlands and therefore, to ensure that consumers are not without water, groundwater sources at Gooloogong and Cudal have been brought into operation to supply the following towns and villages: Grenfell, Gooloogong, Canowindra, Moorbel, Eugowra, Cargo, Cudal and Manildra. Every effort is being made to complete temporary repairs to these trunk mains, which are estimated to be completed within seven days. Permanent repairs will be carried out once waters in the creeks have receded and machinery access to these locations is possible. In the meantime, the General Manager is appealing to consumers in the affected areas to avoid any unnecessary water usage until the repairs are completed and all towns and villages are restored to the Lake Rowlands supply.

Corn Pancakes & Avocado Cream

cup polenta 2 tbsp grated cheese 2 tbsp melted butter Salt cup boiling water cup fresh corn kernels 2 avocados 3 tbsp sour cream 2 tsp fresh lemon juice Cayenne pepper Place polenta in a food processor & grind to a fine flour, add cheese, 1 tbsp of the butter & salt. Add enough boiling water to make a thick batter, & stir in the corn. Heat frying pan with remainder of butter. Drop spoonfuls of batter into pan & cook until golden brown. Remove and keep warm. To make the avocado cream, mash the avocado with sour cream, lemon juice, & cayenne pepper & salt to taste. To serve, place one or two corn pancakes on each plate with a tbsp of avocado cream on top. A great accompaniment to grilled chicken, steak or chops.

CLASSIC BUSH BASH The Bush Council Easter Rally is coming to Canowindra on Easter Sunday 8 April, bringing 208 vehicles. The Orange District Antique Motor Club is hosting the annual event, and entrants' cars must be over thirty years old. It is envisaged that the cars will park all the way up Gaskill Street in order of age, which will be closed off at 11am to allow the vehicles to park up the entire length of the street, from Blatchford to Ryall Streets. This street closure will be in effect until 4pm. The vehicle parade will enter Gaskill Street from the Blatchford Street end and park up both sides. Due to it being Easter Sunday, the disturbance to the local community should be very limited. Canowindra businesses will be open, and lunches for the rally participants will be available from all food outlets and the Lions Club food van. Due to the number of visitors expected from advertising the event around the region, pubs and clubs are encouraged to get involved to cater for the spectators, as this event will be listed in Cowra, Forbes, Cabonne and Parkes visitor information centres and other media outlets. It would be wonderful if all motoring enthusiasts and locals could participate, this spectacular display will be leading our village into the Balloon Challenge, 100 Mile Dinner and the long lunch. Go Canowindra: April is going to be a busy month! Local businesses and residents on Gaskill Street are courteously asked to ensure that there are no cars parked in Gaskill Street during this closure, to enhance the effect of vintage cars parked on our heritage main street. It might look a bit out of place if the latest Commodore is stuck in the middle of these vintage, veteran and classic machines! The programme is currently being fine-tuned, however you will be advised as more details are confirmed. PRIORITY SCHOOLS PROGRAM (PSP) SURVEY Priority Schools Program provides additional funding to identified schools for resources, literacy, numeracy, staffing and programs that support the students. These schools are identified every four years by a survey of families. Canowindra Public and High Schools are asking parents and carers to take part in the PSP survey that were sent home with students on Monday and are due back this Friday 9 March. The survey is completely confidential and requires you to be honest with your answering. The surveys are to be returned when completed to the school and are sent away to be collated. SWIMMING CLUB Due to the torrential downpours which caused the river to flood, there was no swimming club on Friday. However this is the perfect opportunity to remind everyone that the Swimming Club AGM will be held on Friday 30 March prior to the Presentation to swimmers. This year we are seeking a few new committee people as secretary, Anna Stanley, and computer race secretary, Amara Flannery are standing down. A Swimming Club specific laptop comes with the Secretary to enable them to keep up with correspondence, minutes, etc. The computer race secretary has to update the times for the swimmers each week so their new times are on the sheet ready for the next Fridays swimming. Contact Anna or Amara if you are interested in either position or come to the table on Friday nights and we can provide you with the details. Rain permitting the 200 metre freestyle championships will be run this Friday.

LOCAL TALENT STATE C RICKET Local Canowindra High School student and sportsperson Nicole Stevenson represented our village once again at the NSW Combined High Schools Secondary Girls Cricket Carnival held at Cronulla 20-23 February 2012. The Western team won all of their games, with results for the week: R 1 - Western 4/191 def Sth Coast 10/142; R 2 - Western 1/36 def Riverina 10/26; R 3 - Western 3/117 def Hunter 10/114; R 4 FINAL Western 6/131 def Syd SW 5/130. From the players that competed at the carnival, two teams were chosen to play Independent Schools in March at Curl Curl on the Northern Beaches in Sydney. The First XI includes two girls from the Western side: Nicole Harbison from Cobar, and Sara Darney from Wellington; and the Second XI has Brittany Naden also from Wellington, and Amy Edgar from Cowra. This is inspiring stuff for Amy who has just turned 14 and is in Year 9 at Cowra High School. In one of those surprising moments of Canowindra magic, one of the umpires for the Western team games was none other than John Williams, the father of our very own Reverend Jono Williams, of the Co-operating Anglican Church Parish of Canowindra, and Uniting Church linked congregations of Canowindra, Cranbury & Cudal. Ironically for Nicole Stevenson, she survived a week of intense cricket competition in Sydney only to suffer a leg injury playing touch football last Monday night. Fortunately though there was no permanent damage, so her cricket, soccer and league tag future is safe.

COUNCILLOR'S CORNER
The first thing that I would like to say is that my full thanks must go to our local volunteers from the SES for their time, which they all did on a voluntary basis to watch and manage the road closure at the John Grant bridge all surrounding roads. Secondly, I ask for patience with regards to the repair of the roads. Council is aware that certain roads have been badly damaged and will need major repairs. I can state that I will ask Council to seek as much funding as possible from the State and Federal Governments for this so that Council can get as much repair work done as possible along the FULL lengths of the roads. I say this as I believe that every square centimetre of road will have been affected by this amount of water. Finally, the BBQ at the pool as been rescheduled to next Saturday, 10th March at 4:00pm.
