DONT BE A WITNESS, GET INTO FITNESS! Congratulations Cormac Lamond, a Year 9 student at Canowindra High School, for his winning entry in the Slogan Competition above. Thank you to all who submitted their catchy, amusing and imaginative entries to give the Canowindra Community Health Centres Better Life Fitness Path Project a new image. The community meeting at the Canowindra Health Centre last Thursday night was well attended by a cross section of our community. Project Coordinator Julie Middleton had an idea 18 months ago, and this meeting was the beginning of realising her dream. Based on the success of the Better Life program, the hospital gym and Aquatherapy sessions, Julie knew there was a need in town for a safe, cheap and accessible way to increase and maintain fitness. As the north end of our Sports oval is one of the major entrances into our town, and is bare and under utilised, it was the logical choice. Stage One of the project comprises building a 2.5 metre track that meanders around the perimeter of the site; each corner containing an exersite of gym equipment pieces similar to the one pictured above, which is Stage Two. Stage Three is landscaping the path, as per the design being developed by Sally Bourne, whose efforts can be seen around town at Memorial Park and the Public School. Sue Johnson, physiotherapist from the hospital presented her research on the choice of exercise equipment and how it was specifically developed to suit outdoor conditions, durability and ease of use for all ages and abilities. More information will be presented in The Phoenix over the coming weeks, once The Show is over. However should you require more information, please call Julie Middleton at the Health Centre on 02 6344 1314 or Jo at The Phoenix on 0418 413 753.

CALLING FOR VOLUNTEERS. The next financial year will see 80 years of service to the Canowindra community by the Canowindra Hospital Auxiliary, and as the public would be aware, the Hospital Auxiliary over the years has contributed greatly to the care and welfare of patients by donating equipment to the Soldiers Memorial Hospital, but as with all Committees, we are getting older in the ranks and we are now calling for volunteers to step up and become a part of this community committee, we meet every fourth Monday of the month commencing at 2pm at the Community Health Centre and you would be made most welcome, maybe your kids have left home and/or started school, or you are new to our community and you are at loose ends and have time on your hands, well there is nothing more rewarding than giving back to your community in some small way, if you are interested and would like to talk to a member of the Committee dont hesitate to contact Peggy Beath (President) 02 6344 2035, Jan Mills (Treasurer) 02 6344 1197 or myself and we will be happy to explain the function and commitment of the Auxiliary. Regards Jenny Weaver, Secretary Canowindra Hospital Auxiliary 02 6344 1335

Marc, Deb, Zac, Jai and Beau Wheeldon would like to thank the fire fighters, police and all who tried to save our house from fire on Saturday 13 August 2011. We would also like to thank the people of Canowindra, Eugowra and Forbes who generously gave us clothes, toys, groceries, money and who organised fund raisers. It has been a devastating shock to lose our house, however, the generosity of people has been a humbling experience and we are forever grateful and appreciative of your kindness. Thank you. Sincerely, Marc and Deb Wheeldon
High Accolade for Cabonne GM Cabonne Councils General Manager Graeme Fleming has been given one of the highest accolades in Local Government by being appointed one of three trustees for the prestigious Bluett Memorial Award. The A.R. Bluett Memorial Award is presented each year to the Council that has made the greatest relative progress and is considered to be the highest honour to which a Council can aspire. The Award has been made annually since 1945 and the three trustees are the sole judges. Mr Fleming will begin a five-year term on January 1 next year, replacing the Trust Chairman John Flannery. The long serving Cabonne General Manager was the unanimous nomination of Local Government Managers Australia (NSW) to succeed Mr Flannery who has served on the Trust for the past 10 years. Mr Fleming will be only the fourth Local Government manager in the past 75 years to be a Bluett trustee, with Roy Stuckey serving more than 30 years and Richard Conolly for 15 years before Mr Flannerys appointment. The other trustees are appointed by the Presidents of the Local Government Association and NSW Shires Association. Mr Fleming will join Cr Beverley Giegerl from Hurstville Council and Cr Bill Bott from Corowa Council. LGMA (NSW) President Mark Ferguson congratulated Mr Fleming, saying his appointment was a particularly significant honour given the long history and prestige associated with the Award. He said a review panel unanimously selected Mr Fleming from three LGMA nominees. Cabonne Mayor Bob Dowling said the appointment was an outstanding tribute to Mr Fleming and his work as Shire Clerk and General Manager with Cabonne Council since 1987. Indeed it is a real privilege for Cabonne to have a manager who is so highly respected within this industry and I know he will do an excellent job in upholding the traditions of this Award, Cr Dowling said. Cabonne Council won the A.R. Bluett Award in 1999 and last year received a rarely-awarded highly commended honour.

FOLK@CANOWINDRA THIS SUNDAY PLEASE mark the last Sunday afternoon of the month as your 'must-do' live music event! There can't be a better place to be at this time slot in the central west, if you are a lover of creativity, music, poetry and community! folk@canowindra has been growing steadily in numbers and quality; and there are always great surprises to be had, as new performers find out about us. This month's feature act is Mark Corkery, from Young. Mark has been around the solo music scene, and as parts of various ensembles, since the late 90s; regularly sliding between genres such as folk, blues, funk, rock, post-rock, electronic and more recently 'folk-tronica'. The common thread in amongst all of this has been the raw uniqueness of Mark's vocal style and his use of emotive melodies set to whatever stylistic backdrop he encounters. While Mark has been relatively quiet on the music front over the course of the past two years due to a change of scenery from Sydney to Young, with work and family commitments, he is now beginning to seek outlets for performance once again. Hope to see you at taste Canowindra 42 Ferguson Street Sunday 25 September from 4-6pm. Listeners are just as welcome as performers, and the venue is family friendly. Entry is free, with a donation box for the feature performer's expenses. Any enquiries, contact Nerida Cuddy on 0429 048 603. COWRA V ISITORS GUIDE 2012 This marketing tool is essential for wide promotion of Canowindra and is designed to attract potential visitors to Cowra and our village. We trust that you will participate in the guide and please do not hesitate to contact either of us for further information or clarification, Fiona Ferguson: Age of Fishes Museum on 02 6344 1008; or Nick Jacobs: Canowindra Trading Post on 02 6344 1529.

CANOWINDRA HISTORICAL S OCIETY The Show: The Canowindra countryside is a patchwork of green and gold for the 110th Show on 23/24 September. The Historical Societys table in the Burdett Hall will sell books, tell stories and display memorabilia, including a framed silver shield awarded in 1917 to William Cobley for winning Champion Clydesdale four years in succession. Carmel Bryant, new member and regular Tuesday morning volunteer, will display some of her winning exhibits and John Farley has a collection of his Show trophies. Cottage Painted: Assisted by a Cabonne Council Community Improvement Grant, the 101-year-old Railway Cottage has been re-painted and looks great. Thanks to Anne Vincent who liaised with painters. Canowindra Heritage Plaques: The Society is to assist Heritage Adviser, David Scobie, and Cabonne Council with a project to put permanent plaques on heritage buildings in Canowindras CBD. Building owners are invited to share with Council the cost of plaques of top quality weatherproof brass for about $320 each. Texts would be about 30 words, less than the temporary plaques placed in windows in Gaskill Street for the Railway Centenary, which were researched and designed by Historical Society members, 5-6 owners are invited to participate in Stage 1 when application forms become available. Happy birthday: Congratulations to our patron, Berna Wright, on her 90th birthday celebrated recently. Granddaughter of Canowindra pioneer, TJ Finn, Berna is a keen local historian who has co-authored several Society publications. She was treasurer when floods of applications for plaques and inscribed brick pavers had to be processed for the Pre 1901 Pioneers Wall and Citizens Pathway opened in 2001. More pavers are added each year, and orders for new pavers to be unveiled 12 November will close very soon. Cost is $40 and application forms are available from the Historical museum. As the museum will not be open during this weekend, forms will be on the Society table at The Show. New members interested in helping preserve the very colourful and important history of Canowindra and surrounds are encourage to attend the next meeting which will be held at the Museum on Tuesday 11 October at 10am. For more information please call Society Secretary Diane Arandt on 02 6344 7100 or email dmarandt@activ8.net.au

CANOWINDRA COMMUNITY GARDEN The countdown is on for the official opening of the Canowindra Community Garden. With just over a month until celebrity organic gardener Costa Georgiadis cuts the green ribbon, there will be a flurry of activity to ensure the day is both productive and rewarding for all. The CCG Working Group aims to have enough materials and manpower on the opening day so that community participants can put down the foundations of the garden, including raised garden beds, compost heaps, worm farms, and the first of what is hoped to be many vegetable plots. Working Group spokesperson Chris Cuddy says that the whole community is invited to participate in the garden in whatever way they can. We know there are people in our community with a wealth of knowledge and experience in growing productive gardens, and there are many more who want to learn said Mr Cuddy. We are hoping that the gardens will provide a meeting point for members of the community, whether they be gardeners, students, cooks, or people simply wanting to be actively involved within the community he said. Preliminary approval has been given to use the grounds of the Uniting Church, on the corner of Blatchford and Short Streets, which is central and accessible for most members of the community. The official opening of the Community Garden will take place Thursday 27 October, but before then a working bee will be held on the weekend of 15-16 October to establish a boundary fence and basic infrastructure of the garden. With the aim of the garden to be environ-mentally friendly the working group aims to use as many recycled materials as possible. The CCG Working Group has compiled a wish list of items needed for the establishment of the garden, and is calling on anyone in the community to donate items, no matter how big or small. The group is grateful for any donations, and hopes that if anyone has any of the following items as excess they would be happy to see them put to good use in the community. An initial list follows: Unwanted gardening tools and wheelbarrows Used fencing materials (chicken wire is ideal) Poly pipe and fittings for irrigation Shade cloth Seedlings Sheep poo Old bikes For more information please contact Chris Cuddy on 0427 077 798 or Liz Mitchell on 0427 548 891.

1L glass jar with spring or plastic lid 1 cabbage, approx 1kg 1 tbsp sea salt 4 tablespoons of Kefir whey (or already fermented sauerkraut as an innoculant, or add another tbsp of salt) 1 tbsp carraway seeds or fresh dill Grate cabbage finely with a grater or food processor, mix with salt in a large food grade plastic bucket. Pound with a wooden meat mallet or plastic potato masher until the juices create suction. Press the mixture into a sterilised glass jar using a wooden spoon. Press firmly until the juice rises to the top and covers the mixture. Leave at least one inch from the top of the jar to allow for expansion. Put the lid on the jar and store in a dark cool place for 3-5 days before putting in the refrigerator. The sauerkraut may be consumed after a couple of weeks, or allow the fermentation process to continue for up to 4 months. As with all fermenting, follow your nose. If it smells off or you have any doubts about the quality, then discard the sauerkraut and start again. Serve with pork and apple sauce for a balance of sweet and sour flavours.

NOT CRICKET Overseeing record spending on roads in the next year is one of the major goals of Cabonne Mayor Bob Dowling who was re-elected for a second term on Monday. The community has told us that road improvements and maintenance are their main priorities and Council will be focussed on carrying out this work throughout the Shire, Cr Dowling said. Cr Dowling said he was honoured to be returned as Mayor and thanked his fellow Councillors for the faith and confidence they had shown in him and Cr Gosper. This Council is about all of us, Councillors and staff, working together as a team to achieve the best we can for our residents and ratepayers, he said.
