Introduction
Purpose
The overall objective of this document is to provide a means of validation for the
AutoPIPE computer program to analyze and produce accurate results for a variety of
piping models as installed in a specific operating environment.
The accuracy of the AutoPIPE program is verified by Bentley during execution of Alpha
Tests, which are performed prior to any commercial or Quality Assured release. Alpha
Tests consist of a matrix of test systems designed to capture key feature attributes
related to numeric and functional processing. Each set of test outputs is compared to a
prepared set of expected results (i.e. hand calculations, some other well established
computer program, etc.), and evaluated for acceptance. The test matrix has been
developed, verified, and documented per the requirements of the Bentley Software
Quality Assurance Procedures (D/N# QAP). This document represents only a selected
sampling of test systems and results from the entire Alpha Test matrix.
Bentley provides QA & Reporting service subscribers with the Acceptance Test Set
(ATS) in order for the client to verify and validate proper operation of the AutoPIPE
program as installed. The ATS is made available to Bentley Select subscribers as a
convenience since software validation and verification is a common requirement of
mandated quality control procedures.
As stated above, many program features are verified by the ATS. However, it should
not be construed as being complete for testing of all program functions. Bentley is
constantly developing additional tests for specific program features as the need arises.
Until new test sets can be incorporated in this document, the end user (validation tester)
must be responsible for creating suitable test systems where ones are not supplied.
Provided
1.
2.
Test Set Execution Status Matrix (see Appendix A). These forms provide a
summary list of all verification and validation test systems contained in this
document. The forms are formatted to allow individual approval on each test
system as it is verified.
3.
A downloadable setup program for the AutoPIPE ATS from Bentley SELECT
services Online (http://selectservices.bentley.com/) containing all input files
required to properly execute each of the verification and validation test systems
and reference output files.
Recommended Procedures
A. Base Method
The following is recommended as the Base Method procedure for executing the ATS for
the Windows edition of AutoPIPE:
1. Download the setup program for the AutoPIPE ATS from Bentley SELECT services
Online and run it to install its contents to the hard disk on your computer. The
uncompressed input files (DAT, CMB, UNT, and SPC) require at least 1.5 MB of
hard disk space. Remember that additional free disk space is needed in order to
execute the program and create output files. The setup program will guide you
step-by-step through the installation. The default destination directory is
"C:\Bentley\AutoPIPE V8I\ATS". The input files will be placed in the specified
destination and the previously verified output files will be placed in a directory
named OUT located in the destination directory. Once all the files have been
installed, the setup program will display the final dialog with instructions and permit
review of the README.ATS file (an icon will be added to the program group
allowing review of this file at a later time). Upon pressing Finish the installation is
complete.
2. Make a copy of the Test Set Execution Status Matrix form supplied in Appendix A.
These forms provide a means for logging what test examples have been performed,
by whom, and when the runs were completed.
3. (If archive is required) store all output files (i.e. *.HGR & *.OUT) and other files (i.e.
*.LIN, *.EIG, etc.) generated by executing the entire test set on CD or floppy disks.
More than 1 floppy diskette will be required if the entire test set is run according to
the instructions.
AutoPIPE V8i - Acceptance Test Set
4. Execute AutoPIPE and perform the testing as per the documented procedures for
each respective test system. Then, compare the results produced by AutoPIPE to
the results reported in this document. If the results agree with those documented,
record a successful execution on the Test Set Execution Status Matrix form.
5. At regular intervals during your testing, archive all files (both input and output) to the
diskettes formatted in step 3 to CD, or to some other archive location such as a
network drive. Once a test system has been successfully executed and backed up,
its associated files (input and output) may be deleted from the working directory.
This may be necessary to clear enough disk space for continued execution of the
test set.
6. Successful execution of all test systems validates the installation of the program on
the current hardware and operating environment. Completed status forms, backup
diskettes, and approval forms (along with appropriate review) constitute an
acceptable record of the validation process for this installation.
2.
After installing the AutoPIPE V8I ATS in step 1, the AutoPIPE Program Group
should contain four new icons: ATS Documentation, AutoPIPE Readme.ATS,
Execute AutoPIPE V8I ATS, and Review AutoPIPE ATS Results in Error.log.
3.

To begin the automated system processing, select the "Execute AutoPIPE V8I
ATS for Windows" icon from the AutoPIPE Program Group. The following
window is displayed:
6.
Select the "Run ATS" menu option to display the following dialog:
Select the directory where AutoPIPE V8I is installed. When the directory is
correct, "autopipe.exe" will be displayed in the list of files (for example autopipe
should be displayed twice below "File Name" in the dialog. Upon accepting the
above dialog, the automated process begins by executing the RUNQA.BAT
commands. A progress bar displays the completion status of the run.
Most of the screens that would appear during a normal interactive AutoPIPE
session will be displayed as the automated processing executes. If an error or
warning message is encountered, the automated system processing (AutoPIPE
execution) is halted until the note in the Message Window is cleared (by pressing
ENTER) manually.
NOTE:
10
7.
Upon completion of the automated runs a prompt is displayed that the ATS was
finished successfully. Review, and archive, the text file ERROR.LOG by
selecting the "Review AutoPIPE ATS Results in ERROR.LOG" icon. Any
differences between the generated OUT files and the reference OUT files will be
summarized in this file. Note that there will always be a few differences captured
in the log file. These differences are due to the date/time stamping of the
analysis files which are captured in the Analysis Summary sub-report produced
for several (but not all) of the test systems. Also, there may be minor numeric
differences, refer to the Acceptance Criteria section for further details.
Acceptance Criteria
The verified AutoPIPE results published in this document, and located in the OUT
directory of the AutoPIPE V8I Acceptance Test Set are from the "AutoPIPE Nuclear
edition. The results produced by AutoPIPE Nuclear on any computer should match
these published values exactly. Due to differences in computer architecture and
operating systems, other releases of AutoPIPE may produce results that are slightly
different from the published values. However, the difference in values should meet the
following criteria:
1.
2.
The sign of result items associated with dynamic analysis (e.g. mode shapes,
participation factors, etc.) may be different; however, the magnitude should meet
the first criteria.
Should any questions arise during the verification process please contact the AutoPIPE

Purpose:
System Configuration:
Procedure:
1.
ANALYZE:
Perform a Static (nonlinear) analysis and solve for the gravity load
case (GR) only. Use the default NONLINEAR ANALYSIS dialog
tolerances, and (load) sequencing.
2.
RESULT:
Theory & Results: The pipe is restrained by continuous, longitudinal elastic soil springs.
An axial load of 700 kips is applied at point A01. With the defined soil properties, this
loading produces elastic deformation in the region near the anchored point (A00), and
inelastic deformation in the region near the free end point (A01).

2.
RESULT:
Produce an Output Report containing only the Frequency subreport. Use the File/Print command to send the .OUT file to the
printer for a hard copy.
Results: There is a discrepancy in the NUREG manual between the input data listing and
the model illustration for the orientation of the supports at points A11, and A13. For one
geometric configuration (this model), only the frequency data correlates to the published
NUREG values. For the other configuration (QA113B), only the force and moment data
correlates to the published NUREG values. This problem has been confirmed by other
software; and NUREG itself has acknowledged the inconsistency.

Purpose:
System
Configuration:
Procedure:
1.
ANALYZE:
2.
RESULT:
Theory: For systems with closely spaced modes, as in this example, the Grouping
combination method (a close mode ratio equal to 10% is used) gives more accurate
results than the SRSS method for forces and displacements.
Expected Results: In general, the Grouping method results (load combination R2)
should be larger than those of the SRSS method (load combination R1). AutoPIPE results
for the load combination R1 should match SUPERPIPE's results for the response
spectrum analysis STSS; and AutoPIPE results for R2 should match SUPERPIPE's
results for GRUP.

Purpose:
System Configuration:
Procedure:
1.
ANALYZE:
Theory: First the hot load (Fhot), and the thermal movement (thermal) at each hanger
location is determined. Then, AutoPIPE calculates a cold load (Fcold) for an assumed
spring size and spring rate per the following equation:
If both Fhot and Fcold fall within the published working range capacity, the spring is available
for use. From the list of available springs (Refer to the AutoPIPE Reference Information in
the AutoPIPE Online Help), AutoPIPE selects the spring with the shortest range and the
lowest spring rate. Refer to the AutoPIPE Reference Information in the AutoPIPE Online
Help for more details on the automatic hanger selection procedure.

Purpose:
System Configuration:
Procedure:
1.
ANALYZE:
Perform a Static (linear) analysis and solve for the wind load cases
(W1, & W2) only.
2.
RESULT:
Theory: The structure is statically indeterminate to the third degree. The method of
consistent deformations is used to solve load combination W1 (assuming equal distribution
of the lateral load by the columns). Thus, force and displacement results are easily
obtainable. However, the force (matrix) method is used to solve load combination W2,
limiting results to forces and moments only.
