GRADING SYLLABUS

40 COACHING POINTS
The coaching points listed, form the essence of kickboxing which are to be aspired to from the outset of your training. Once mastered, they will to help you achieve your kickboxing goals and form the basis of all the basic techniques outlined in the syllabus. They also form the main part of your assessment during grading, for all grades from Red to Black belt and thereafter. So, refer to them regularly and they will guide you to becoming an expert kickboxer! Stance 1) Stance width 2) Stance length 3) Heels raised 4) Knees bent Guard 5) Hands up 6) Chin down 7) Elbows in 8) Snap back Movement 9) Slide step 10) On toes 11) Head 12) Pivoting Punching 13) Speed 14) Power 15) Reaction 16) Shoulders 17) Elbows 18) Hinge 19) Knees 20) Footwork Kicking 21) Speed 22) Power 23) Accuracy 24) Foot twist 25) Retraction 26) Knee lift Kick as quick as possible to beat your opponents guard snap back Kick as hard as possible for 70% of the time, eventually you are going to land the KO kick, make sure it counts! You dont score by kicking your opponents arms or the air, be on target! Twist the lead or rear foot for round kicks, to kick body weight Get your foot back on the ground to a correct stance after kicking as quick as possible to avoid getting knocked down from a counter move Ensure that the kicking leg knee is raised sufficiently before kicking. This is mostly important for front, side and back kicks. Punch as quick as possible to beat your opponent to the punch Punch as hard as possible for 70% of the time, eventually you are going to land the KO punch, make sure it counts! Be quick to react when a target becomes available to hit Use BOTH shoulders equally to gain maximum penetration. Use shoulders to protect chin when punching. Behind straight punches & uppercuts and raised high for hooks Lead heel raise, rear heel raise when punching Essential for punching body weight Use knees to improve power of punches, especially uppercuts Use footwork to improve the power of punches push and drag to maintain stance (1 to 4) DO NOT WALK Keep on toes during movement NOT flat footed (Out fighting) Keep your head moving to make it a hard target (In fighting) Using pivoting to avoid attacks not just backwards movement 70% of kickboxing offence is to the head KEEP YOU HANDS UP! Keep your guard discipline whilst kicking - dont put arms out to balance 70% of KOs occur by hitting the chin - hide it behind your hands 30% of kickboxing offence, is to the body PROTECT YOUR RIBS! Always snap your punches back to guard to keep protected for resistance to hook punches and round kicks for resistance to straight punches and straight kicks slightly raised for mobility and speed of movement for upper body mobility and punching power

Normally 3 days before the event. If you compete, ensure you make weight Ensure that you complete enough cardio training to last the fight, you do not want to lose because you are Gassed Get running! 33) Eyes

STARTING OUT The first step of training is to learn the first 26 coaching points in conjunction with the basics from the grade level you are working towards. You will find that you will soon get fitter by attending class however, by orange belt you will need to be attending classes regularly and supplementing your training outside the class. This could be gym work, running or cycling. GRADING ASSESSMENT The first part of the assessment is to demonstrate the 9 basic moves from the grade you are going for. If you demonstrate correctly, you will be invited to progress to the coaching assessment. This involves applying the basics in combinations of 2 to 4 moves applied to focus pads with movement, in a freestyle manner. These can include basic moves from your current grade or previous grades. For suggestions, refer to appendix A. Finally, you will then be required to demonstrate your fitness. You will need to achieve a minimum 50% (13/26) score to pass the grade and be awarded your belt. PROGRESSION You will now have been training for 12 to 16 months and should be making good progress. The next phase is to purchase new training equipment and incorporate sparring into your skill set. This will initially be touch boxing to build your confidence, then on to light continuous kickboxing. This level is sufficient for most people however, if you wish you can also progress to full contact sparring. This is not for everyone and is certainly not compulsory. You will be expected to increase your knowledge & experience to include the 40 coaching points, variations of the basic punches and more challenging kicks. Your fitness levels should be well developed by now and you should be attending class at least twice weekly and keeping up with your gym or road work (running or cycling) GRADING ASSESSMENT The first part of the assessment is to demonstrate the 9 basic moves from the grade you are going for. If you demonstrate correctly, you will be invited to progress to the coaching assessment. This involves applying the basics in combinations of 2 to 5 moves applied to focus pads with movement, in a freestyle manner and also in sparring. These can include basic moves from your current grade or previous grades. For suggestions, refer to appendix A. Finally, you will then be required to demonstrate your fitness. You will need to achieve a minimum 60% (24/40) score to pass the grade and be awarded your belt. EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENT Bag gloves - Hand wraps - Gum shield - Head guard - Kick boots - Shin guards

REFINEMENT You will now have been training for 24 to 32 months and now be in the refinement stage of your kickboxing skills. The 40 coaching points will be ingrained and natural and you will be a proficient fighter. Your fitness levels should be excellent by now and you should be attending class at least two or three per week, attending sparring classes and intensifying your gym or road work (running or cycling) GRADING ASSESSMENT The first part of the assessment is to demonstrate the 9 basic moves from the grade you are going for. If you demonstrate correctly, you will be invited to progress to the coaching assessment. This involves applying the basics in combinations of 2 to 6 moves applied to focus pads with movement, in a freestyle manner and also in sparring. These can include basic moves from your current grade or previous grades. For suggestions, refer to appendix A. Finally, you will then be required to demonstrate your fitness. You will need to achieve a minimum 70% (28/40) score to pass the grade and be awarded your belt. EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENT Bag gloves - Hand wraps - Gum shield - Head guard - Kick boots - Shin guards

BROWN BELT White stripe
THE JOURNEY TO BLACK BELT You will now have been training consistently for 3 years or more and will be looking to achieve the much coveted Black belt You will be at the top of your game, will be attending classes three times a week and be very much involved in academy events. The best way to perfect your own technique is to teach it to others. When teaching kickboxing, you dissect every aspect of your technique as you demonstrate and correct the form of lower grades. As a result, your own form becomes much crisper and closer to the required level for black belt. To be awarded your first coaching grade you will need to cover the following:1. 4 months at qualifying brown belt 1st level reviewing red, yellow & orange belt syllabus. You will also be required to have learnt the first 26 coaching points. The candidate is to be able to instruct sections of a class with supervision such as warm up from prepared lesson plans and is to teach and demonstrate knowledge of red, yellow and orange belt syllabus to lower grades. The candidate is to assist in a beginner to intermediate level grading including demonstrating syllabus to lower grades where required. The successful candidate to be awarded a brown belt with white stripe

CLOSING STAGES You are finally on the closing stages to obtaining a Black Belt and will have been training for 3 years or more and will be looking to put the finishing touches to your technique and overall kickboxing game. In the final coaching section you will be required to have a deep knowledge of the intermediate and advanced grading syllabus and sparring coaching points (27-40) To be awarded your second coaching grade you will need to cover the following:1. 4 months at intermediate brown belt grade spent reviewing green, blue, purple and brown belt syllabus. The candidate is to be able to instruct sections of a class with supervision such as combinations from prepared lesson plans and is to teach and demonstrate knowledge of green, blue, purple and brown belt syllabus to lower grades. The candidate is to assist in an intermediate to advanced level grading including demonstrating syllabus to lower grades where required. The successful candidate will be awarded a brown belt with black stripe

COMPLETION You are finally ready to take your black belt test. You will have been training consistently for 4 years and be in peak condition, both physically and mentally. At this stage, you will have all the skills required to progress to instructor level. INSTRUCTING Teaching practice is to be completed before you undertake the black belt test. GRADING ASSESSMENT The grading for black belt is an extreme test on character and is very demanding. If you pass the test you will feel like a black belt It will last approximately 3 hours and will follow the following schedule:RUN 3 mile run within 30 minutes BASICS 63 basics from Red belt to Brown belt, to be tested on pads in a formal manner.
