Standards: New York State P-12 Common Core Learning Standards for Mathematics Arithmetic with Polynomials & Rational Expressions A-APR Perform arithmetic operations on polynomials. 1. Understand that polynomials form a system analogous to the integers, namely, they are closed under the operations of addition, subtraction, and multiplication; add, subtract, and multiply polynomials. Reasoning with Equations & Inequalities A-REI Solve equations and inequalities in one variable. 4. Solve quadratic equations in one variable. b. Solve quadratic equations by inspection (e.g., for x2 = 49), taking square roots, completing the square, the quadratic formula and factoring, as appropriate to the initial form of the equation. Recognize when the quadratic formula gives complex solutions and write them as a bi for real numbers a and b. Technology Standards: 2. Research and Information Fluency Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information. b. Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources and media. c. Lesson Objectives: A. Students will know what a binomial is defined to be. B. Students will understand what factoring is and why factoring is needed in mathematics. C. Students will be able to identify what the mnemonic device FOIL stands for. F First O Outer I Inner L Last D. Students will be able to apply the FOIL method to multiplying binomials of various difficulties. Introduce the Learning Activity: A. First, the teacher will give the students a basic definition of a binomial, as well as write an example on the board. B. Then, the teacher will talk about multiplying two binomials by each other. C. Next, the teacher will show the students a YouTube video called The FOIL Method Multiplying Binomials - YourTeacher.com. D. The teacher will then go over an example of the FOIL method quickly on the board. E. After, the students will be asked to use an online worksheet explaining the FOIL method further to work by themselves on a worksheet online called FOIL Method Worksheet. a. The teacher will walk around answering questions and offering assistance while this is being done. F. Lastly, the students will submit the number of questions wrong on the worksheet into the teacher via email at the end of the lesson. Provide Information: A. The teacher will provide the students with the following definition of a binomial: A binomial is an algebraic expression (or a polynomial) containing two terms that are not like terms. Example: 4X+3 or 10Y-5 B. The teacher will provide an example to the students of how to multiply two binomials using the steps that were introduced to the students in the video shown to them in class. The teacher will demonstrate the FOIL method. Example: (X+3)(X+2)= X^2+5X+6 Example: (X+3)(X-2)= X^2+X-6 Example: (2X^2-2)(X-4)= 2X^3-8X^2-2X+8 Provide Practice: A. The students will be allowed to practice their knowledge of FOILing using an online worksheet that they will find on the internet. a. The students will multiply binomials of various difficulties by each other. b. The students then will submit their answers and report back to the teacher how many problems they got wrong.
Provide Knowledge of Results: A. The students will receive verbal feedback while the teacher walks around the room to see how all of them are handling each problem. The teacher will help the students through problems that they have issues with. B. The students will receive written feedback after emailing the teacher the number of problems they got wrong on the worksheet. Review the Activity: A. At the end of the lesson, the students will be asked to describe the mnemonic device FOIL and what it means. B. The students will also be asked if anyone would be willing to do an example of FOILing on the board for bonus points on the next exam. Example: (3X^3-1)(X-1)= 3X^4-3X^3-X+1 Method of Assessment: A. The students will be assessed by emailing the number of problems that they got wrong on an online worksheet to the teacher at the end of the class. The assignment will count as a classroom grade.
