Hi Captain Lim, Can I know the salary structure of pilots in Malaysia (MAS) and Singapore Airlines (SIA)? Being a pilot, speaking fluent English is very important. Do you know how to improve one?s English speaking skills? (Besides practicing speaking English with anyone everyday) Thank you very much. English Language It is true that English is a very important language in global aviation today. Singaporean and Malaysian expatriate pilots have been warmly welcomed in countries such as Korea and China (paying them up to USD15, 000.00 per month) because of their good command in the English language. Why so? I was told that, in order for their airlines to fly to the US, there is a requirement that a certain percentage of their pilots must be able to communicate well in English. In fact, ICAO will be making it mandatory for all pilots operating in International airspace to achieve and hold a certain degree and level of proficiency in the English Language by 5th March 2008. This is to facilitate an acceptable level of communication between the pilots and the Air Traffic Controllers during air operations. Pilots would be graded on the levels of English proficiency and those who do not meet a certain minimum level would not be allowed to renew their flying licenses or have restrictions endorsed in their licenses. To improve your English speaking skills, I can only suggest that you enroll yourself into a professional course. There are many such courses around and I know of one national TV newsreader that has been coaching people on good communication skill in English for a while now.
