Dear Parents and Friends of The School
Dear Parents and Friends of the School A very successful Open Night was held in the Library on Thursday evening with a large crowd of parents and pupils in attendance. The aim of the evening was to share the opportunities within and the achievements of our senior schools. We were unashamedly promoting our secondary school to families in order that they can make an informed choice for the future schooling of their children.
The format of the evening allowed parents, who have had their children complete their secondary schooling at Lawrence, an opportunity to share the experience. Russell Dickey, Clare Blackmore and Debbie Shaw spoke compellingly about their childrens successes at Lawrence Area School. A summary of the points they made is as follows: * the academic success their child enjoyed allowing successful transition into tertiary studies or vocation * the real support students received in shaping of courses to suit career and learning pathways *the ability to provide breadth of curriculum through the provision of quality distance learning courses which are ably support in school: Otagonet, Telford, Polytech etc * the extra support teachers offered to ensure students succeeded in their studies * the value placed on each student being important * the obvious advantage of small class sizes - with extra attention to be given to students to extend and support * the advantage as a parent of being involved each day in their childs schooling * the saving of money for later years eg to support their children at university or polytech rather than meeting the costs of boarding school * the advantage of knowing their childs teacher really well * the opportunities for leadership their child has enjoyed * the opportunities for sport and representation their child has through the Area Schools connection as well as engaging in local and regional competitions in an array of sport * the opportunities their child has to take part in special activities such as Spirit of New Zealand, Outward Bound and Cultural exchange * the opportunities their child has to contribute to and be involved with the community With regard the last point Daniel Maze, Youth Development Coordinator for Enterprise Clutha spoke very positively about the manner and attitude of our senior students. Daniel has worked with students for the last 14 weeks during which time they have completed a number of voluntary tasks, the most significant of which is the rebuilding of the Fitness Trail below the Domian. Daniel has been most impressed with the students and their willingness to contribute.
Throughout the course of the evening many conversations were held, many questions raised and worthy answers given by parents and staff. Displays decorated the Library. These covered all curriculum areas, NCEA provision and results, OtagoNet, LEOTC, cultural events and opportunities, sporting events and opportunities. These were linked to our Mission Statement we develop Lifelong Learners who are Motivated, Confident and willing to Contribute. As the local school we want to be the school of choice for secondary schooling.
Kind Regards
Parents are invited to further discuss their childs secondary schooling at any time. Please contact the office to arrange an appointment. Our warm thanks is extended to Clare Blackmore, Russell Dickey, Debbie Shaw and Daniel Maze for their valued input. Teachers are to be congratulated for their excellent displays. We are most appreciative of the big crowd of parents and pupils who turned up to support this evening. It was most heartening.
Students, teachers and a big group of parents eagerly looked forward to a visit from their Highlanders Heros. Their helicopter entrance thrilled everyone. Visiting on Friday were; Doug Tietjens, Jacob Ellison and Colin Slade. They entertained students, answered questions, signed autographs and had numerous photos taken. It was a great opportunity for students to interact with their rugby heros and a most enjoyable way to end the school week.
Friday afternoon, we were lining up waiting for the helicopter, then ch, ch, ch, ch, ch, ch, the helicopter flew down. The leaves flew everywhere like birds racing away for a mission. The whole school were lined up waving their flags like crazy. Waitahuna School and Educare were there too. People were cheering, screaming and jumping up and down. When they came out of the helicopter I saw Colin Slade, Doug Tietjens and Jacob Ellison. I screamed when I saw Colin Slade. I couldnt believe he was here at Lawrence Area School. Then we went down to the gym and they introduced themselves and talked a little bit about themselves. After that we had questions. Then we got class photos and some people were handing out flags, comic books and posters. Then we got photos and signatures. They had to go after that, so we headed back to the top field. Two of them went straight to the helicopter but Colin Slade walked up the path and everybody wanted signatures. Heaps of people crowded around him and threw flags and all sorts of stuff over him. Finally he got to the helicopter and then ch, ch, ch, ch, ch, ch, leaves blew everywhere. People were screaming and throwing flags up in the air. Then off they went. I though it was very cool, and nice of them to give up their time to come and see Lawrence Area School. Connie Benington (Year 3)
