MULTIPLICATION OF DECIMALS

Steps

Decimals: Multiplying Decimals

There's a bit of a silly trick to multiplying decimals. It's not really a trick -- it's just how it works -- but, it's so weird that it may seem like a trick. It's going to sound confusing at first. Just read through it, then look at the examples, then read it again. It'll be really easy!

Decimals: Multiplying Decimals

Here's the deal:
1) Ignore the decimal points and multiply as usual... 2) Count how many total digits are on the right side of the decimal points in the guys you are multiplying... 3) Place the decimal point in your answer so there are this many digits to the right.

Decimals: Multiplying Decimals

Let's just do one!

Multiply... Count the spots behind the decimals... Put the decimal point in your answer:

Does our answer make sense? Do a little rounding and think about it... 2.8 is a little less than 3.. 3 x 7 = 21... So, our answer should be a little less than 21. Yep, our answer looks good!

Decimals: Multiplying Decimals

Here's another one !

Before we get into it, what should our answer be close to? Do some rounding... 3 x 6 = 18... So, our answer should be around 18! Here we go! Multiply... Count the spots behind the decimals... Put the decimal point in your answer:

Let's do one more...
Multiply... Count the spots behind the decimals... Put the decimal point in your answer:

DIVISION OF DECIMALS

Dividing Decimals by Whole Numbers

To divide a decimal by a whole number, use long division, and just remember to line up the decimal points:

Example: 13.44 12.

1.12 12)13.44 -12 14 -12 24 -24 0

When rounding an answer, divide one place further than the place you're rounding to, and round the result.

Add 0's to the right of the number being divided, if necessary.

Example:
1.0 6. Round to the nearest thousandth.
To round 0.16666 . . . to the nearest thousandth, we take 4 places to the right of the decimal point and round to 3 places. Here, we round 0.1666 to 0.167, the answer.

Dividing Decimals by Decimals

To divide by a decimal, multiply that decimal by a power of 10 great enough to obtain a whole number. Multiply the dividend by that same power of 10. Then the problem becomes one involving division by a whole number instead of division by a decimal.

Example:
0.144 0.12

1.2

Multiplying the divisor (0.12) and the dividend (0.144) by 100, then dividing, gives the same result.

The answer is 1.2.

Dividing Decimals Quick method: use Long Division without the decimal point then re-insert the decimal point in the answer.

How to Divide Decimals by a whole number

Ignore the decimal point, use Long Division, then put the decimal point in the same spot as the number being divided.
Example 1: Divide 9.1 by 7

Step 1: Divide 91 by 7 using long division Step 2: Put the decimal point in the answer directly above the decimal point in the dividend:

13 7 )91 9 7 21 21 0

Dividing Decimals by a decimal number

Convert it to a whole number first (by multiplying both numbers by 10, 100, etc.) then continue as above

In other words, just follow these steps: Step 1: If not dividing by a whole number, then multiply both numbers by 10 (or 100, or 1000, etc) so that you are dividing by a whole number Step 2: Ignore the decimal point and use Long Division to find the answer Step 3: Then put the decimal point in the answer, directly above the decimal point in the dividend (the number being divided).

Example 2: Divide 5.39 by 1.1

10
Step 1:

5.39 1.1 10

53.9 11

Step 2:

049 11 )539 5 0 53 44 99 99 0
04.9 11 )53.9

Step 3:
The answer is 4.9
