INTRODUCTION:
Isaac Newtonstatedhisthirdlawofmotion,whichisallabout
theAction-Reaction Forces.
Newtonslawofinertiashowstherelationshipbetweenforce
andmotion,whilehislawofaccelerationdemonstratesthe
effectofforcesonmotion.Histhirdlawexplainsthenatureof
forces.Wealwaysfeelthethirdlaweverytimeweinteractwith
objectsaroundus.
Thelawofinteractionstatesthat:

For every action exerted by one body,


there is an equal but opposite force
acting on some other body.

1. Hammer on the nail
Heretheforceexertedbythehammeronthenailisequalin
magnitudeandoppositeindirectiontotheforceappliedbythe
nailonthehammer.

2.Ball being thrown


Anotherexampleisthatwhenwethrowaballupward,forceof
gravityisappliedbytheearthontheball.

3. A person slams a wall.


Supposeapersonslamsthewallwithhisfist.Theforceapplied
bythepersonthroughhisfistonthewallisequaltotheforce
appliedbythewallonthefist.Harderthepersonslamsthewall,
morehegetshurt.Similarprocedureisfollowedwhenaperson
kicksthefootball.

4.How the bus move or run on road?


Tireofthebusappliesforceontheroad.Directionoftheforce
appliedbythetireontheroadisinbackwarddirection.Inreturn
theroadpushesthebusintheoppositedirection,i.e.,inthe
forwarddirection.Inthisway,busmovesontheroad.Ifmoreforce
isappliedbythebusontheroad,buswillmovefaster.

5.Rocket propulsion
Itisshownhowtherocketmovesinthespacebyfollowing
theNewton'sthirdlaw.Actually,whenrocketmovesinthe
spaceitpushesthegasoutsidefromit,i.e.,rocketapplies
forceonthegasesinthebackwarddirection.Asareaction,
thegasesputequalamountofforceontherocketinthe
oppositedirectionandtherocketmovesintheforward
direction.

6.Aswimmerpushesthewaterinthebackwarddirection(action
force)andthewaterexertsaforceontheswimmer(reactionforce)
whichpusheshimforward.

Newtons Third Law Application


Friction:Whenanobjectmovesonthesurfaceorinthe
water,aresistiveforceactsontheobjecttoretarditsmotion.
Thisresistiveforceistermedastheforceoffriction.Forceof
frictionallowsustomove,runandthemovementofvehicles
totakeplace.
This is called as the Force of Friction.
Untiltheappliedforceremainssmallerthantheforceof
friction,bookwillnotmove.Thisforceiscalledasstaticforce
offrictionparticularly.Whentheappliedexternalforce
becomesgreaterthantheforceoffriction,thebookstart
moving.Roughsurfacesoffermoreforceoffrictionthanthe
smoothsurfaces.
