Electrical systems in power plants

- An overview
Conventional Power Plant – 3D rendering

Electrical System – The Vital
Link..
Electrical systems in a power plant are a vital link in the
process of power generation. The vital link includes:

 Starting
 Generation
 Power evacuation & distribution
 Control of auxiliary system
 Support systems
 Emergency backup
Elect. Power to start a power plant
The auxiliaries of a power plant which needs to be put into operation for plant
startup are mostly driven by electrical motors and in some instances using
steam turbine as prime movers ( eg.: feed pumps, fans etc..).

Generation system
The generation system essentially consists
of the following:  Air,H2 or Water cooled
Voltage level
 MVA & MVAR capability
• Generator
 IPBD
• Excitation system  Static
 Brushless
 SPBD
 Cables

• Interconnection with HV system

 High Resistance using
• Neutral Grounding • Resistance
• Transformer

• Electrical & Mechanical Protection

 Vibration monitoring
 Numerical relays  Bearing monitoring
 Discrete relays  Temperature monitoring

Load interconnection – Grid connected PP
To Grid (Load) To Grid (Load)
• Startup power is usually taken from grid by

• All the generated power, less station loads
is exported
• Generally MV & LV system expansion is not
expected
• Normally grid disturbance (black out)

results in unit tripping.

Support Systems
In a power plant in addition to catering to the auxiliaries of
the power plant, the following support systems are
engineered as a part of the electrical discipline.

• Plant safety grounding & Lightning protection

• Lighting system
• Cable and cable carrier systems
• Communication
• Fire alarm & detection system
• Supervisory Control & Data Acquisition
Emergency Systems .
What is an emergency in power plant?.
• Start

Safety • Operation
• Shutdown

Emergency power is provided through:

• Power from a secure system independent of the electrical system of the
power plant
• DG set
• Battery backed AC UPS and DC systems
