Fire Safety Training

Presented by
Nasir Saeed, SPO
Fire
is man’s
best friend
&

worst enemy
Objective:
After this lecture you will learn:
What is fire
Type of fires
How fire spread
Causes of fire
How to control fire
Type of fire extinguishers
Method of use of fire extinguishers
Fire fighting strategy
What is the
FIRE?
Fire is a chemical reaction
between fuel and oxygen
at suitable temperature.
TRIANGLE OF FIRE
 Fuel
 Oxygen
 Heat (in form of temperature)
PRODUCTS OF FIRE
&
EFFECTS ON LIFE SAFETY
 SMOKE

 TOXIC GASES

 HEAT

 FLAME
EFFECTS ON LIFE SAFETY:-
 Suffocation
 Visibility is affected.

 Creates irritation in the respiratory tract.

 Burn & Scald

Principle of Extinction
STARVATION
SMOTHERING

Fuel
COOLING

Fuel
Causes of fires
Such as wood,
paper, cloth,
rubber, trash and
most plastics.
Involve flammable
liquids, oils,
greases and paints
etc.
C

Flammable gases.
Like: Natural Gas,
Butane, Propane &
Methane etc.
Combustible Metals
E

Involve energized
electrical equipment
K
Fire Extinguishers
TYPES OF FIRE
EXTINGUISHER
 Water Type Fire Extinguisher
 AFFF Fire Extinguisher

 Carbon Di Oxide Fire Extinguisher

 Dry Chemical Powder Fire Extinguisher

Fire Extinguishers
Water
For
Class A
Fires
AFFF FIRE EXTINGUISHER
(stored pressure type)
Foam
For
Classes AB
Fires
TYPES:-

There are two types of AFFF

 Portable Stored Pressure Type

 Trolley Mounted Stored

Pressure Type
FIRE EXTINGUISHERS CAPACITY OF AFFF

 Capacity of Portable Extinguisher is

2 Gallons or 10 litters
 Trolley Mounted Fire Extinguisher
are available in following
capacities:-
10 Gallons or 45 Litters
34 Gallons or 150 Litters
CONTENTS:-
 Extinguishing Agent --- AFFF
Foam(Aqueous Film Forming Foam)

 Expelling Agent ---- Nitrogen

Gas
CO2 FIRE EXTINGUISHERS

Carbon

Gaseous
State

Carbon
Dioxide
In Liquid
State

Siphon
Tube
CONTENTS

 Filled in liquid form at a pressure

of 744 lbs psi

 The cylinder is usually filled to

approximately 2/3 of its total
capacity and 1/3 is for pressure
DRY
CHEMICAL
EXTINGUISHER
Stored Pressure Dry Chemical Extinguisher
Fire Extinguisher in hand is better
than two fire trucks on the way
It's easy to remember how to
use a fire extinguisher if you
can remember PASS, which
stands for Pull, Aim, Squeeze,
and Sweep.
Pull
Pull the Pin
This will
allow you to
discharge
the
Aim
 Aim at the base
of the fire.
If you aim at the
flames, the
extinguishing
agent will fly.
Squeeze

 Squeeze the top handle

or lever.

This depresses a
button that releases
the pressurized
extinguishing agent
Sweep

Sweep from
side to side
until the fire is
completely out.
Pull Aim

Squeeze Sweep
The Role Of Fire Extinguisher

The fire extinguisher

must be located properly
and be in good working
order.
The Role of Fire Extinguisher

The fire extinguisher

must be the proper
type for the fire that
occurs.
What to do
in case of a
Fire ?
What to do in case of a fire?

1 Raise fire alarm

or
shout fire fire
Fire Protection Systems
 Fire Extinguishers

 Fire Alarm &

Detection Systems

 Fire Hydrants

 Hose Cabinets &

Risers
SPRINKLERS OPERATING PHILOSOPHY
Fire Protection Systems

SPRINKLER SYSTEMS
Evacuation Time
Class A --- 3 minutes

Class B --- 2 ½
minutes
Building & equipment inspection
 Building must be
periodically checked for
electrical connections/
installations / wirings
 Fire detection system and
fire fighting equipment
must be inspected on
regular basis.
 Proper house keeping
must be done.
Staff education about safety
 Basic fire safety training
must be provided to all
employees
 Everyone must know what
to do incase of fire?
 Practical training of fire
extinguisher considering
P.A.S.S is essential for
each staff member.
 Fire & evacuation drills
must be conducted at least
Emergency Evacuation plan
 Occupants must  Fire plan must be

incase of fire? building to indicate
where to go and emergency exit rout.
whom to ask help ?
Fire Fighting Plan
 A comprehensive fire
fighting plan to be
developed & documented
 Members responsibilities
must be clearly defined.
 Assembly points to be
designated
 Fire fighting equipment
to be placed at accessible
locations.
 Fire exits must be free
from any obstructions
