General Mathematics: Functions and Relations

This document discusses functions and relations in mathematics. It defines a relation as a rule that relates values from one set to another set. A function is a special type of relation where each input is mapped to exactly one output. The document provides examples of relations and functions using ordered pairs and determines whether each example represents a relation, function, or neither. It also discusses domain and range for relations. Key terms are defined such as ordered pairs, input, output, domain, and range.

GENERAL MATHEMATICS

FUNCTIONS AND
RELATIONS

PREPARED BY: IMIE L. FLORES,

LPT 1
Desired Learning Outcomes :
After the discussion, the students
would be able to:
•define functions and relations.
•determine the domain and range of relations, and

•identify whether a relation is a function.

2
Some Definitions-
 A relation is a rule that relates values from a
set of values (called the domain) to a second
set of values (called the range).

 An ordered pair consists of an x and y-coordinate

 A relation may be viewed as ordered pairs, mapping
design, table, equation, or written in sentences

 x-values are input, independent variable,

domain.

 y-values are output, dependent variable, range

3
Example 1. Determine the relationship of the given
machine to its input and output.

Input Machine Output

1. bread 1. toaster 1. toast
2. dirty clothes 2. clean clothes
2. washer
3. raw meat 3. cooked meat
3. oven

4
Example 2:
What makes this a relation?

{(0, 5), (1, 4), ( 2, 3), ( 3, 2), (4, 1), (5, 0)}

• What are the domain?

{0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5}
What are the range?
{-5, -4, -3, -2, -1, 0}
5
Example 3 –
Is this a relation?

Input 4 –5 0 9 –1

Output –2 7

• What is the domain?

{4, -5, 0, 9, -1}
•What is the range?

{-2, 7}
6
Example 4.
Is this a relation?

NO

7
Is a relation a function?

What is a function?
A function is a relation in which
every input has exactly one output.

8
Is a relation a function?
• Focus on the x-coordinates, when given a relation

If the set of ordered pairs has different x-coordinates,

it IS A function
If the set of ordered pairs has same x-coordinates,
it is NOT a function

Y-coordinates have no bearing in determining functions
9
Example 5
{(0, 5), (1, 4), (2, 3), ( 3, 2), (4, 1), (5, 0)}

•Is this a relation?

YES
•Is this a function?
•Hint: Look only at the x-coordinates

YES
10
Example 6
{(–1, 7), (1, 0), ( 2, 3), (0, 8), (0, 5), (–2, 1)}
• Is this a function?
•Hint: Look only at the x-coordinates

NO
• Is this still a relation?

YES
11
Example 7
Which relation mapping represents a function?

Choice One Choice Two

3 –1 2 2
1 2 –1 3
0 3 3 –2

Choice 1

Example 8
Which relation mapping represents a function?

A. B.

Example 9.
 Is this a relation?

Students
(Range)
YES
(Domain)
Amy

Mr. Albert Anna

 Is this a function?
Mrs. Lopez Jenny

Kristel NO
Rose

14
Example 10.
Which situation represents a function?

a. The items in a store to their prices on a certain

date
b. Types of fruits to their colors

There is only one price for A fruit, such as an apple,

from the domain would be
each different item on a associated with more than
certain date. The relation one color, such as red and
from items to price makes green. The relation from
it a function. types of fruits to their colors
is not a function.
15
Relation - In english dictionary it is the
way in which two or more concepts,
objects, or people are connected; a thing’s
effect or relevance to another.

16
Example 1. Determine the relationship of the given
machine to its input and output.

Input Machine Output

1. bread 1. toaster 1. toast
2. dirty clothes 2. clean clothes
2. washer
3. raw meat 3. cooked meat
3. oven

17
Activity 1
Multiple choice.
1. Which of the following relation
is a function?
 A. ((1, 2), (1, 3), (1, 4), (1, 5))
 B. ((0, 1), (2, 3), (4, 5), (6, 7))
 C. ((5, 2), (6, 3), (2, 6), (2, 5))
 D. ((2, 4), (4, 2), (2, 6), (6, 2))

18
2. Which relation mapping
represent a function?
 A. B.

C. D.

19
3. Which of the following relation
that is not a function?
 A. ((2, 4), (4, 2), (2, 6), (6, 2))
 B. ((3, 2), (5, 4), (7, 6), (9, 8))
 C. ((0, 1), (2, 3), (4, 5), (6, 7))
 D. ((1, 3), (2, 5), (6, 8), (7, 9))

20
Activity 2

relation and write it as an ordered pair. At least 10 ordered pair.
