    Stepper motors are driven by a stepper motor driver chip. The chip uses logic control signals to rotate the stepper motor in full or half steps in either the clockwise or counter-clockwise direction. The chip has inputs to control the clock signal, direction, step size, and reset. It provides high current outputs to drive the motor coils based on the logic control signals. Proper timing of the clock signal causes the motor to incrementally rotate one step at a time.

    • Stepper acts on rising edge of clock

    • Min Pulse Width (LOW): 10us

    • Min Pulse Width (HIGH): 10us


    CW/CCW (Pin 10)
    • If (CW/CCW = 0)
    – Stepper moves clockwise

    • If (CW/CCW = 1)
    – Stepper moves counter-clockwise
    Full/Half Step (Pin 9)
    • A full (or half) step is taken on the rising
    edge of each clock cycle.
    • If (Full / Half Step = 0)
    – Stepper moves in full steps
    • If (Full / Half Step = 1)
    – Stepper moves in half steps
    • 1 full step = 2 half steps
    Bias / Set (Pin 6)
    Typically 0.7V below Vm
    • Current out of this pin determines the
    maximum output sink current
    • If pin is opened, outputs = HIGH Z
    • Can act as a reset to the internal logic
    Supply (Vm and Vd)
    • Pins 1(Vd) and 16(Vm)
    • Vm (7.2V to 16.5V)
    – Power supply pin for both the logic circuit and
    the motor coil current.
    • Vd (Vm to Vm+4.5V)
    – Protects the outputs where large voltage
    spikes may occur as the motor coils are
    switched. Typically a diode is connected
    between this pin and Vm.
    L1, L2, L3, and L4
    • Pins 2,3,14, and 15
    • High current outputs for the motor coils.
    • L1 and L2 are connected to one coil.
    • L3 and L4 are connected to another coil.
    Using the EB63
    • Full step mode
    – Clear ‘F/HS’ bit to OFF
    – Change ‘CW/CCW’ bit as desired
    – Use clock by setting and clearing the bit
    repeatedly, with wait commands between
    each set and clear.
    Using the EB63
    • Half step mode
    – Set ‘FS/HS’ bit to ON
    – Change ‘CW/CCW’ bit as desired
    – Use clock by setting and clearing the bit
    repeatedly, with wait commands between
    each set and clear.
