Advent of GPRS
• The impressive growth of cellular mobile telephony as
well as the number of Internet users promises an
exciting potential.

• Rise in the employment level which has created

professionals who require on-demand information
without having to plug into any local cable network.

• Requirement for high-performance wireless internet.

• Need for better utilization of the network, higher

transfer rates and shorter access times.
What is GPRS?
• It is a 2.5G technology as it is a
technology that lies between
second(2G) and third generation(3G)

• GPRS is packet-switched which

means that multiple users share the
single transmission channel, only
transmitting when they have data to
send.

• Packet-switched data under GPRS is

achieved by allocating unused cell
bandwidth to transmit data.
Difference between circuit-switching
and packet-switching network

GSM Architecture
• A cell is formed by the radio
area coverage of a base
transceiver station (BTS).
One base station controller
(BSC) together controls
several BTSs.
• The combined traffic of the
mobile stations in their
respective cells is routed
through a switch i.e. the
mobile switching center
(MSC).
Continued….
• GSM networks are structured
hierarchically. They consist of
at least one administrative
region, which is assigned to a
MSC.
• For all users registered with a
network operator, permanent
data (such as the user's profile)
as well as temporary data
(such as the user's current
location) are stored in the
home location register(HLR).
• In case of a call to a user, the
HLR is always first queried, to
determine the user's current
location.
Moving On….
• A Visited location register(VLR) is responsible for a group
of location areas and stores the data of those users who are
currently in its area of responsibility.
• The AUC generates and stores security-related data such as
keys used for authentication and encryption, whereas the
EIR registers equipment data rather than subscriber data.
• The International Mobile Station Equipment Identity (IMEI)
uniquely identifies a mobile station internationally. It is a
kind of serial number.
• It can be viewed by typing *#06# on your mobile.
• It is allocated by the equipment manufacturer which is later
on stored in the equipment identity register(EIR).
Location management
• The main task of location
management is to keep track of the
user's current location, so that
incoming packet can be routed to his
or her mobile.
• The mobile frequently sends the user
location.
• In IDLE state the mobile is not
reachable. Performing a GPRS attach,
the mobile gets into READY state.
• The STANDBY state will be reached
when an MS does not send any
packets for a longer period of time,
and therefore the READY timer
(which was started at GPRS attach)
expires.
In the same vein ….
• In IDLE State, no location updating
is performed, i.e., the current
location of the mobile is unknown
to the network.

• For the location management of an

mobile in STANDBY State, a
GSM location area (LA) is divided
into several routing areas (RA).

• Whenever an mobile moves to a

new RA, it sends a "routing area
update request" to its assigned
SGSN.
Features of GPRS :

• Internet on the Mobile.

• Rich Media Applications.

• Speed of data transfer is achieved.

• Facilitates instant connection for sending and receiving of urgent

data.

• Spectrum efficiency.
Capability classes
There a 3 capability classes in GPRS :

• Class A : Can be connected to GPRS service and GSM

service (voice, SMS), using both at the same time.

• Class B : Can be connected to GPRS service and GSM

service (voice, SMS), but using only one or the other at a
given time. Most GPRS mobiles used today are Class B
devices.

• Class C : These devices are connected to either GPRS

service or GSM service (voice, SMS) require manual
between one or the other service.
Advantages of GPRS
• 3 TO 10 TIMES THE SPEED .

• INSTANT CONNECTIONS – IMMEDIATE TRANSFER

OF DATA.

• NEW AND BETTER APPLICATIONS.

• INCREASED MOBILITY FOR THE USERS.

• BILLING IS DONE AS PER THE DATA TRANSMITTED

BY THE USER AND NOT FOR THE DURATION FOR
WHICH THE USER HAS LOGGED IN.
Shortcomings
• LIMITED RADIO RESOURCES .

• SPEEDS ARE MUCH LOWER IN REALITY.

• NO SUPPORT OF MOBILE TERMINATED CALLS .

• TRANSIT DELAYS.

• NO STORE AND FORWARD FACILITY UNLIKE IN

GSM COMMUNICATION.
Proposed Solution
GPRS is a step in front of high-speed
circuit-switched data and steps closer to 3G.
It will help increase data transmission
speeds. So the shortcomings can be
overcome by technological upgradation i.e.
by upgrading to an EDGE(Enhanced Data
Rates for GSM Evolution) network.
Applications
• Information on demand regarding
weather, traffic, entertainment, stock
exchange, flight schedule etc.
• Bank transactions
• Tracking of taxis and credit card
validation for customer payment
• Support of security and monitoring
systems
A Parting Note
Although there may be some
shortcomings in GPRS but it is in its still
nascent stage but technological
advancements are taking place by the light
of the day. Our focus should be on how
efficiently and economically we can use this
technology because only then can we make
it a truly happening technology.
Thank you.
