Diesel engine power plant

 Introduction:- Diesel engine power plants are installed where supply of coal
and water is not available in sufficient quantity or where power is to be
generated in a small quantity.
 Where is stand by sets are required for continue tea of supplies such as in
hospital, telephone, exchange, radio stations.
 The diesel unit used for electric generation are more reliable and long lived
piece of equipment compared with other types of plant.
 If diesel plants are compare with other heat engine is of same size then diesel
price will be more efficient
Advantages of diesel engine
 It occupies less space
 The design of diesel engine and installation are very simple
 In diesel engine power plant the standby losses are very
less
 Overall capital cost in diesel power plant is lesser than that
of steam plant
 Dieselengine power plant can respond to varying without
any difficulties
Disadvantages of diesel engine

 The cost of operation in diesel engine is high

 The diesel engine required High maintenance and
lubrication cost
 Diesel units capacity is limited these cannot be
constructed in large size
 Diesel Power plant are not economical
Types of diesel engine

2 stroke diesel engine

4 stroke diesel engine
Two stroke
diesel Engine
 In are 2 stroke diesel engine the working cycle is
completed into stroke of the piston or one
revolution of crankshaft, whereas in a four stroke
engine, it is completed in 4/2 revolution of the
crankshaft .
 In a two stroke diesel engine the intake and
compression process are completed during inward
stroke and expansion and exhaust process during
the outward stroke.
Four stroke Diesel engine
 In a four stroke diesel engine is economical on lubricating
oil and fuel consumption.
 the engine cooling is simple and better as more time is
available for the removal of heat and the consumption
gases can be completely clear from the cylinder to make
the engine more compact the cylinders may be arranged
in the V- shape.
 In our four stroke cycle there are two in and two Out
motion
 In this cycle to revolution of the crankshaft per cycle
however only one of these 4 stroke is a power stroke.
 hence there is only one power stroke for two rotation of
the crankshaft.
Gas turbine power plant

 Introduction
 The inherent disadvantage of reciprocating I C engine is dealing with large
quantity of fluid and their larger weight to power ratio has led to the
development as gas turbine.
 The concept of first gas turbine power plant was known way back in 1872
when stroke in Berlin designed and built designed and built the first gas
turbine.
 In a gas turbine unit of compressor, combustor and the gas turbine must be
considered as a single unit for consideration of an efficient & economical
unit.
Layout of gas turbine plant

 The layout of a gas turbine plant exercise is a very

important effect on overall performance of the plant
 As it is possible to in cure or loss of extent of 20% of the
power developed in the in interconnected ducts having a
considerable number of sharp bends
 Therefore care should be taken in the design and layout
of the air as well as gas circuits
Working principle of gas turbine

 In gas turbine power plant the prime mover is a gas turbine and working
medium is Gas.The air is Compressed in a compressor.
 The main components of Gas turbine power plant is listed below
 gas turbine
 starting device
 Fuel control system
 combustor
 Reheater
 Regenerator
 Oil cooler
Classification of gas turbine

 Closed cycle gas turbine

 Open cycle gas turbine
Closed cycle
gas turbine
 In a closed cycle gas turbine plant, the fuel is
mixed air in the combustor gases are expanded in
gas turbine.
 The hot gases cause erosion and corrosion of
turbine blades.
 To minimise these superior quality of fuel has to be
used in combustion chamber.
Open cycle
gas turbine
 The arrangement that has proved most successful
in the continuous combustion or constant pressure
gas turbine which is described as follow
 a simple open cycle gas turbine plant consist of
the turbine it self, a compressor mounted on the
shaft or coupled to the turbine
 the combustor and auxiliaries ,such as starting
device, auxiliary lubrication system, fuel system,
the dust system etc
 A modified plant may have the addition to the
above.
Accessories of gas turbine

 Intercooler
 Heat exchanger
 Reheater
Application of gas turbine plant

 To drive generators and supply peak loads in steam diesel or hydro plants.
 To work as combination plants with conventional steam boiler.
 To supply mechanical drive for auxiliaries
