COMPUTER ETHICS

DEFINITION
Ethics are the moral rules, standard or principles
of behavior for deciding what is wrong or right.
Computer ethics on the other hand are the
rules, standard and guidelines that are adopted
and practice by computer professionals.
COMMON COMPUTER ETHICS
Computer ethics can be categorized as safety ethics,
maintenance ethics, environmental ethics and moral ethics
1. SAFETY ETHICS: This relate to all caution taken by the user to
avoid danger or harm. Safety ethics include the following;
a. fire extinguisher should be provider to handle fire outbreak
b. cables and electrical wires should be neatly managed to avoid
electrical hazard
c. Fire alarm should be provided to alert users before any fire
outbreak spread and damage expensive equipment.

d. Voltage stabilizer should be used to control the voltage of the


electric current

e. The furniture should be properly arranged to avoid accidents

2. MAINTENANCE ETHICS: this relate to all measures put
in place to ensure the good condition and long span of
the computer system. They include the following;
a. uninterrupted power supply (UPS) should be
provided to ensure continuous supply of power so that
computer can be properly shut down.

b. The computer room should be dust free to avoid the


system from being damaged.

c. The computer should be checked and serviced


periodically as part of a good maintenance culture.

3. ENVIRONMENTAL ETHICS: This relate to all


issues in respect to the safety of the
environment and they include:
a. The computer room should be located in a
convenient place.
b. Installation of Air Condition to keep the
temperature of the room cool as computer
generate a lot of heat
c. Computer should be kept neat at all times

4. MORAL ETHICS: they are moral issues relating to
person using the computer. E.g
a. Students should avoid fighting in the computer
laboratory
b. Student should avoid playing with the computer as
they are not toy
c. Students should strictly adhere to instruction given to
them by the teacher
d. Students should avoid over crowding the computer
room
RESPONSIBLE USE OF THE COMPUTER
SYSTEM
Computer users should take the following
precautions in using the computer system.
1. Obey rules and regulation
2. Avoid liquid dropping into the system
3. Use of dust covers
4. Protect the system from power problems
5. Unplug the system when not in use
RESPONSIBLE USE OF THE INTERNET

• User should check their email on a regular


basis
• Give prompt and polite response to email
• Avoid going to dangerous and prohibited site
