POWER COMPONENTS CALCULATION AND
POWER QUALITY FOR NONLINEAR LOADS:
A nonlinear load connected to the utility grid is a load that apart from its linear or passive
elements (inductors, resistors, capacitors) includes also nonlinear elements, such as power
semiconductor devices (e.g., diodes, thyristors, metal oxide semiconductor field effect
transistors, insulated gate bipolar transistors, etc.). For example, a diode rectifier with R-L
load is considered to be a nonlinear load to the power utility grid because of the presence of
diodes, which are nonlinear elements.

SINGLE-PHASE FULL-BRIDGE DIODE
RECTIFIER•
The diodes D1 and D4 during the 1st half-cycle are forward
biased and during the 2nd half-cycle the diodes D2 and D3.
• The pair of diodes D1 and D4 is conducting during the first
half-cycle and the pair D2 and D3 during the second half-
cycle.

MULTI-PHASE HALF-WAVE DIODE
RECTIFIER• As can be seen for the power circuit of the multiphase half-wave
or the so-called common-point rectifier, every input ac source
there is one diode.
• At any instant the diode with the highest positive anode voltage is
conducting and at the same time is forcing the rest to be reverse
biased.
• If the rectifier is supplied by k number of phases, then the output
voltage for each operation cycle consists of k number of pulses.
• When the number of phases is increased, the number of pulses is
also increased, while the output voltage ripple is decreased. An
output filter is applied to reduce the output voltage ripple, its size
and cost will be reduced when the number of input ac sources
increases.
• However, increasing the number of ac sources the number of
diodes increases, increasing the cost and the complexity of the
rectifier.
