SCOPE OF MICROBIOLOGY
Microbiology is one of the most applied of all the
biological sciences which did not exist as a true science
before the later part of 19th century.
The influence of microorganisms in human life is both beneficial
as well as detrimental also. For example microorganisms are
required for the production of bread, cheese, yoghurt,
antibiotics, enzymes, vaccines and many more important products.
Because of their beneficial and harmful role the scope of
microbiology thus becomes vast Including Food microbiology, Dairy,
Pharmaceutical, Genetic engineering, public health, Agricultural
and Environmental Microbiology.
FOOD MICROBIOLOGY

Food Microbiology studies the role of

microorganisms in foods as well as the use of
microorganisms for the production of
ingredients and foods. Its aim is to examine the
importance of microbes in food, their role
in spoilage of foods, and their application in
food production and safety.
FERMENTED FOOD PRODUCTS
FERMENTED MILKS
• At least 400 different fermented milks are produced around
the world. The majority of fermented milk products rely on
Lactic acid bacteria.
• Some examples are
• Butter milk, made with Lactococcus species
• Yogurt, made with streptococcus thermophilus
• Kefir, made from Lab. Kefir.
• These fermented milk products boosts our immunity, aid in
digestive problems, improves bone health, and may even
combat cancer.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF MILK PRODUCTS
1. BUTTER MILK
2. CHEESE
3. YOGURT
4. KEFIR
5. PANEER
6. CURD (DAHI)
PUBLIC HEALTH MICROBIOLOGY
• Public health is the science of protecting populations and
improvement the health of human communities through
education, promotion of of healthy lifestyles, and
prevention of diseases.
• Public health practitioners use a methodical approach to
identify population health issues to prevent negative
outcomes.
• Three step measures to control infection:
• The first one is eliminating the source of infection ( by social
distancing or isolation of carriers)
• Second step include sanitization measures like chlorination
• The third step includes herd immunization to give temporary
immunity.
ROLE OF MICROBIOGY IN
GENETIC ENGINEERING
• The delibrate modification of an organism’s gentic information
by directly changing its nucleic acid genome is called genetic
engineering and is achieved by a group of methods known as
Recombinant DNA Technology.
• It may also mean extracting DNA from another organism’s
genome and combining it with the DNA of other individual.
• A gene is too small to be inserted with some kind of
Microsurgery.
• Therefore some carries (vectors) is required which takes the
gene into the recepient cell and somehow get it inserted into the
DNA of the reccepient.
REASON MICROBES ARE USED FOR
GENETIC ENGINEERING
• Bacteria are unicellular.
• Bacteria has plasmids and these plasmid has
marking gene.
• Reproduce asexually with rapid multiplication
ability.
• Having higher metabolism than other organisms
• Some of them are resistant to antibiotics.
• Examples – Agrobacterium and E.coli are used as
vector
• The genetically modified insulin, ‘HUMULIN’ was licensed for
human use in 1982.
AGRICULTURAL MICROBIOLOGY

• Agriculture microbiology is a field of concerned

with plant-associated microbes.
• It also deals with the microbiology of soil fertility,
such as microbial degradation of organic matter
and soil nutrient transformation.
• Due to presence of wide vaiety of microbes in soil
they help to increase fertility of soil and there by
enhance the agricultural productivity.
Kluyvera ascorbata
• A plant growth promoting bacterium, Kluyvera
ascorbata SUD165 that contained high level of
heavy metals were isolated from soil near Sandbury,
Ontario, Canada. The bacterium was resistant to
the toxic effects of Ni2+, Pb2+, Zn+ and Cro4- .
• Canola seeds inoculated with this bacterium and
grown under genbiotic conditions in presence of
high concentration of Nickel chloride were partially
protected against Nickel toxicity.
