Basic Calculus Week 1

This document provides an overview of basic calculus concepts including limits of functions, theorems on limits, and techniques for evaluating limits. It defines a limit as the intended height of a function and describes how limits describe a function's behavior at a specific x-value. The document presents examples of using tables of values, limit theorems, factoring, rationalizing, and multiplying common denominators to evaluate limits. It concludes with an assignment on using these techniques to find limits and an overview of the next topic which is derivatives and differentiation rules.

Theorems on Limits
Limits
 are the backbone of Calculus
 the concept of limit is the fundamental foundation of
Calculus
Calculus
 is called the Mathematics of Change
The limit of a function
 it is the intended height of a function
 it describes the behavior of a function at a specific
value of x
This is how the limit functions
 Imagine that you are going to watch a
basketball game. When you chooseseats, you
would want to be as close to the action as
possible. You would want to be as close to the
players as possible and have the best view of
the game, as if you were in the basketball court
yourself. Take note that you cannot actually be
in the court and join the players, but you will
be close enough to describe clearly what is
happening in the game.
Limit of a Function

 read as “The limit of a function f(x) as x

approaches c is equal to L”
 f(x) represents any given functions
 c is any value or constant
 L is the limit, the answer
Using the table of values: Investigate the ff limits.
1.
Solution: approaching 2 from the left (x-)
Solution: approaching 2 from the right (x+)

The table shows that as x approaches 2, f(x) approaches 7

=7 Ans.
Using the table of values:
Investigate the ff limits.
2.
Solution: approaching 1 from the left (x-)
Solution: approaching 1 from the right (x+)

The table shows that as x approaches 1, f(x) approaches -3

= -3
Using the table of values: Investigate the ff limits.
3.

Solution: approaching 4 from the left, we will use x + 1

Solution: approaching 4 from the right, use (x - 4)2 + 3

The values that f(x) approaches are not equal, f(x) approaches
5 from the left while it approaches 3 from the right.
