DEVELOPMENT
“SELF-CONCEPT”
SELF
*Intangible entity that directs a person’s thoughts and
actions
*The outside physical realm of the person
*cognitive and affective representation of one’s
identity
*Human characteristics such as behaviour and thought
IDEAL SELF
Self that you aspire to be
The one that you hope will possess characteristics
similar to a mentor or some other worldly figure
ACTUAL SELF
The one that you actually
see
It is the self that has
characteristics that you were
nurtured or born to have
ACTUAL SELF AND IDEAL SELF
broad categories of self-
concept
SELF-CONCEPT
refers to your awareness of your
self
It is the construct that negotiates
these two selves
Connotes first the identification of
the ideal self as separate from other,
second, it encompasses all the
behaviours evaluated in the actual
self that you engaged in to reach the
ideal self
ACTUAL- SELF
BUILT ON SELF-KNOWLEDGE
Who we actually are
How we think, feel, look and act
Can be seen by others
SELF-KNOWLEDGE
DERIVED FROM social interactions
that provide insight into how
others react to you.
SELF-IMAGE
actual image
Actual self can be seen by
others, but because we have
no way of truly knowing
others view us
IDEAL-SELF
how we want to be
Idealized image that we have
developed over time based on what
we have learned and experienced.
Components of what our parents
taught us, what we admire in others,
society promotes and what we think
in our best interest.
NEGOTIATION
exist between the two
selves which is complex
because there are
numerous exchanges
between the ideal and
actual self
SOCIAL ROLES
derived from outcomes
of social interactions from
infant to adult
development.
There should be alignment between the
actual self and ideal self resulting to
sense of mental well-being or peace of
mind
INCONGRUENCE
Lack of alignment
the way that I am (Actual self) and the
way I want to be (ideal self) is not
aligned will result mental distress or
anxiety
The greater the level of
incongruence between
the ideal self and real
self, the greater the
level of resulting
distress.
