WEEK 2
NETWORK CALCULATIONS USING ADMITTANCE
MODEL

Why admittance/impedance model ??
• The first step in developing the mathematical model describing the power
flow in the network is the formulation of the bus admittance/impedance
matrix.

The nodal method is the standard approach for power flow calculations for several reasons:

1) Busbars in the system can be easily translated into nodes,

2) the admittance matrix (without mutual couplings) can be built from inspection
3) the nodal method can exploit the sparsity of the admittance matrix.

Since in a power network each bus is connected only to a few other buses (two or three), the
Y bus of a large network is very sparse ,i.e, it has a large number of zeroes. The Y bus is
often used in solving load flow problems. It has gained widespread applications due to its
simplicity in data preparation, ease of formation and modification for network changes. Due
to its sparsity it heavily reduces computer memory and time requirements.

2.1 Node Equations:
The junction formed when 2 circuit elements or an ideal source
are connected to each other at their terminals called “NODES”.
At Node 1: (V1- V3) Yc + (V1- V2) Yd + (V1- V4) Yf = 0
At Node 3: V3 Ya + (V3- V2) Yb + (V3- V1) Yc = I3

15
At Node 1: (V1- V3) Yc + (V1- V2) Yd + (V1- V4) Yf = 0

At Node 3: V3 Ya + (V3- V2) Yb + (V3- V1) Yc = I3

Rearranging:
At 1 V1 (Yc+Yd+Yf) – V2 Yd – V3 Yc –V4 Yf = 0

At 3 -V1 (Yc) – V2 Yb + V3 (Ya +Yb + Yc ) =

See how to formulate node equations !

Write the equations for Nodes 2 & 4.
4 Equations can now be written in Matrix form.

16
The diagonal admittances are called the self-admittances , and the off-
diagonal admittances are the mutual admittances of the nodes.
Also called driving-point and transfer admittances of the nodes.
Ybus is called Bus admittance matrix .
Zbus = (Ybus )-1 is called Bus Impedance Matrix.
