How do we form the simple past tense . . .?

English has two types of


verbs in the past tense:  taught
 walked
 Regular verbs  studied
 Irregular verbs  gave
Look at the following  became

For regular verbs, simply use the –ed form of the
verb in a positive sentence.

For irregular verbs, use the correct past tense
form in positive sentences. (We use the same form with different
subjects .)

Last week, I ___________ you a letter. (send)

The students __________an English exam. (have)

For negative sentences, USE

I went to work yesterday.


I didn’t go to work yesterday.
Exception =
VERB BE!
The verb be is special.
Never use DID NOT or DIDN’T with the
verb BE. Instead, just use:
For Yes/No questions, USE

Did you go to work yesterday?


Did you come yesterday?
Put the verbs (between brackets) into the correct
form (simple past).

Last year, I (spend) ________my holiday in Ireland.


It (be) ________great. I (travel)___________ around
the city by car with two friends and we (visit)
________lots of interesting places. In the evenings,
we usually (go)_______ to a café.
We (be) ________very lucky with the weather. It
(not / rain)___________ a lot. We(see)

 She is at the park now.

(+) - She was at the park yesterday.


(-) - She wasn’t at the park yesterday.
(?) - Was she at the park yesterday?

 She goes to the hospital to visit her friend.

(+) - She went to the hospital to visit


her friend last week.
(-) - She didn’t go to the hospital to
visit her friend last week.
(?) - Did she go to the hospital to visit
her friend last week?
 When and while at the front of a sentence - use a comma:

When you called, I was watching TV.


While he was washing the clothes, I was doing the dishes.

 When and while in the middle of a sentence - no comma


I was watching TV when you called.
I was doing the dishes while he was washing the clothes.

Remember:
We DON’T use verbs that describe states (e.g. believe, like, love, prefer)
with a continuous tense.
Affirmative sentences:
I/he/she/it was playing football.
We/you/they were playing football.

NOTE: Use was with (I, he, she, it) and were with all other pronouns.
In affirmative sentences we do not use short forms in the past continuous.

Negative sentences:
I/he/she/it was not (wasn’t) playing football.
We/you/they were not (weren’t) playing football.

Questions:
We put the auxiliary (was or were) before the subject
Was I/he/she/it playing football?
Were we/you/they playing football?
