OVERVIEW :
-Lead is the most important toxic heavy element
in the environment.
-Lead poisoning occurs when lead builds up in the
body, often over months or years.
Even small amounts of lead can cause serious
health problems.
Children younger than 6 years are especially
vulnerable to lead poisoning, which can severely
affect mental and physical development.
At very high levels, lead poisoning can be fatal.
SOURCE OF TOXICITY :
Sources of Lead toxicity :
1-Lead-Based Paint
2-Contaminated soil
3-Children's Toys and Jewelry
4-Drinking Water
5-Workplace and Hobby Hazards
6-Cosmetics
7- Pottery and ceramic dishes
SYMPTOMS OF TOXICITY :
 Initially, lead Poisining can be hard to
detect even people who seem healthy can
have high blood levels of lead.
 Signs and symptoms usually don't appear
until dangerous amounts have
accumulated.
Signs and symptoms of lead
poisoning in children include:
1-Learning difficulties
2-Irritability
3-Loss of appetite
4-Weight loss
5- fatigue
6-Abdominal pain
7-Vomiting
8-Constipation
9-Hearing loss
10-seizures
Signs and symptoms in adults might
include:
1-High blood pressure
2-Joint and muscle pain
3-Difficulties with memory or concentration
4-Headache
5-Abdominal pain
6-Mood disorders
7-Reduced sperm count and abnormal sperm
8-Miscarriage, stillbirth or premature birth in
pregnant women
MANAGEMENT OF TOXICITY :
A- Dietary management :
1-Antioxidants 2-Vitamins
B- chelation therapy : is recommended for
children only in cases where blood lead levels are
45 μg/dL or greater.
The drugs used as chelating agents for lead include
DiMercaptoSuccinicAcid (DMSA),
DiMercaptoPropaneSulfonate (DMPS),
Dimercaprol, Penicillamine, and
CalciumDisodiumEthyleneDiamineTetraaceticAci
d (CaNa2EDTA)
PREVENTION OF TOXICITY :
Centers of disease control(CDC) supports
primary and secondary lead exposure
prevention:
1-Primary prevention : is the removal of lead
hazards from the environment before a child is
lead exposed.
2-Secondary prevention : blood lead testing and
follow-up care and referral.
