    Apollo 13 was a 1970 Apollo space mission that suffered a critical failure but was successfully able to return the crew safely to Earth. The crew of Fred Haise, Jack Swigert, and Jim Lovell launched on April 11, 1970 but on April 13th an oxygen tank exploded, crippling the spacecraft. The crew had to take refuge in the lunar module and make an emergency return with assistance from Mission Control. They splashed down safely on April 17th, in what became known as a "successful failure."
