Lesson 3 Operation On Functions

1) The document discusses operations that can be performed on functions, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of functions. 2) Examples are provided to demonstrate how to calculate the sum, difference, product, and quotient of two functions f(x) and g(x). 3) The key operations are: (f + g)(x) = f(x) + g(x), (f - g)(x) = f(x) - g(x), (f ● g)(x) = f(x) ● g(x), and (f/g)(x) = f(x) / g(x) where g(x) ≠

OPERATIONS
OF
FUNCTION
REVIEW: WHAT IS A
FUNCTION?

• A relationship where every domain

(x value has exactly one unique
range (y value).
• Sometimes we talk about a
FUNCTION MACHINE, where a
rule is applied to each input of x
FUNCTION OPERATIONS
Addition :  f  g ( x)  f x   g x 
Subtractio n :  f  g x   f x   g x 
Multiplica tion :  f  g x   f x  g x 
f f x 
Division :  x   where gx   0
g g x 
Example 1: Given: f(x) = 3x – 5 and
g(x) = x + 2, find the following.
a. (f + g) (x) b. (f - g) (x)
= f(x) + g(x) = f(x) - g(x)
= (3x – 5) + (x + 2) = (3x – 5) - (x + 2)
= 3x – 5 + x + 2 = 3x – 5 - x - 2
= 4x - 3 = 2x - 7
f(x) + g(x) = 4x - 3 f(x) - g(x) = 2x - 7
Example 1: Given: f(x) = 3x – 5 and
g(x) = x + 2, find the following.
c. (f ● g) (x) d. (f/g)(x)
= f(x) ● g(x) =
= (3x – 5)(x + 2) =
= + 6x - 5x - 10
= + x - 10 𝑓 ( 𝑥) 3 𝑥 −5

𝑔 ( 𝑥) 𝑥 +2
f(x) ● g(x) =
Example 2: Given: f(x) = 6x + 1 and
g(x) = 5x - 4, find the following.
a. (f + g) (x) b. (f - g) (x)
= f(x) + g(x) = f(x) - g(x)
= (6x + 1) + (5x - 4) = (6x + 1) - (5x - 4)
= 6x + 1 + 5x - 4 = 6x + 1 - 5x + 4
= 11x - 3 =x +5
f(x) + g(x) = 11x - 3 f(x) - g(x) = x + 5
Example 2: Given: f(x) = 6x + 1 and
g(x) = 5x - 4, find the following.
c. (f ● g) (x) d. (f/g)(x)
= f(x) ● g(x) =
= (6x + 1)(5x - 4) =
= - 24x + 5x - 4
= - 19 x - 4 𝑓 ( 𝑥) 6 𝑥+1
=
𝑔 ( 𝑥) 5 𝑥 − 4
f(x) ● g(x) = 4
Example 3: Given: f(x) = and
g(x) = x - 9, find the following.
a. (f + g) (x) b. (f - g) (x)
= f(x) + g(x) = f(x) - g(x)
= ( ) + (x - 9) = ( ) - (x - 9 )
= +x-9 = -x +9
=+x -6 =x + 12
f(x) + g(x) = + x - 6 f(x) - g(x) = x + 12
Example 3: Given: f(x) = and
g(x) = x - 9, find the following.
c. (f ● g) (x) d. (f/g)(x)
= f(x) ● g(x) =
= ( )(x - 9) =
