Lamb Wave Analysis using ABAQUS

Elastic Wave

• Elastic wave propagation is dependent on

the density and elastic modulus of a
medium

• Longitudinal and Transverse wave speed is

depends on Young’s and Shear Modulus,
respectively

Plate Geometry

Symmetric vs Anti-symmetric mode

• Typically, Symmetric and Anti-symmetric

wave generated simultaneously for general
elastic medium. Since, existence of many
modes in the response makes analysis
difficult., isolating So and Ao from other
modes(S1, A1, S2…..) is recommended. To-do
is frequency-thickness product(fd) needs to
be less 2.0MHz.

• S0 mode is the fastest wave as shown in

velocity dispersion curve, it typically used as
signal for health monitoring

Determining element edge length

• In order to capture propagating wave, at For isotropic,

least 5~10 element per wavelength is G=
adequate

• To decide proper element size, 1st step is to

calculate transverse wave speed
• We used 10mm thick sheet, fd=2MHz,
 Ct = 3052m/s therefore, max frequency is 0.2Hz

• Minimum smallest wavelength is calculated;

Material STS321

Min wavelength =
15 mm
* therefore, typical min element size would be
1.5~3 mm

Determining step size
· If you want make lower
• adequate integration time step is important for accuracy. frequency which can
travel longer, it needs
• typically 20 points / cycle of the highest frequency results is reasonable. high magnitude to avoid
elastic wave
• Deciding time step needs two criteria 1] Courant, Fredrichs, Lewy criterion
attenuation. If media is
2] Moser criterion embedded in soil, the
various materials in soil
which contacted
to steel sheet could
interfere the wave
propagation, resulted in
more signal attenuation.
 Select 10kHz excitation for following Therefore, frequency
Analysis - element size is around 10mm
and magnitude for
- increment step size is 1e-6 sec* Too small element size give an error
excitation signal needs to
be carefully considered.

Application of Lamb Wave in SHM(structural health monitoring)

• SHM system involving Lamb wave can be differentiated into two type, Passive/Active system

• In Active system, Lamb wave are excited into structures using actuators and then sensed back by sensors with
damage information
* exciter: Ultrasonic transducers, Laser Transducers, Piezoelectric transducers, Optical fiber trd

Simulation of Lamb Wave

• Application of Lamb wave in real world have severe complexity.

• Thus, Numerical simulation is one of the best way to understand Lamb wave behaviour.

• Check the elastic wave propagation pattern with

excitation frequency and step time.

• Experiment with the step size and frequency in the

Abaqus model and review the wave propagation
pattern.

• Collect Data on for different Frequencies and Different Form of Defects like for
different point loads applied, different locations, etc.

• Use Machine Learning methods to train collected Data to make prediction for
