Introduction
• Newborn refers to an infant who is within hours, days, or up to a few
weeks from birth, or it refers to an infant in the first 28 days of life, The
day of birth is the riskiest time to a baby. Newborn immediate care is the
care given to the neonate after birth by qualified personnel in the
delivery room according to the World Health Organization (WHO) report
on 2015, globally 2.7 million neonates die in the first 28 days which
constitutes 45% of the under-five mortality and nearly 58% of infant
mortality. Essential care of the normal newborn with the aim of
preventing illnesses, providing extra care for low birth weight babies and
quality emergency care for the sick newborn.
• The care present during birth, whether at home
or in medical facilities, is crucial to a newborn's
health. For a newborn to survive, it must
receive care and treatment from medical
professionals soon after birth and during the
early and late neonatal stages.
• Ensuring that neonates receive proper care
from birth requires the active participation and
involvement of all members of the health team,
especially midwives.
• Simple, low-cost measures like early, exclusive
breastfeeding and clean cord care help avoid
infection and support healthy growth in
children, respectively. However, a number of
issues, such as a lack of sufficient knowledge
and sociocultural, economic, and demographic
factors that affect mothers and carers, may
prevent babies from receiving the care they
require.
• A descriptive case series study was conducted during 2015 in
Benghazi paediatric hospital , in the study out of 1610 neonatal
admissions reviewed, the total number of deaths was 122 during
2015. Approximately 52 % of neonatal deaths in one day were of
newborns <1 week old, and 54% were full-term newborns.

• The most frequent direct single cause of death in neonates was

prematurity, then neonatal sepsis and congenital heart disease
respectively.
Literature review
• In April 2018 cross sectional study was employed on 357 nurses and midwives
in northeast Ethiopia, Overall, 53.8% and 62.7% of the health professionals
(midwives and nurses) had adequate knowledge and good practice on
immediate newborn care

• A hospital based analytical cross sectional study included 246 nurses and
midwives was conducted in Zanzibar from January to fabruary 2021. Among 246,
89(36.2%) and 66(26.8%) had adequate knoweldge and appropriate skills of
ENC.

• A cross-sectional descriptive survey design was conducted in Four hospitals that

provide inpatient maternity services in Tamale, Ghana in December 2018 using
an electronic survey questionnaire , About 98% of midwives were female. The
mean age of midwives was 31.87 years. The percentage of midwives who
responded correctly to questions on newborn care and management of
postpartum complications ranged from 29.80% to 89.39%
