2019 CIF LOS ANGELES CITY SECTION HALL OF FAME CLASS
On behalf of the Los Angeles City Section Board of Managers and member schools, it brings me
great honor to welcome all the inductees, their family members, friends, public officials, Section
dignitaries, fans and guests, to the induction ceremony for the CIF Los Angeles City Section Hall of
Fame Class of 2019. The LA City Section introduced the inaugural Hall of Fame Class in 2011, and
has since selected inductees every two years. The Class of 2019 is the fifth class to be inducted into
a very select group of athletes, coaches, Section administrators, sports writers, and other significant
contributors to the high school athletics scene. Interscholastic athletics have been played in Los
Angeles high schools for more than 100 years during which time many have gone on to gain world
notoriety in their sport or sports field, and some have distinguished themselves as high school,
college, Olympian or professional legends.
Today, we recognize and honor but a few of the many who have displayed greatness in the high
school athletic arena, either as an athlete, coach, administrator, media or supporting role. For their
efforts and commitment, we shall honor their legacy and memorialize their talents by their induction
today into the CIF Los Angeles City Section Hall of Fame, Class of 2019.
A sampling of the HOF Class of 2019 includes Willie Crawford, former LA Dodger; Anthony Davis, USC
and professional football player; Julie Rousseau, former Washington High School basketball coach;
Chris Ferragamo, former Banning High School football coach and his brother Vince Ferragamo,
former Los Angeles Rams quarterback; Freeman McNeil, UCLA and professional football player; Jim
Tunney, known as the β€œDean of NFL Referees;” Sue Kamiyama, LAUSD and CIF Athletic Administrator
instrumental in the development of girls sports in California; Marv Dunphy, volleyball coaching
legend; John Smith, former UCLA track star and Olympian; and Loree Moore, former WNBA player.
Leading our Legacy group of inductees is Louis Zamperini, Olympian distance runner and World War
II hero. The broadcast and print media are represented by the induction of Randy Rosenbloom and
Eric Sondheimer as significant contributors to high school sports. The CIF Los Angeles City Section
takes great pleasure in recognizing the 20 current Hall of Fame inductees and the 11 Legacy Hall of
Fame inductees who have passed on their greatness to the youth of today.
We wish to thank the Hall of Fame Committee members: Chairperson Dick Dornan, Barbara Fiege,
Richard Obrand, Rick Prizant, Dr. Willard Love, Trent Cornelius, David Siedelman, Bud Kling, Vicky

distinctive golden voice of Randy. The former All-East Valley League shot

while coaching at Mary Star of the Sea and San Pedro. A San Pedro High
School alumnus of 1974, he would come back to his alma mater to take over the

Section titles and 21 league championships. The run from 2000-09 was Dobra’s
best as he guided San Pedro to a decade of dominance that would be tough to
duplicate. His team reached the City Section title game every year, winning nine
championships in 10 appearances. Dobra was named the 2009 Cal-Hi Sports
State Coach of the Year after his Pirates capped off the decade with his 13th
City title. One of just five coaches in state history with 700 wins or more (735 to

The LA City Section introduced the inaugural Hall of Fame Class in 2011, and has since selected inductees every two years. The Class of 2019 is the fifth class to be inducted into a very select group of athletes, coaches, Section administrators, sports writers, and other significant contributors to the high school athletics scene. Interscholastic athletics have been played in Los Angeles high schools for more than 100 years during which time many have gone on to gain world notoriety in their sport or sports field, and some have distinguished themselves as high school, college, Olympian or professional legends. Today, we recognize and honor but a few of the many who have displayed greatness in the high school athletic arena, either as an athlete, coach, administrator, media or supporting role. For their efforts and commitment, we shall honor their legacy and memorialize their talents by their induction today into the CIF Los Angeles City Section Hall of Fame, Class of 2019. A sampling of the HOF Class of 2019 includes Willie Crawford, former LA Dodger; Anthony Davis, USC and professional football player; Julie Rousseau, former Washington High School basketball coach; Chris Ferragamo, former Banning High School football coach and his brother Vince Ferragamo, former Los Angeles Rams quarterback; Freeman McNeil, UCLA and professional football player; Jim Tunney, known as the β€œDean of NFL Referees;” Sue Kamiyama, LAUSD and CIF Athletic Administrator instrumental in the development of girls sports in California; Marv Dunphy, volleyball coaching legend; John Smith, former UCLA track star and Olympian; and Loree Moore, former WNBA player. Leading our Legacy group of inductees is Louis Zamperini, Olympian distance runner and World War II hero. The broadcast and print media are represented by the induction of Randy Rosenbloom and Eric Sondheimer as significant contributors to high school sports. The CIF Los Angeles City Section takes great pleasure in recognizing the 20 current Hall of Fame inductees and the 11 Legacy Hall of Fame inductees who have passed on their greatness to the youth of today. We wish to thank the Hall of Fame Committee members: Chairperson Dick Dornan, Barbara Fiege, Richard Obrand, Rick Prizant, Dr. Willard Love, Trent Cornelius, David Siedelman, Bud Kling, Vicky Lagos, and John Aguirre for their outstanding efforts with the selection of all the nominees. Randy Rosenbloom North Hollywood 1969 The voice of the LA City Section. If you have ever watched a LA City Section championship event on television or on the internet, then you heard the distinctive golden voice of Randy. The former All-East Valley League shot putter at North Hollywood High School turned in his grunts for play-by-play calls after graduation in 1969. Randy has announced over 150 championship games on television in a variety of sports for the Section spanning three decades. His unique and distinguishable voice has been heard on Prime Ticket, Spectrum, Time Warner Cable, KCOP, KLCS, KDOC, L.A. 36 and the NFHS Network covering all of the exciting City Section action. • 7. HALL OF FAME INDUCTION CEREMONY APRIL 28, 2019 7 Eric Sondheimer Polytechnic 1976 Eric Sondheimer has been covering high school sports in Southern California since the day he graduated from Poly High in Sun Valley in 1976. A graduate of Cal State Northridge, he joined the Daily News as prep editor in 1980. He left for 18 months in 1990 to be West Coast correspondent for the National Sports Daily. He returned to the Daily News in 1981 and joined the Los Angeles Times in 1997 covering high school sports every step of the way. Eric has been honored six times by the California Prep Sportswriters Assn. for best prep sports column. His dedication and commitment to high school sports has provided our student-athletes, coaches and schools with tremendous exposure and visibility both in print and online. Eric was inducted into the Southern California Jewish Hall of Fame in 1991. He continues to be the premier high school sports journalist in the Los Angeles area. Jim Tunney LAUSD 1951-1975 Regarded as the β€œDean of NFL Referees,” Jim’s illustrious 31-year career in the National Football League has earned him a nomination to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. From 1960 to 1990, Jim received a record 29 post-season assignments, including 10 Championship games and Super Bowls VI, XI, and XII and was named as an alternate in Super Bowl XVIII. Tunney's trademark signal upon a successful field goal, or extra point, featured raising his arms with fists clenched, then opening both fists simultaneously to indicate the attempt as "good." Off the field, Tunney had a long career as an LAUSD educator and school administrator. He began as a teacher in 1951 at Lincoln High School, later becoming vice principal from 1959 to 1964. He then served as a principal of Fairfax (1964-1971), Franklin (1972-1973), and Hollywood (1973-1975). In 2011, Jim was inducted into the California Community Coaches Hall of Fame. COACHES Tony Dobra San Pedro 1974 For 35 years, Tony Dobra brought excellence and respect to the sport of softball while coaching at Mary Star of the Sea and San Pedro. A San Pedro High School alumnus of 1974, he would come back to his alma mater to take over the softball program in 1987, and from there, Pirate softball would skyrocket to stardom. During his 29 years at the helm, Tony led San Pedro to 13 LA City Section titles and 21 league championships. The run from 2000-09 was Dobra’s best as he guided San Pedro to a decade of dominance that would be tough to duplicate. His team reached the City Section title game every year, winning nine championships in 10 appearances. Dobra was named the 2009 Cal-Hi Sports State Coach of the Year after his Pirates capped off the decade with his 13th City title. One of just five coaches in state history with 700 wins or more (735 to be exact), Dobra officially retired last year after leading the Pirates to the Open Division championship game, his 18th finals appearance. Tony is also a member of the Los Angeles Sportswalk of Fame in San Pedro.
  • 8. HALL OF FAME INDUCTION CEREMONY APRIL 28, 2019 8 Marv Dunphy Taft 1966 Regarded as one of the greatest collegiate volleyball coaches to have ever graced the court, Marv Dunphy concluded his 34th and final season as the Pepperdine University head coach in 2016-17. An astonishing 22 Pepperdine Waves earned 38 All-American first-team accolades, and six of his players have earned National Player of the Year honors, more than any other program in the country. He has served in various other capacities with Team USA at the last six Olympic Games. A graduate of Taft High School in 1966, Dunphy is a member of the Volleyball Hall of Fame, the American Volleyball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, and the Pepperdine Hall of Fame. Chris Ferragamo Banning 1958 When one thinks of Banning football, the name Chris Ferragamo instantly comes to mind. Chris is one of the most celebrated coaches in L.A. City Section history having coached the Pilots to eight of their 11 City Section titles, winning six in a row from 1976-1981. He sported a sparkling record of 179-52-5 during his two stints as head coach that spanned 22 seasons. Some of his former star players included his brother, Vince, Freeman McNeil, Stanley Wilson, Jamelle Holieway and Michael Alo. Chris credits much of his success to his mentors, Coach Gene Vollnogle and Coach Paul Huebner, for inspiration and to close friend John Mendez for the development of youth football in the Wilmington community. Upon leaving Banning, Chris coached at New Mexico Highlands University as a volunteer assistant line coach. Paul Knox Hamilton 1970 Paul retired from the Los Angeles Unified School District in 2014 after 33 years. During his 27-year tenure as a coach at Dorsey High School, he won four LA City championships in football and four City titles in girls track.
