MW2011: Quigley, S., Integration of Print and Digital Publishing Workflows at...museums and the web
The Art Institute of Chicago has been publishing award-winning scholarly and popular print catalogues for decades… but is this model sustainable? Digital publication appears to hold great promise for both user experience and global reach. To achieve these bright outcomes, however, institutions need to approach the challenges and opportunities of digital publication with creativity, willingness to reorganize around new ideas and the careful and adequate resourcing of this vitally important publishing agenda.
In this paper, we will share the Art Institute of Chicago’s experiences gained from forging new integrated print and digital publishing workflows. The discussion will focus on case studies from our ongoing efforts on the Monet and Renoir Systematic Catalogue supported by the Getty’s Online Scholarly Catalogue Initiative (OSCI), the Martin European Decorative Arts Gallery Interactives, the French Impressionism iPhone, iPad and Android applications, and other publications. These projects have all required a deeper collaboration between the technology, publications, education, and marketing/ communications departments. We will discuss our approaches to challenges brought on by these digital publishing opportunities, such as: How do we address the impact these workflows have on both job responsibilities and available human resources? Does increasing the digital publishing portfolio imply decreasing the number of print catalogues planned? How can we incentivize scholars to write for digital publication? Will certain features, such as footnotes and citation tools, allow the field of art history to better recognize the legitimacy of these digital works? What content and which publication channels are appropriate for revenue generating goals? Is new hardware like the iPad creating a new generation of expectations for digital publication? How sustainable are these digital publications as software evolves—are we considering the ongoing maintenance costs?
The Continuing Evolution of DAMs in the Nonprofit Sector
Nonprofit organizations are driven by their missions and for many decades they have delivered on those missions effectively by using primarily manual processes.
However, the world has changed dramatically. The digital transformation of the past two decades has resulted in an entirely new set of opportunities as well as challenges. In today’s world, nonprofits achieve mission-focused success and competitive advantage by implementing and leveraging best practices with digital technologies.
Managing information and digital content is vital, leading to the embrace of powerful digital asset management tools and practices. Viewed from the perspective of 2018, there has been a remarkable evolution, as organizations have adapted and thrived (or not) in this new, technological ecosystem. This session will explore how nonprofit organizations have evolved as they continue to fulfill their important missions.
Using an interactive case study format to include multiple perspectives, panelists from different types and sizes of nonprofits will share their stories. We will examine the origins of adopting new tools such as DAMs, the challenges faced, and the evolution that has taken place in our sector. We will look at changes to strategy over time, and the different ways that organizational structures have shifted in response. Through open sharing and plenty of audience participation, attendees and presenters will learn from each other, gain practical knowledge, expand professional networks, and set the stage for continued success.

For many museums, undertaking digitization projects can be intimidating. What does it take to provide the widest possible access to works of art? This panel will discuss the conception, challenges, and outcomes of recent collections access initiatives at the Detroit Institute of Arts.
This document summarizes the journey of an impatient historian over time from 1984 to 2011. It discusses how in 1984, the historian had to follow strict rules to access archives and secrets, but by 2011, with new digital tools, the historian is able to hack, connect, and transform archives in new ways. The three wishes of the impatient historian are to let them play with data, connect different sources, and transform archives into new forms like stories and collaborations with others.
This document discusses the history and development of computing technologies in art museums from the 1960s to the present. It notes early proposals from the 1960s about using computers to access information about artworks across collections worldwide. Specific early digital projects aimed at cataloging and analyzing artworks are also mentioned from the 1960s and 1970s. The development of standards, databases, and the internet are then reviewed in transforming how art information is stored and accessed over subsequent decades to the present digital age.
The British Library Labs project encourages researchers and developers to use British Library digital collections and data for research and development. It does this through competitions, events like hackathons, and residencies where winners can work intensively with collections. The Labs project aims to support digital scholarship by providing tools, services, and case studies. It has highlighted projects like an interface for "mixing" collections based on a DJ model and a "sample generator" to search collections and provide randomized samples of works for research.

Beat Estermann presented on using Wikidata to establish an international database for performing arts. The goals are to make cultural heritage data openly accessible, interconnect collections worldwide through Wikidata, and provide a single source of data for popular websites and apps. Pilot projects ingest repertoire from theaters in Zurich and Flanders to develop the data model. Challenges include organizing relevant material and resolving data quality issues. There are opportunities for synergies between Wikidata, Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and other platforms to crowdsource maintenance and make performing arts information more visible internationally.
The future of cataloging needs to be understood through its past. This presentation describes cataloging and catalogs from the book and card catalog to the present. It highlights the problems that arise when working with data that was designed over 100 years ago for the card catalog. This data no longer meets the needs of users. No, no solutions are provided, but it suggests that there is an urgency in finding some.
Based on a review of the most successful international crowdsourcing projects, this talk will look at the attributes of successful crowdsourcing projects in cultural heritage, including interface and interaction design, participation in community discussion, and understanding participant motivations.

The document summarizes the Cleveland Museum of Art's journey towards digitization of its collection and use of digital technologies. It describes how the museum renovated galleries, digitized over 90% of its collection, and developed digital tools like the ArtLens app and ArtLens Gallery interactive space. Evaluation found those who used ArtLens technologies spent more time and engaged with more artworks. The museum now uses analytics to understand visitor flows and has launched an open API to make its collection publicly available for various uses.

This document summarizes research on using social tagging in museums to improve access to collections. It finds that tagging can provide useful metadata beyond what museums currently have. A system called Steve was developed to support tagging across multiple museums. Research found most tags were useful and different than traditional documentation. The document outlines ongoing research analyzing tag hierarchies and relationships to improve search and discovery of museum objects.
How We Used to Build the Future: 30 Years of Collection Development TrendsNASIG
In light of the 30th anniversary of NASIG, and the shift from print to electronic serials collections, a panel of librarians will take a historic look back at collection development trends and practices. What did our collections look like in the late 1980s? How did the online evaluation tools of the early 2000s have an impact? What are collection best practices today? Where will our future collections focus?
Using statistical data from Ulrich’s Periodicals Directory and similar tools, presenters will consider how the changing landscape of serials publishing over the years has impacted the ways in which librarians have evaluated, selected, and assessed their collections from the days of print directories to today’s e-resource management offerings. This session is intended as a historic review of resources used for collection development during the 30 year history of NASIG. The perspectives of two academic librarians and a subscription agent will be heard, moderated by a representative of Ulrich’s Periodicals Directory Content team.
Librarians seeking an overview of issues in collection development and resource vetting are encouraged to attend. There will be an opportunity for attendees to share their observations with colleagues and the panel.

The document discusses how shared print repositories are transforming library services by allowing libraries to externalize collection management activities. It finds that approximately 20% of NYU's holdings are duplicated in HathiTrust and 10% are duplicated in HathiTrust and a single print repository. This suggests opportunities for NYU to further externalize print management by relying more on these shared collections. For shared repositories to realize their full potential, the document argues they will need to increase horizontal integration, develop governance models, and clearly communicate their value in order to accelerate libraries' transition away from solely managing their own print collections.
A presentation focusing on the data analysis OCLC Research performed on 900K museum records, plus next steps for the nine project museums who now have the capacity to share standards-based records.
The document discusses collaboration between libraries, archives, and museums (LAMs). It provides examples of successful collaborations including the New York Art Consortium of several major art libraries in New York City. It identifies key factors that enable collaboration, such as having an inspiring vision, incentives for staff, and resources to support collaborative projects. The document advocates for LAMs to move beyond just cooperation to more deeply collaborative partnerships.

Editor's Notes
[As told to Merrilee Proffitt] NYPL Labs represents a shift in the approach to digitization, which is understanding digitization as part of an organic whole. NYPL labs is not about digitization production, which is now distributed across the library. NYPL Labs is a place for experimentation, a place to try things out. failure is acceptable and expected. They are not attempting to build everything from scratch – taking bits and pieces of digital library components built elsewhere and put them into play in the labs environment. NYPL Labs is not a traditional digital library unit, if there is such a thing.
