Investigations of biblical texts have always been the topic of heated discussion among theologians and linguists, as well as representatives of other scientific disciplines. Over the years, the biblical stories and testimonies have been persistently challenged by different scholars, with a particular emphasis on the language of the Bible. In this paper, we dwell upon the events preceding the emergence of the King James Version and the immense authority that the KJV gained both in the churches of England and among the common people of the British Isles. As this translation of the Bible was authorised by King James, it is often referred to as the Authorised Version, and has become the Official Bible of England. Many people still believe that the KJV is The Bible, since according to them, its creation was inspired by God himself. Hence it becomes essential to reveal the factors which contribute to the supremacy of its language and majesty of style.

In English media discourse speech impact is made through various means among which the linguistic devices are of special importance. It is necessary to analyze the effectiveness of different linguistic devices found in ads as they have a great influence on consumer choices. The advertising industry has evolved throughout the previous decades, thus causing the emergence of new psycholinguistic aspects of discourse which need to be researched thoroughly. It is thanks to experimental researches that advertisements are viewed as sociocultural units. Ads’ comprehension differs among various groups that include people of different age, gender, as well as people having diverse levels of language fluency. One of the most commonly accepted experimental methods of measuring the effectiveness of linguistic units is the semantic differential scale. Charles E. Osgood's theory of the semantic differential is a general attempt to measure the semantics of words, particularly adjectives, and the...

The recognition of the Armenian Genocide is one of the key and intricate problems on the Armenian national agenda, often spoken and written about. A variety of political, historiographical, psychological and social analyses has been conducted, a profound mass of venerable literature has been created, thereby introducing the issue to the international community and drawing the consideration of both Armenian and foreign scholars. With such an abundance of materials on the Armenian Genocide, nevertheless, some aspects of the issue need a thorough examination. Today special attention should be paid to the study of linguistic facts which are key elements of the textual mechanisms of adequate interpretation or perversion and distortion of the historical events. The textological analysis of diverse interpretations is quite a new and important statement in the research of the issue under consideration and is aimed at studying the linguistic expressions of various attitudes towards the issue...

National identity can be traced in almost all the spheres of human habitat – cultural, institutional, political, literary, pshychological, daily routine and many others, that is both in the verbal and non verbal activities of all and each person, respectively. In this research we look upon the British identity manifestations in the post-modern multifaceted literary frame based on the English short story contexts. Given the popular approach of the marked British conventionalism, concepts and cultural artefacts, as it were, we elucidate the stories of three  contemporary women writers — A.S. Byatt; J.Gardam and D.Moggach, as a field to reveal literary reproductions of identity paradigm and its social-cultural component in view of the city of London and certain niches of its subcultures. The analysis produces challenging ideas when considering social and spatial distinctions of London’s image according to the writers’ subjective attitudes, as well as the moral of the past and present, ...

Manipulation through different media platforms can immediately span practically every element of human life since it attracts, maintains and processes human attention very quickly. This unparalleled technical potential for propaganda and manipulation on social networks can be realized through different language means that may be utilized to influence others. In this paper, our main task will be to find out how manipulation in media is realized through the morpho-syntactic properties of language.

At the present moment, media saturation provides us with a reasonably objective criterion available for examination.  In a loose sense, the Internet has become a parallel reality where people live to pursue constantly updated news at the repeated click of a button, which maintains the reader's immediate interest in every sense of the word.  In perusing news articles, placing a particular emphasis on their manipulative nature, we can plunge deeply into such language layers as that of the lexical, grammatical, stylistic, etc.  In this paper we place our central interest on the lexical aspect of language manipulation because words are the foundation of meaning in speech.  A functional-communicative view of the lexical material of the discourse of news articles reveals the effect of a journalist's choice and arrangement of words on the reported news and how the manipulative potential of language unfolds.

This paper is an approach, the purpose of which is to study the concept of manipulation as a psychological and linguistic phenomenon where the central emphasis is on the manipulative techniques and tactics that are utilized for various reasons such as illegitimate domination and social abuse. At this level of investigation we find it essential to illustrate different approaches to the study of this phenomenon as well as certain dictionary definitions to be able to fully perceive and comprehend the properties of manipulation.

The article is devoted to the critical analysis of the book The Armenian Massacres in Ottoman Turkey: A Disputed Genocide by Guenter Lewy who aims to deny the undeniable fact of the horrendous genocidal events in Western Armenia at the end of the nineteenth and beginning of twentieth century. The textological study of the work against the background of the cultural-historical facts characteristic of the period reveals Lewy's policy of language use and his strategy of affecting the perception of the readers unaware of the essence of the events instigated by the Ottoman authorities. Implementing his long-range persuasion tactics, Lewy tries to expand the Turkish viewpoints by introducing his 'truth' about the Armenian Genocide into the work. The examination of the linguistic facts in Guenter Lewy's book brings out his intention of distorting the historical reality.

The present article aims to investigate the historical and religious circumstances which incited King James to initiate and start the translation of the Holy Script anew though two other versions of the Bible in English were already there. The stormy period England and the English Church were going through in mid-XVI century and the succession of Prince James VI of Scotland to throne (who became King James I of England) and his unfavorable attitude towards Protestantism made him conceive the idea of the necessity of creating a new English version of the Bible which will provide appropriate influence on the Church and keep it away from Calvinist views and ideas. Through the employment of the descriptive method, the author on the other hand tries to analyse the most prominent events and activities which preconditioned the creation of the new English version of the Bible, known as the King James Bible, which has long proved to be the best translation of the Bible in English.

The present article aims at revealing the potential cognitive function of the syntactic and rhythmic arrangement of a piece of literary text. The focus of our analysis is the study of the representation of the concept of “loneliness” in K. Mansfield’s short stories. It is argued that the rhythm inMansfield's short stories can facilitate the reader’s perception of the content of the work, enhance the visual and acoustic effects, perform a figurative function, transferring the physical, emotional, mental states of the characters. Additionally, it is asserted that the syntactic arrangement and the rhythm of a piece of text contribute to the formation and perception of the cognitive meaning of the text.

Recent investigations have established that manipulation is the abuse of language realized through various consciously employed linguistic means aimed to influence the listeners’ or readers’ social, interpersonal and mental states and behaviours, thus misdirecting their actions. Intentionality as one of the basic parameters of manipulation, no doubt, exercises a destructive effect on an individual, group or society at large. Depending on the range of their manipulative attitudes and intentions, often reaching beyond the bounds of morality, manipulators tend to bend reality, distort facts and through seemingly persuasive argumentation and proofs present their subjective reality as truth. This presupposes the employment of certain manipulative tactics and techniques meant to guarantee the manipulator’s success. The present case study attempts to expose the manipulative techniques and tactics deliberately employed by the Azerbaijani author of the article “Armenian So-Called Genocide”, ...

The question of the interaction of language and law is one of the main issues occupying the minds of both the linguists and jurists of our time. The study of the intersection of these scientific fields acquires even more importance nowadays as expansion of economic and cultural cooperation between countries and within countries requires legal regulation, qualified assistance of lawyers and their participation in negotiations, business meetings and in the preparation of documentation. Accordingly, linguistic and translation activities in the sphere of legal relations turn out to be of special significance. Like other functional styles of speech, which are independent systems, the style of official documents has certain communicative goals as well as its own consistent patterns and language characteristics common to the given style. The latter are the subject of the present article.

The article aims at exploring peculiar linguistic features of Legal English – a variety of thematically oriented language applied in the social domain. The focus is on the interaction of language and law and the linguistic maneuvering achieved by the manipulative strategies applied to the use of language. The investigation is meant to show that linguistic manipulation may stimulate the occurrence of ambiguous expressions and double-speak even in legal documents, violating the basic function of law to communicate the truth and express clear-cut ideas. The research also reveals that the use of manipulative tools aimed to achieve practical ends is directly connected with domination and control over people’s perception and interpretation of objective facts. Of particular interest is the analysis of Turkishness (Turkish nation) in the legal texts of Article 301 of the Penal Code of Turkey (versions of 2005 and 2008) which, in fact is a dangerous challenge for the Turkish society, a real...

Text is a broad notion. It may be expressed both in writing and orally in the form of a monologue, dialogue, utterance, etc. This may well be the reason for the persistent interest towards text as such. The great variety of studies on the nature of text and its objectives, however, are all somewhat controversial and lack a unified conceptual approach. Things get even more complicated due to the fact that now into scientific circulation has been introduced the notion of discourse, and evidently of considerable popularity in the current stage of the development of linguistics is the relationship between text and discourse. The present article focuses on the study of the correlation of text and discourse, views literary text as a unit of specific communication between the writer and the reader, as well as centers the attention on the consecutive stages of literary text perception and understanding.

The present article examines the translated versions of the Armenian word yeghern in English and the semantic field of its equivalence. Based on the well-known speech/language dichotomy which is of fundamental importance in linguistics, the author examines the word as a unit of the language system and as an element endowed with a certain amount of dynamism and stylistic and pragmatic nuances in speech. The study of the word yeghern at the linguistic level is based on numerous data provided by explanatory, terminological and synonym dictionaries. The study of the speech peculiarities of the use of this unit is carried out from the point of view of the horizontal and vertical contexts based on the appeal to the Swedish parliament of 68 specialists of various fields. The investigation confirms that despite the broad semantic field of the unit both in Armenian and in English, the English equivalent for the word yeghern is genocide – the only equivalent which was internationally acknowle...

The paper deals with the study of the English translation of The History of Armenia by Movses Khorenatsi and aims at revealing the inadequate cases of translation which are, as a rule described as translational “lacunas”. The investigation shows that translational “lacunas” can be observed on different levels of the target text: lexical-phrasiological, morphological, syntactic and stylistic. Some inadequate transformations may also result in the violation of toponymic elements. Some of these violations can be accounted for not by possibly objective reasons but by the translator’s intent.

The content of the notion “lingua-franca” is analysed on the basis of a number of linguistic works devoted to the English language status. English as Lingua Franca refers to the use of English as a medium of communication between speakers of different languages. Nowadays, contacts between people with different cultural backgrounds are becoming more frequent and much closer. Highly developed skills in intercultural communication have a significant bearing on the quality of relationships between people of various nationalities and cultures. In recent years ELF has been studied by many linguists interested in how its pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar are different from other varieties of English. ELF has now established itself as a major and expanding field of academic research. Its interconnections with teaching and other disciplines are being currently di...

The article aims to discuss the question of deportations as part of the genocidal process, accomplished in western Armenia by the Turks particularly in 1915. Allegations intentionally pushed forward by the Turkish rulers of the period claiming that Armenians were treacherous separatists served as a “well-grounded” justification for them to administer the wholesale deportation of the Armenian population first from eastern and south-eastern provinces, then the capital city Constantinople and other major cities of the empire. The investigation of documented facts as well as the results of other researches shows that the idea of the deportations was conceived and promulgated in 1915 to mask the pre-planned genocidal actions which had come into full swing long before. The Ottoman authorities were somewhat taken aback after they received the joint declaration issued by Great Britain, Russia and France laying the responsibility of the horrendous actions against humanity and civilization ta...

The growth in inter-cultural relations among global academic circles and the globalization of scientific thought it entails, have led to a conflict between various cultures and languages, which is more evident at the language level. English has become a universal language of communication and serves as a tool to disseminate the results of scientific research conducted in various countries, to exchange ideas, to accept or decline hypotheses. One could suppose that English used in a given branch of science includes cultural and linguistic characteristics of scholars of various nationalities which need to be specified and investigated thereby contributing to the further development of scientific communication in the field. The present article offers two models of written and oral academic discourse.

The present paper deals with one of the intricate problems of philology – the question of reading and understanding a work of verbal creativity. The paper aims at emphasizing the methodological value of the hermeneutical approach to the study of literature which comes into being due to the presence of three basic components: imagination, language as a code between the writer and the reader, and the expected ability of the reader to share the author’s emotions and thoughts. Proceeding from the basic statements of hermeneutics and Schleiermacher’s theory of hermeneutical circle in particular, as well as considering the results of our former investigations we come to the conclusion that understanding verbal art is a complex process which is achieved step by step. To provide a reliable mechanism for the application of the hermeneutical approach the investigator has to take the following steps: 1) reveal the correlation of language and speech with the help of the linguostylistic method o...

For many decades Scottish Literature has produced characters that fitted well within the atmosphere of despair and inferiority undergone by the Scottish nation in the course of its history. The question of identity being at its heart, Scottish Literature has revealed a specific feature consisting in the frequent occurrence of traumatized, dual and split personalities. These are protagonists who in the force of Scotland’s history are traumatized and symbolize Scotland’s remarkable tradition of despair and the feeling of inferiority and powerlessness. However, a closer look at the contemporary Scottish female writing permits to take a new angle for exploring identity. Our approach accounts for the role of irony and humor that the characters provide. The fact of incongruity / trauma vs. irony/ creates a basis for insightful explorations of the dual essence of identity in A.L. Kennedy’s and J. Galloway’s writing in the light of such counter-concepts as emotional fulfillment vs. isolatio...

The research has the poetic word in its core which demonstrates an explicit tendency to expand its semantic and stylistic opportunities in the context of the work taking on new emotive-expressive charge. The polyphonic realization of the word obtains a decisive importance in terms of the non-verbality of the literary text taking it beyond the level of the nominative function of the word and participating in the formation of the system of the aesthetic values of the piece of work.
