"Over the last 100 years, since the dawning of the modernist era in the 19th century, there have been major developments in the fields of art practice and theory, altering the course of art history. Changes that occurred in the late 1960s saw the emergence of a conceptual era of art, in which the emphasis and value within art altered; an art object's value was no longer inherent within that object. Rather value was applied through cultural context and what the artworks means. This is particularly evident in the growing environmental art movement. Environmental art is an expansive movement that involves an artistic process or artwork where the artist actively engages with the environment. It is a widely diverse discipline encompassing small personal works, including earth/body art and performance, to permanent, large-scale works. Through specific themed chapters, this thesis aims to establish some of the ways the paradigm of environmental art has evolved since its beginnings in the 1960s. This will be achieved through investigations of three dominant themes and forms of interaction, within environmental art. This thesis focuses on the areas of environmental art that clearly illustrate key concepts in the movement. It explores concepts within feminist art, linking with Ecofeminism; presents investigations into large-scale environmental projects, the most prominent examples of the movement, and lastly, examines works that interact with the idea of ephemerality and the changing role of the gallery.

The last outlaw of visual disciplines: Graffiti and unsanctioned art--from local origins to global phenomenon In recent years street art has grown bolder, more ornate, more sophisticated and--in many cases--more acceptable. Yet unsanctioned public art remains the problem child of cultural expression, the last outlaw of visual disciplines. It has also become a global phenomenon of the 21st century. Made in collaboration with featured artists, Trespass examines the rise and global reach of graffiti and urban art, tracing key figures, events and movements of self-expression in the city's social space, and the history of urban reclamation, protest, and illicit performance. The first book to present the full historical sweep, global reach and technical developments of the street art movement, Trespass features key works by 150 artists, and connects four generations of visionary outlaws including Jean Tinguely, Spencer Tunick, Keith Haring, Os Gemeos, Jenny Holzer, Barry McGee, Gordon Matta-Clark, Shepard Fairey, Blu, Billboard Liberation Front, Guerrilla Girls and Banksy, among others. It also includes dozens of previously unpublished photographs of long-lost works and legendary, ephemeral urban artworks. Also includes: Unpublished images of street art by Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat Unpublished photographs by Subway Art luminary Martha Cooper Unpublished photos from the personal archives of selected artists Incisive essays by Anne Pasternak (director of public arts fund Creative Time) and civil rights lawyer Tony Serra Special feature: exclusive preface by Banksy

"Richard Long is a British Environmental artist who produced his first work, A Line Made by Walking in 1967, which is one of the earliest works associated with Environmental Art. This work was described as an audacious work that, with its radical simplicity, broke with traditions of landscape art. This is because it was one of the first works that employed walking as an artistic process that did not result in a distinctive artwork. A Line Made by Walking involved the process of repeatedly walking back and fourth along a set path in a meadow, resulting in flattened blades of grass which was then photographed. Long’s walks serve to make apparent an idea, for example, the amount of time taken to walk all the paths within an imaginary circle, or the relativity of human and geological time."

"Since the industrial revolution, the earth’s environmental health has steadily grown worse, arguably approaching a critical state. While science and technology offer innovations to help move towards a sustainable planet, another less obvious field is also working towards a more positive environmental future.

Environmental art is defined as an artistic process in which an artist engages with the natural environment. An artistic movement that began in the 1960s, environmental art has gradually evolved into a form that encompasses a large number of ecologically driven works, which allow artists to improve environmental conditions through a more proactive, yet aesthetic role.

Environmental art draws on a wide variety of approaches, including ecological feminist principles (Ecofeminism); large, remedial landscape architecture; biosculpture, that incorporates a living components, like water purifying moss; as well as social sculpture that aims to combine environmental conscience with social reform. These works introduce an aesthetic dimension to environmental remediation, incorporating sculptural and design elements. While forming a core element of environmental art since its inception, ecological aestheticism is slowly becoming a more wide spread art form.

Presenting various different interactions between artist and environment, this paper will begin with a brief overview of the early environmental art movement that establishes the history of environmental art and contextualises more recent environmentally remedial artworks. It will also discuss some of the different forms of environmental art, to finally focus on the forms that are ecological in focus that repair damaged ecosystems, offer environmental solutions and generally serve a remedial function in a positive environmental future.

"Ecofeminist Art is a genre of Environmental Art that combines the essential understandings of Ecofeminism with the ecological focus of Environmental Art. With two dominant forms, Ecofeminism can be broadly understood as either drawing from principal links with the ideas of the Earth Goddess, Gaia and Mother Nature, in Cultural Ecofeminism; and social activism to remedy the planet, the responsibility of which falls to women, through Social Ecofeminism. These two types of Ecofeminism can be seen to influence the art of many women working directive with the environment.

While the early Environmental Art movement was largely dominated by men, women artists like Agnes Denes and Nancy Holt were producing artworks that engaged with the landscape, establishing a field of Environmental Art that has progressed into contemporary art, with artists like Jackie Brookner and Patricia Johanson.

This article explores the ideas and philosophies within feminism relating to the environment, discussing the relationship between women and the environment, how Ecofeminist concepts have informed Environmental Art produced by women. Beginning with a discussion of Ecofeminism, it will include how the various interactions between women artists and the environmental have changed since the beginning of Environmental Art in the 1960s, through highlighting several prominent women working in Environmental Art.

Since the industrial revolution, the earth’s environmental heath has steadily grown worse, arguably approaching a critical state. With the convenience of technology came pollution, environmental degradation and human apathy towards the planet. Thus, in looking towards a more healthy environmental future, substantial changes need to occur. In this future, art can have a highly proactive role to play. This paper seeks to present many of the artworks that have contributed to a more positive environmental future since the beginning of the environmental art movement in the 1960s.

The description ‘environmental art’ is used as an umbrella term to describe works in which artists actively engage with the environment. While not all environmental artworks are ecological in nature, many function to substantially alter and contribute to the natural environmental to undo damage caused by humanity. These works introduce an aesthetic dimension to environmental degradation incorporating sculptural and design elements, as well as landscape architecture.

Presenting various different interactions between artist and environment, this paper comments on the positive role art can play in building a better environmental future, combining aesthetics with ecology. It includes works that contribute to the environment through actively purifying water, works that address loss of habitat, large-scale works that draw attention to deforestation and works that aim to incorporate environmental conscience with social reform.
Doing a short closed analysis can also help to develop a keener eye for the details in artworks and is formed from four basic elements.

"Ecological Education in art Schools"

Art schools generally emphasize creativity, innovation and exploration of materials. However, in a world facing environmental crisis, tertiary art education (referring to university-based art schools, TAFE colleges, and independent organisations) can play a major part in shaping future art practices, both through the development of future artists and future art educators. Therefore, it is becoming increasingly important for tertiary institutions to incorporate positive ecological sensibilities into the curriculum. For example, introducing students to the manner in which ecology can be investigated through art allows students to express ecological sensibilities to a wider community through the forum of art. Encouraging sustainable individual art practices is an important factor in ensuring the arts maintain long term sustainability. And introducing environmental awareness within art is essential, as many of the materials used in art production are hazardous both to the environment and individual artists’ health.
Thus, this presentation seeks to investigate these themes and the manner in which they could be introduced into a tertiary curriculum. Rather than providing a resolved answer to how this could be achieved, this presentation is intended to invite discussion and exchange of ideas, using particular artistic practices as examples.

Minus a few naysayers, there is unanimous agreement that our planet is on the brink of ecological collapse. The arts are uniquely positioned to play a positive part in influencing a change in environmental sensibilities. Globally, since the 1970s, there have been many artists that have addressed ecology through their art, both actively by moving into an environment and repairing the local ecology, and/or passively by providing commentary on areas of ecological concern, drawing the attention of the general public.
Australia has followed global trends in investigating ecology through art, considering environmental concerns in Australia such as landfill, sustainability and food security. This presentation will look at some of the ways that artists are addressing ecological and environmental awareness through artistic practices, specifically highlighting artworks and practices within Australia.
