Over the past few years alone, the lensing community has discovered thousands of strong lens candidates, and spectroscopically confirmed hundreds of them. In this time of abundance, it becomes pragmatic to focus our time and resources on the few extraordinary systems, in order to most efficiently study the universe. In this paper, we present such a system: DESI-090.9854-35.9683, a cluster-scale lens at $z_{\rm l} = 0.49$, with seven observed lensed sources around the core, and additional lensed sources further out in the cluster. From the number and the textbook configuration of the lensed images, a tight constraint on the mass potential of the lens is possible. This would allow for detailed analysis on the dark and luminous matter content within galaxy clusters, as well as a probe into dark energy and high-redshift galaxies. We present our spatially resolved kinematic measurements of this system from the Very Large Telescope Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer, which confirm five of these source galaxies (in ascending order, at $z_{\rm s} = 0.962, 0.962, 1.166, 1.432,$ and $1.432$). With previous Hubble Space Telescope imaging in the F140W and F200LP bands, we also present a simple two power-law profile flux-based lens model that, for a cluster lens, well models the five lensed arc families with redshifts. We determine the mass to be $M(< θ_{\rm E}) = 4.78\times10^{13} M_{\odot}$ for the primary mass potential. From the model, we extrapolate the redshift of one of the two source galaxies not yet spectroscopically confirmed to be at $z_{\rm s}=4.52^{+1.03}_{-0.71}$.

We present the first VLT/MUSE observations of a quasar featuring a proximate molecular absorption system, SDSS J125917.31+030922.5. The proximate damped Ly$α$ absorption acts as a natural coronagraph, removing the quasar emission over $\sim$40 Å in wavelength, and allows us to detect extended Ly$α$ emission without the necessity of subtracting the quasar emission. This natural coronagraph permits the investigation of the quasar environment down to its inner regions ($r < 20$ kpc), where galaxy interactions or feedback processes should have the most noticeable effects. Our observations reveal a dense environment, with a highly asymmetric Ly$α$ emission within $2"$ ($\sim 15$ kpc), possibly shaped by a companion galaxy, and a southern extension of the nebulae at about 50~kpc, with rotation-like kinematic signature. The width of the Ly$α$ emission is broadest closer to the quasar, indicating perturbed kinematics as expected if interactions and significant gas flows are present. The foreground absorbing system itself is redshifted by $\approx $400 km/s relative to the background quasar, and therefore is likely arising from gas moving towards the quasar. Finally two additional Ly$α$ emitters are detected with $>10\,σ$ significance at 96 and 223 kpc from the quasar, making this field overdense relative to other similar observations of quasars at $z\sim 3$. Our results support the hypothesis that quasars with proximate neutral/molecular absorption trace rich environments where galaxy interactions are at play and motivates further studies of H$_2$-selected quasars to shed light on feeding and feedback processes.

The efficiency of science observation Short-Term Scheduling (STS) can be defined as being a function of how many highly ranked observations are completed per unit time. Current STS at ESO's Paranal observatory is achieved through filtering and ranking observations via well-defined algorithms, leading to a proposed observation at time t. This Paranal STS model has been successfully employed for more than a decade. Here, we summarise the current VLT(I) STS model, and outline ongoing efforts of optimising the scientific return of both the VLT(I) and future ELT. We describe the STS simulator we have built that enables us to evaluate how changes in model assumptions affect STS effectiveness. Such changes include: using short-term predictions of atmospheric parameters instead of assuming their constant time evolution; assessing how the ranking weights on different observation parameters can be changed to optimise the scheduling; changing STS to be more `dynamic' to consider medium-term scheduling constraints. We present specific results comparing how machine learning predictions of the seeing can improve STS efficiency when compared to the current model of using the last 10\,min median of the measured seeing for observation selection.

Large language models (LLMs) have revolutionized Natural Language Processing (NLP) by minimizing the need for complex feature engineering. However, the application of LLMs in specialized domains like biopharmaceuticals and chemistry remains largely unexplored. These fields are characterized by intricate terminologies, specialized knowledge, and a high demand for precision areas where general purpose LLMs often fall short. In this study, we introduce PharmaGPT, a suite of domain specilized LLMs with 13 billion and 70 billion parameters, specifically trained on a comprehensive corpus tailored to the Bio-Pharmaceutical and Chemical domains. Our evaluation shows that PharmaGPT surpasses existing general models on specific-domain benchmarks such as NAPLEX, demonstrating its exceptional capability in domain-specific tasks. Remarkably, this performance is achieved with a model that has only a fraction, sometimes just one-tenth-of the parameters of general-purpose large models. This advancement establishes a new benchmark for LLMs in the bio-pharmaceutical and chemical fields, addressing the existing gap in specialized language modeling. It also suggests a promising path for enhanced research and development, paving the way for more precise and effective NLP applications in these areas.

In the past five years, six quasi-periodic X-ray eruption (QPE) sources have been discovered in the nuclei of nearby galaxies. Their origin remains an open question. We present MUSE integral field spectroscopy of five QPE host galaxies to characterize their properties. We find that 3/5 galaxies host extended emission line regions (EELRs) up to 10 kpc in size. The EELRs are photo-ionized by a non-stellar continuum, but the current nuclear luminosity is insufficient to power the observed emission lines. The EELRs are decoupled from the stars both kinematically and in projected sky position, and the low velocities and velocity dispersions ($<$ 100 km s$^{-1}$ and $\lesssim 75$ km s$^{-1}$ respectively) are inconsistent with being AGN- or shock-driven. The origin of the EELRs is likely a previous phase of nuclear activity. The QPE host galaxy properties are strikingly similar to those of tidal disruption events (Wevers et al. submitted). The preference for a very short-lived (the typical EELR lifetime is $\sim$15000 years), gas-rich phase where the nucleus has recently faded significantly suggests that TDEs and QPEs may share a common formation channel, disfavoring AGN accretion disk instabilities as the origin of QPEs. In the assumption that QPEs are related to extreme mass ratio inspiral systems (EMRIs; stellar-mass objects on bound orbits about massive black holes), the high incidence of EELRs and recently faded nuclear activity can be used to aid in the localization of the host galaxies of EMRIs discovered by low frequency gravitational wave observatories.

Recent quasar absorption line observations suggest that reionization may end as late as $z \approx 5.3$. As a means to search for large neutral hydrogen islands at $z<6$, we revisit long dark gaps in the Ly$β$ forest in VLT/X-Shooter and Keck/ESI quasar spectra. We stack the Ly$α$ forest corresponding to both edges of these Ly$β$ dark gaps and identify a damping wing-like extended absorption profile. The average redshift of the stacked forest is $z=5.8$. By comparing these observations with reionization simulations, we infer that such a damping wing-like feature can be naturally explained if these gaps are at least partially created by neutral islands. Conversely, simulated dark gaps lacking neutral hydrogen struggle to replicate the observed damping wing features. Furthermore, this damping wing-like profile implies that the volume-averaged neutral hydrogen fraction must be $\langle x_{\rm HI} \rangle \geq 6.1 \pm 3.9\%$ at $z = 5.8$. Our results offer robust evidence that reionization extends below $z=6$.

We investigate the black hole mass function at $z\sim5$ using XQz5, our recent sample of the most luminous quasars between the redshifts $4.5 < z < 5.3$. We include 72 quasars with black hole masses estimated from velocity-broadened emission-line measurements and single-epoch virial prescriptions in the footprint of a highly complete parent survey. The sample mean Eddington ratio and standard deviation is $\logλ\approx -0.20\pm0.24$. The completeness-corrected mass function is modelled as a double power-law, and we constrain its evolution across redshift assuming accretion-dominated mass growth. We estimate the evolution of the mass function from $z=5-4$, presenting joint constraints on accretion properties through a measured dimensionless e-folding parameter, $k_{\rm{ef}} \equiv \langleλ\rangle U (1-ε)/ε= 1.79\pm0.06$, where $\langleλ\rangle$ is the mean Eddington ratio, $U$ is the duty cycle, and $ε$ is the radiative efficiency. If these supermassive black holes were to form from seeds smaller than $10^8\,M_{\odot}$, the growth rate must have been considerably faster at $z\gg5$ than observed from $z=5-4$. A growth rate exceeding $3\times$ the observed rate would reduce the initial heavy seed mass to $10^{5-6}\,M_{\odot}$, aligning with supermassive star and/or direct collapse seed masses. Stellar mass ($10^2\,M_{\odot}$) black hole seeds would require $\gtrsim4.5\times$ the observed growth rate at $z\gg5$ to reproduce the measured active black hole mass function. A possible pathway to produce the most extreme quasars is radiatively inefficient accretion flow, suggesting black holes with low angular momentum or photon trapping in supercritically accreting thick discs.

We study the environment of the z=6.33 ultraluminous quasar SDSS J010013.02+280225.8 (J0100) to understand its association with large-scale structure. Theoretical models propose high-redshift quasars as markers of galaxy overdensities residing in the most massive dark matter halos (DMHs) in the early universe. J0100 is an ultraluminous quasar with the most massive black hole known at z>6, suggesting a high likelihood of residing in a massive DMH. We present wide-field ($\sim$522 square arcminute) imaging in the r-, i-, and z-bands from the Large Binocular Camera on the Large Binocular Telescope, with Y- and J-band imaging from the Wide-field Infrared Camera on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, centered on J0100. Applying color selections, we identify 23 objects as i-droput Lyman Break Galaxy (LBG) candidates in the J0100 field. We use the deep photometric catalog in the 1.27 square degree COSMOS field to calculate the density of LBGs in a blank field, and to estimate the selection completeness and purity. The observed surface density of LBG candidates in the J0100 field corresponds to a galaxy overdensity of $δ$=4 (at 8.4$σ$). This large-scale overdensity suggests that the $\sim$ 22 square arcminute overdensity found by Kashino et al. using JWST data extends out to much larger scales. We calculate the angular auto-correlation function of the candidates and find a positive correlation on $\lesssim$ 10 arcminute scales as well as evidence of asymmetries in their spatial distribution, further suggesting a direct detection of large-scale structure around the ultra-luminous quasar J0100.

In recent years, large language models(LLMs) have attracted significant attention due to their exceptional performance across a multitude of natural language process tasks, and have been widely applied in various fields. However, the application of large language models in the Intellectual Property (IP) domain is challenging due to the strong need for specialized knowledge, privacy protection, processing of extremely long text in this field. In this technical report, we present for the first time a low-cost, standardized procedure for training IP-oriented LLMs, meeting the unique requirements of the IP domain. Using this standard process, we have trained the PatentGPT series models based on open-source pretrained models. By evaluating them on the open-source IP-oriented benchmark MOZIP, our domain-specific LLMs outperforms GPT-4, indicating the effectiveness of the proposed training procedure and the expertise of the PatentGPT models in the IP domain. Remarkably, our model surpassed GPT-4 on the 2019 China Patent Agent Qualification Examination, scoring 65 and matching human expert levels. Additionally, the PatentGPT model, which utilizes the SMoE architecture, achieves performance comparable to that of GPT-4 in the IP domain and demonstrates a better cost-performance ratio on long-text tasks, potentially serving as an alternative to GPT-4 within the IP domain.

The [CII] 158 $μ$m emission line and the underlying far-infrared (FIR) dust continuum are important tracers for studying star formation and kinematic properties of early galaxies. We present a survey of the [CII] emission lines and FIR continua of 31 luminous quasars at $z>6.5$ using the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) and the NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA) at sub-arcsec resolution. This survey more than doubles the number of quasars with [CII] and FIR observations at these redshifts and enables statistical studies of quasar host galaxies deep into the epoch of reionization. We detect [CII] emission in 27 quasar hosts with a luminosity range of $L_{\rm [CII]}=(0.3-5.5)\times10^9~L_\odot$ and detect the FIR continuum of 28 quasar hosts with a luminosity range of $L_{\rm FIR}=(0.5-13.0)\times10^{12}~L_\odot$. Both $L_{\rm [CII]}$ and $L_{\rm FIR}$ are correlated ($ρ\simeq0.4$) with the quasar bolometric luminosity, albeit with substantial scatter. The quasar hosts detected by ALMA are clearly resolved with a median diameter of $\sim$5 kpc. About 40% of the quasar host galaxies show a velocity gradient in [CII] emission, while the rest show either dispersion-dominated or disturbed kinematics. Basic estimates of the dynamical masses of the rotation-dominated host galaxies yield $M_{\rm dyn}=(0.1-7.5)\times10^{11}~M_\odot$. Considering our findings alongside those of literature studies, we found that the ratio between $M_{\rm BH}$ and $M_{\rm dyn}$ is about ten times higher than that of local $M_{\rm BH}-M_{\rm dyn}$ relation on average but with substantial scatter (the ratio difference ranging from $\sim$0.6 to 60) and large uncertainties.

Strong gravitational magnification by massive galaxy clusters enable us to detect faint background sources, resolve their detailed internal structures, and in the most extreme cases identify and study individual stars in distant galaxies. Highly magnified individual stars allow for a wide range of applications, including studies of stellar populations in distant galaxies and constraining small-scale dark matter structures. However, these applications have been hampered by the small number of events observed, as typically one or a few stars are identified from each distant galaxy. Here, we report the discovery of 46 significant microlensed stars in a single strongly-lensed high-redshift galaxy behind the Abell 370 cluster at redshift of 0.725 when the Universe was half of its current age (dubbed the ``Dragon arc''), based on two observations separated by one year with the James Webb Space Telescope ({\it JWST}). These events are mostly found near the expected lensing critical curves, suggesting that these are magnified individual stars that appear as transients from intracluster stellar microlenses. Through multi-wavelength photometry and colors, we constrain stellar types and find that many of them are consistent with red giants/supergiants magnified by factors of thousands. This finding reveals an unprecedented high occurrence of microlensing events in the Dragon arc, and proves that {\it JWST}'s time-domain observations open up the possibility of conducting statistical studies of high-redshift stars and subgalactic scale perturbations in the lensing dark matter field.

Due to the uncertainty of traffic participants' intentions, generating safe but not overly cautious behavior in interactive driving scenarios remains a formidable challenge for autonomous driving. In this paper, we address this issue by combining a deep learning-based trajectory prediction model with risk potential field-based motion planning. In order to comprehensively predict the possible future trajectories of other vehicles, we propose a target-region based trajectory prediction model(TRTP) which considers every region a vehicle may arrive in the future. After that, we construct a risk potential field at each future time step based on the prediction results of TRTP, and integrate risk value to the objective function of Model Predictive Contouring Control(MPCC). This enables the uncertainty of other vehicles to be taken into account during the planning process. Balancing between risk and progress along the reference path can achieve both driving safety and efficiency at the same time. We also demonstrate the security and effectiveness performance of our method in the CARLA simulator.

Around a million quasars have been catalogued in the Universe by probing deeper and using new methods for discovery. However, the hardest ones to find seem to be the rarest and brightest specimen. In this work, we study the properties of the most luminous of all quasars found so far. It has been overlooked until recently, which demonstrates that modern all-sky surveys have much to reveal. The black hole in this quasar accretes around one solar mass per day onto an existing mass of $\sim$17 billion solar masses. In this process its accretion disc alone releases a radiative energy of $2\times 10^{41}$ Watts. If the quasar is not strongly gravitationally lensed, then its broad line region (BLR) is expected to have the largest physical and angular diameter occurring in the Universe, and will allow the Very Large Telescope Interferometer to image its rotation and measure its black hole mass directly. This will be an important test for BLR size-luminosity relations, whose extrapolation has underpinned common black-hole mass estimates at high redshift.

Protoclusters, the progenitors of galaxy clusters, trace large scale structures in the early Universe and are important to our understanding of structure formation and galaxy evolution. To date, only a handful of protoclusters have been identified in the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). As one of the rarest populations in the early Universe, distant quasars that host active supermassive black holes are thought to reside in the most massive dark matter halos at that cosmic epoch, and could thus potentially pinpoint some of the earliest protoclusters. In this letter, we report the discovery of a massive protocluster around a luminous quasar at $z=6.63$. This protocluster is anchored by the quasar, and includes three [CII] emitters at $z\sim6.63$, 12 spectroscopically confirmed Ly$α$ emitters (LAEs) at $6.54<z\le6.64$, and a large number of narrow-band imaging selected LAE candidates at the same redshift. This structure has an overall overdensity of $δ=3.3^{+1.1}_{-0.9}$ within $\sim35\times74$ cMpc$^2$ on the sky and an extreme overdensity of $δ>30$ in its central region (i.e., $R\lesssim2$ cMpc). We estimate that this protocluster will collapse into a galaxy cluster with a mass of $6.9^{+1.2}_{-1.4}\times10^{15}~M_\odot$ at the current epoch, more massive than the most massive clusters known in the local Universe such as Coma. In the quasar vicinity, we discover a double-peaked LAE which implies that the quasar has a UV lifetime greater than 0.8 Myrs and has already ionized its surrounding intergalactic medium.

JWST provides an unprecedented opportunity for unbiased surveys of H$α$-emitting galaxies at $z>4$ with the NIRCam wide-field slitless spectroscopy (WFSS). In this work, we present a census of Ly$α$ escape fraction ($f_{esc, Lyα}$) of 165 star-forming galaxies at $z=4.9-6.3$ using their H$α$ emission directly measured from FRESCO NIRCam/WFSS data. We search for Ly$α$ emission of each H$α$-emitting galaxy in VLT/MUSE data. The overall $f_{esc, Lyα}$ measured by stacking is $f_{esc, Lyα}$ is $0.090\pm0.006$. We find that $f_{esc, Lyα}$ displays a strong dependence on the observed UV slope ($β_{\rm obs}$) and E(B-V), such that the bluest galaxies ($β_{\rm obs}\sim-2.5$) have the largest escape fractions ($f_{\rm esc, Lyα}\approx0.6$), indicative of the crucial role of dust and gas in modulating the escape of Ly$α$ photons. $f_{esc, Lyα}$ is less well related to other parameters, including the UV luminosity and stellar mass, and the variation in $f_{esc, Lyα}$ with them can be explained by their underlying coupling with E(B-V) or $β_{\rm obs}$. Our results suggest a tentative decline in $f_{esc, Lyα}$ at $z\gtrsim 5$, implying increasing intergalactic medium attenuation towards higher redshift. Furthermore, the dependence of $f_{esc, Lyα}$ on $β_{\rm obs}$ is proportional to that of the ionizing photon escape fraction ($f_{\rm esc, LyC}$), indicating the escape of Ly$α$ and ionizing photon may be regulated by similar physical processes. With $f_{esc, Lyα}$ as a proxy to $f_{\rm esc, LyC}$, we infer that UV-faint ($M_{\rm UV}>-16$) galaxies contribute $>70\%$ of the total ionizing emissivity at $z=5-6$. If these relations hold during the epoch of reionization, UV-faint galaxies can contribute the majority of UV photon budget to reionize the Universe.

Star-forming galaxies (SFGs) adhere to a surprisingly tight scaling relation of dust attenuation parameterized by the infrared excess (IRX=$L_{\rm IR}/L_{\rm UV}$), being jointly determined by the star formation rate (SFR), galaxy size ($R_{\rm e}$), metallicity ($Z$/Z$_\odot$) and axial ratio ($b/a$). We examine how these galaxy parameters determine the effective dust attenuation and give rise to the universal IRX relation, utilizing a simple two-component star-dust geometry model in which dust in the dense and diffuse interstellar medium (ISM) follows exponential mass density profiles, connected with but not necessarily identical to the stellar mass profiles. Meanwhile, empirical relations are adopted to link galaxy properties, including the gas--star formation relation, the dust-to-stellar size relation, as well as the dust-to-gas ratio versus metallicity relation. By fitting a large sample of local SFGs with the model, we obtain the best-fitting model parameters as a function of metallicity, showing that the two-component geometry model is able to successfully reproduce the dependence of IRX on SFR, $R_{\rm e}$, $b/a$ at given $Z$/Z$_\odot$, as well as the dependence of power-law indices on metallicity. Moreover, we also retrieve constraints on the model geometry parameters, including the optical depth of birth clouds (BCs), BC-to-total dust mass fraction, BC covering factor of UV-emitting stars, and star-to-total dust disc radius ratio, which all evolve with galaxy metallicity. Finally, a consistent picture of how the star-dust geometry in SFGs evolves with galaxy metallicity is discussed.

Compared to conventional RT (of conventional dose rate), FLASH-RT (of ultra-high dose rate) can provide additional normal tissue sparing, which however has created a new nonconvex and nonsmooth optimization problem that is highly challenging to solve. In this paper, we propose a stochastic three-operator splitting (STOS) algorithm to address the FLASH optimization problem. We establish the convergence and convergence rates of the STOS algorithm under the nonconvex framework for both unbiased gradient estimators and variance-reduced gradient estimators. These stochastic gradient estimators include the most popular ones, such as SGD, SAGA, SARAH, and SVRG, among others. The effectiveness of the STOS algorithm is validated using FLASH radiotherapy planning for patients.

Planetary nebulae (PNe) are essential tracers of the kinematics of the diffuse halo and intracluster light where stellar spectroscopy is unfeasible, due to their strong emission lines. However, that is not all they can reveal about the underlying stellar population. In recent years, it has also been found that PNe in the metal-poor halos of galaxies have different properties (specific frequency, luminosity function), than PNe in the more metal-rich galaxy centers. A more quantitative understanding of the role of age and metallicity in these relations would turn PNe into valuable stellar-population tracers. In order to do that, a full characterization of PNe in regions where the stellar light can also be analysed in detail is necessary. In this work, we make use of integral-field spectroscopic data covering the central regions of galaxies, which allow us to measure both stellar ages and metallicities as well as to detect PNe. This analysis is fundamental to calibrate PNe as stellar population tracers and to push our understanding of galaxy properties at unprecedented galactocentric distances.

In this study, we describe XQz5, a sample of 83 ultraluminous quasars in the redshift range $4.5 < z < 5.3$ with optical and near-infrared spectroscopic observations, with unprecendented completeness at the bright end of the quasar luminosity function. The sample is observed with the Southern Astrophysical Research Telescope, the Very Large Telescope, and the ANU 2.3m Telescope, resulting in a high-quality, moderate-resolution spectral atlas of the brightest known quasars within the redshift range. We use established virial mass relations to derive the black hole masses by measuring the observed Mg\,\textsc{ii}$λ$2799Å emission-line and we estimate the bolometric luminosity with bolometric corrections to the UV continuum. Comparisons to literature samples show that XQz5 bridges the redshift gap between other X-shooter quasar samples, XQ-100 and XQR-30, and is a brighter sample than both. Luminosity-matched lower-redshift samples host more massive black holes, which indicate that quasars at high redshift are more active than their counterparts at lower-redshift, in concordance with recent literature.

We present gas-phase metallicity measurements for 583 emission line galaxies at $0.3<z<0.85$, including 388 dwarf galaxies with $log(M_{\star}/M_{\odot}) < 9.5$, and explore the dependence of the metallicity on the stellar mass and star formation properties of the galaxies. Metallicities are determined through the measurement of emission lines in very deep ($\sim$7 hr exposure) Keck/DEIMOS spectra taken primarily from the HALO7D survey. We measure metallicity with three strong-line calibrations (O3H$β$, R23, and O3O2) for the overall sample, as well as with the faint [Ne III]$λ$3869 and [O III]$λ$4363 emission lines for 112 and 17 galaxies where robust detections were possible. We construct mass-metallicity relations (MZR) for each calibration method, finding MZRs consistent with other strong-line results at comparable redshift, as well as with $z\sim0$ galaxies. We quantify the intrinsic scatter in the MZR as a function of mass, finding it increases with lower stellar mass. We also measure a weak but significant correlation between increased MZR scatter and higher specific star formation rate. We find a weak influence of SFR in the fundamental metallicity relation as well, with an SFR coefficient of $α=0.21$. Finally, we use the flux ratios of the [O II]$λλ$3727,3729 doublet to calculate gas electron density in $\sim$1000 galaxies with $log(M_{\star}/M_{\odot}) < 10.5$ as a function of redshift. We measure low electron densities ($n_e\sim25$ cm$^{-3}$) for $z<1$ galaxies, again consistent with $z\approx0$ conditions, but measure higher densities ($n_e\sim100$ cm$^{-3}$) at $z>1$. These results all suggest that there is little evolution in star-forming interstellar medium conditions from $z\sim1$ to $z=0$, confirmed with a more complete sample of low-mass galaxies than has previously been available in this redshift range.

We report galaxy MACS0416-Y3 behind the lensing cluster MACSJ0416.1--2403 as a tentative rotating disk at $z=8.34$ detected through its [OIII]$\lambda5007$ emission in JWST NIRCam wide-field slitless spectroscopic observations. The discovery is based on our new grism dynamical modeling methodology for JWST NIRCam slitless spectroscopy, using the data from ``Median-band Astrophysics with the Grism of NIRCam in Frontier Fields'' (MAGNIF), a JWST Cycle-2 program. The [OIII]$\lambda5007$ emission line morphology in grism data shows velocity offsets compared to the F480M direct imaging, suggestive of rotation. Assuming a geometrically thin disk model, we constrain the rotation velocity of $v_{\rm rot}=58^{+53}_{-35}$ km s$^{-1}$ via forward modeling of the two-dimensional (2D) spectrum. We obtain the kinematic ratio of $v_{\rm rot}/σ_v=1.6^{+1.9}_{-0.9}$, where $σ_v$ is the velocity dispersion, in line with a quasi-stable thin disk. The resulting dynamical mass is estimated to be $\log(M_{\rm dyn}/M_{\odot})=8.4^{+0.5}_{-0.7}$. If the rotation confirmed, our discovery suggests that rotating gaseous disks may have already existed within 600 million years after Big Bang.

In this study, we utilise data from the European Southern Observatory Large Programme XQ-100, a high-quality sample of 100 X-shooter spectra of the most luminous quasars in the redshift range $3.5 < z < 4.5$, and measure the properties of three prominent optical and ultraviolet broad emission-lines present in the wide wavelength coverage of X-shooter: CIV, MgII, and H$β$. The line properties of all three broad lines are used for virial estimates of the BH mass and their resulting mass estimates for this sample are tightly correlated. The BH mass range is $\log{(\rm{M_{BH}}/\rm{M_\odot})} = 8.6-10.3$ with bolometric luminosities estimated from the 3000A continuum in the range $\log{(\rm{L_{bol}}/\rm{erg\,s^{-1}})} = 46.7-48.0$. Robustly determined properties of these quasars enable a variety of follow-up research in quasar astrophysics, from chemical abundance and evolution in the broad-line region to radiatively driven quasar outflows.

In particular, we derive bolometric luminosities from the rest-frame 3000 A, luminosities using a bolometric correction from the literature, and the black hole masses by modelling the spectral regions around the CIV 1549A and the MgII 2798A emission lines, with scaling relations calibrated in the local universe. We find that the black hole masses derived from both emission lines are in the same range, and the scatter of the measurements agrees with expectations from the scaling relations. The MgII-derived masses are between ~(0.8-12) x 10^9 Msun, and the derived Eddington ratios are within ~0.13-1.73, with a mean (median) of 0.84 (0.72). By comparing the total sample of quasars at z>5.8, from this work and from the literature, to a bolometric luminosity distribution-matched sample at z~1.5, we find that quasars at high redshift host slightly less massive black holes which accrete slightly more rapidly than at lower-z, with a difference in the mean Eddington ratios of the two samples of ~0.27, in agreement with recent literature work.

Using the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) instrument on the Very Large Telescope, we identified three bubble nebulae (denoted as A, B, and C) around an ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) in NGC 55. Bubble A shows a regular elliptical shape surrounding the ULX, with a morphology similar to the canonical ULX bubble around NGC 1313 X-2. It is most likely inflated by the ULX disk wind with a mechanical power close to $10^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Bubble B lies 11\arcsec\ away from the ULX on the sky plane and is not contiguous to Bubble A. It displays a bow shock like morphology, and is likely driven by a collimated dark jet from the ULX with a mechanical power of about $3 \times 10^{38}$ erg s$^{-1}$. If this scenario is correct, we predict that Bubble B should present radio emission with a flux of about $1 - 10^2$ $μ$Jy at 5 GHz. Bubble C appears within Bubble A, with a velocity and velocity dispersion distinct from the rest of Bubble A. Its nature is unclear and could be part of Bubble A as a result of low local density. The optical counterpart of ULX-1 exhibits a broad H$α$, consistent with emission from a hot disk wind.

While in massive galaxies active galactic nuclei (AGN) feedback plays an important role, the role of AGN feedback is still under debate in dwarf galaxies. With well spatially resolved data obtained from the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE), we identify a spatially extended ($\rm \sim 3\; kpc$) and fast ($V_{80} \sim 471\; \rm km\;s^{-1}$) AGN-driven outflow in a dwarf galaxy: SDSS J022849.51-090153.8 with $M_{*} \sim 10^{9.6}\;{\rm M_{\odot}}$ that host an intermediate-mass black hole of $M_{\rm BH} \sim 10^5\;{\rm M_{\odot}}$ and $L_{\rm AGN}/L_{\rm Edd} \sim 0.15$. Through the measurement of the rotation curve, we estimate the escape velocity of the halo and the ratio of the outflow velocity to the halo escape velocity to be $1.09\pm0.04$, indicating that the outflow is capable of escaping not only the galaxy disk but the halo. The outflow size of our AGN is found to be larger than AGN in massive galaxies at the given AGN [O III] luminosity, while the size of the photo-ionized narrow-line region is comparable. These results suggest the important role of AGN feedback through outflows in dwarf galaxies when their central intermediate-mass black holes accrete at high-Eddington ratios.

The final phase of the reionization process can be probed by rest-frame UV absorption spectra of quasars at z>6, shedding light on the properties of the diffuse intergalactic medium within the first Gyr of the Universe. The ESO Large Programme "XQR-30: the ultimate XSHOOTER legacy survey of quasars at z~5.8-6.6" dedicated ~250 hours of observations at the VLT to create a homogeneous and high-quality sample of spectra of 30 luminous quasars at z~6, covering the rest wavelength range from the Lyman limit to beyond the MgII emission. Twelve quasar spectra of similar quality from the XSHOOTER archive were added to form the enlarged XQR-30 sample, corresponding to a total of ~350 hours of on-source exposure time. The median effective resolving power of the 42 spectra is R~11400 and 9800 in the VIS and NIR arm, respectively. The signal-to-noise ratio per 10 km/s pixel ranges from ~11 to 114 at $λ\simeq 1285$ Årest frame, with a median value of ~29. We describe the observations, data reduction and analysis of the spectra, together with some first results based on the E-XQR-30 sample. The low-rank matrix recovery problem often arises in various fields, including signal processing, machine learning, and imaging science. The Riemannian gradient descent (RGD) algorithm has proven to be an efficient algorithm for solving this problem. In this paper, we present a preconditioned Riemannian gradient descent (PRGD) for low-rank matrix recovery. The preconditioner, noted for its simplicity and computational efficiency, is constructed by weighting the (i,j)-th entry of the gradient matrix according to the norms of the i-th row and the j-th column. We establish the theoretical recovery guarantee for PRGD under the restricted isometry property assumption. Experimental results indicate that PRGD can accelerate RGD by up to tenfold in solving low-rank matrix recovery problems such as matrix completion.

With Very Large Telescope (VLT) Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) observations, we detected highly variable helium emission lines from the optical counterpart of the supersoft ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) NGC 247 ULX-1. No Balmer lines can be seen in the source spectrum. This is the first evidence for the presence of a helium donor star in ULXs, consistent with a prediction that helium donor stars may be popular in ULXs. The helium lines with a FWHM of about 200 km/s are likely produced on the outer accretion disk. Their strong variation implies that the central X-ray source can be significantly obscured to the outer disk. Also, a ring or a double-ring structure is revealed in the MUSE image. It is unknown whether or not it is related to the progenitor of the ULX binary.

We report the detection of a pair of massive quiescent galaxies likely in the process of merging at the center of the spectroscopically confirmed, extremely massive protocluster BOSS1244 at $z=2.24\pm0.02$. These galaxies, BOSS1244-QG1 and BOSS1244-QG2, were detected with Hubble Space Telescope (HST) grism slitless spectroscopic observations. These two quiescent galaxies are among the brightest member galaxies with $z=2.223-2.255$ in BOSS1244 and reside at redshifts $z=2.244$ and $z=2.242$, with a half-light radius of $6.76\pm0.50$ and $2.72\pm0.16$ kpc, respectively. BOSS1244-QG1 and BOSS1244-QG2 are separated by a projected distance of about 70 physical kpc, implying that the two galaxies likely merge to form a massive brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) with size and mass similar to the most massive BCGs in the local Universe. We thus infer that BCG formation through dry major mergers may happen earlier than the full assembly of a cluster core, which broadens our previous understanding of the co-evolution of mature galaxy clusters and BCGs in the nearby Universe. Moreover, we find a strong density-star formation relation over a scale of $\sim18$ co-moving Mpc in BOSS1244, i.e. star formation activity decreases as density increases, implying that the quenching of star formation in BCGs and their progenitors is likely governed by environment-related processes before the virialization of the cluster core.

With a spectral energy distribution constructed from near-infrared spectra and broadband photometry, the AD models find a black hole mass of $\log(M_{\rm{AD}}/M_{\odot}) = 10.31^{+0.17}_{-0.14}$ with an anisotropy-corrected bolometric luminosity of $\log{(L_{\rm{bol}}/\rm{erg\,s^{-1}})} = 47.87 \pm 0.10$, and derive an Eddington ratio of $0.29^{+0.11}_{-0.10}$ as well as a radiative efficiency of $0.09^{+0.05}_{-0.03}$. Using the near-infrared spectra, we estimate the single-epoch virial black hole mass estimate to be $\log(M_{\rm{SE}}/M_{\odot}) = 10.33 \pm 0.08$, with a monochromatic luminosity at 3000Å of $\log{(L(\rm{3000\textÅ})/\rm{erg\,s^{-1}})} = 47.66 \pm 0.01$. As an independent approach, AD fitting has the potential to complement the single-epoch virial mass method in obtaining stronger constraints on properties of massive quasar black holes across a wide range of redshifts.

Cosmic reionization was the last major phase transition of hydrogen from neutral to highly ionized in the intergalactic medium (IGM). Current observations show that the IGM is significantly neutral at $z>7$, and largely ionized by $z\sim5.5$. However, most methods to measure the IGM neutral fraction are highly model-dependent, and are limited to when the volume-averaged neutral fraction of the IGM is either relatively low ($\bar{x}_{\rm HI} \lesssim 10^{-3}$) or close to unity ($\bar{x}_{\rm HI}\sim 1$). In particular, the neutral fraction evolution of the IGM at the critical redshift range of $z=6-7$ is poorly constrained. We present new constraints on $\bar{x}_{\rm HI}$ at $z\sim5.1-6.8$, by analyzing deep optical spectra of $53$ quasars at $5.73<z<7.09$. We derive model-independent upper limits on the neutral hydrogen fraction based on the fraction of "dark" pixels identified in the Lyman $α$ (Ly$α$) and Lyman $β$ (Ly$β$) forests, without any assumptions on the IGM model or the intrinsic shape of the quasar continuum. They are the first model-independent constraints on the IGM neutral hydrogen fraction at $z\sim6.2-6.8$ using quasar absorption measurements. Our results give upper limits of $\bar{x}_{\rm HI}(z=6.3) < 0.79\pm0.04$ (1$σ$), $\bar{x}_{\rm HI} (z=6.5) < 0.87\pm0.03$ (1$σ$), and $\bar{x}_{\rm HI} (z=6.7) < 0.94^{+0.06}_{-0.09}$ (1$σ$). The dark pixel fractions at $z>6.1$ are consistent with the redshift evolution of the neutral fraction of the IGM derived from the Planck 2018.

We present a study of the mass-metallicity relation (MZR) of 51 dwarf galaxies ($M_\star\approx 10^{6.5} - 10^{9.5}~M_\odot$) at $z = 2-3$ from the Abell 2744 and SMACS J0723-3732 galaxy cluster fields. These dwarf galaxies are identified and confirmed by deep JWST/NIRISS imaging and slitless grism spectroscopic observations. By taking advantage of the superior performance of JWST and the gravitational lensing effect, we extend the previous MZR relation at $z=2-3$ to a much lower mass regime down by $\approx$ 2.5 orders of magnitude as compared with previous studies. We find that the MZR has a shallower slope at the low-mass end ($M_\star<10^{9}~M_\odot$), with a slope turnover point of $\approx$ $10^9~M_\odot$. This implies that the dominating feedback processes in dwarf galaxies may be different from that in massive galaxies. From $z=3$ to $z=2$, the metallicity of the dwarf galaxies is enhanced by $\approx0.09$ dex for a given stellar mass, consistent with the mild evolution found in galaxies with higher mass. Furthermore, we confirm the existence of a fundamental metallicity relation (FMR) between the gas-phase metallicity, stellar mass, and star formation rate in dwarf galaxies at $z=2-3$. Our derived FMR, which has no significant redshift evolution, can be used as a benchmark to understand the origin of the anti-correlation between the SFR and metallicity of dwarf galaxies in the high-$z$ Universe.

Supernovae and their remnants provide energetic feedback to the ambient interstellar medium (ISM), which is often distributed in multiple gas phases. Among them, warm molecular hydrogen (H$_2$) often dominates the cooling of the shocked molecular ISM, which has been observed with the H$_2$ emission lines at near-infrared wavelengths. Such studies, however, were either limited in narrow filter imaging or sparsely sampled mid-infrared spectroscopic observations with relatively poor angular resolutions. Here we present near-infrared ($H$- and $K$-band) spectroscopic mosaic observations towards the A, B, C, and G regions of the supernova remnant (SNR) IC 443, with the K-band Multi-Object Spectrograph (KMOS) onboard the Very Large Telescope (VLT). We detected 20 ro-vibrational transitions of H$_2$, one H line (Br$γ$), and two [Fe II] lines, which dominate broadband images at both $H$- and $K$-band. The spatial distribution of H$_2$ lines at all regions are clumpy on scales from $\sim 0.1$ pc down to $\sim 0.008$ pc. The fitted excitation temperature of H$_2$ is between 1500 K and 2500 K, indicating warm shocked gas in these regions. The multi-gas-phase comparison shows stratified shock structures in all regions, which explains the co-existence of multiple types of shocks in the same regions. Last, we verify the candidates of young stellar objects previously identified in these regions with our spectroscopic data, and find none of them are associated with young stars. This sets challenges to the previously proposed scenario of triggered star formation by SNR shocks in IC~443.

Its observing capabilities include a wide field (1 square arcmin), ground layer AO mode (WFM-AO) and a narrow field (7.5"x7.5"), laser tomography AO mode (NFM-AO). The latter has had several upgrades in the 4 years since commissioning, including an optimisation of the control matrices for the AO system and a new sub-electron noise detector for its infra-red low order wavefront sensor. We set out to quantify the NFM-AO system performance by analysing $\sim$230 spectrophotometric standard star observations taken over the last 3 years. To this end we expand upon previous work, designed to facilitate analysis of the WFM-AO system performance. We briefly describe the framework that will provide a user friendly, semi-automated way for system performance monitoring during science operations. We provide the results of our performance analysis, chiefly through the measured Strehl ratio and full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the core of the point spread function (PSF) using two PSF models, and correlations with atmospheric conditions. These results will feed into a range of applications, including providing a more accurate prediction of the system performance as implemented in the exposure time calculator, and the associated optimization of the scientific output for a given set of limiting atmospheric conditions.

Direct observations of low-mass, low-metallicity galaxies at $z\gtrsim4$ provide an indispensable opportunity for detailed inspection of the ionization radiation, gas flow, and metal enrichment in sources similar to those that reionized the Universe. Combining the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), VLT/MUSE, and ALMA, we present detailed observations of a strongly lensed, low-mass ($\approx 10^{7.6}$ ${\rm M}_\odot$) galaxy at $z=3.98$ (also see Vanzella et al. 2022). We identify strong narrow nebular emission, including CIV $λ\lambda1548,1550$, HeII $\lambda1640$, OIII] $λ\lambda1661,1666$, [NeIII] $\lambda3868$, [OII] $\lambda3727$, and Balmer series of Hydrogen from this galaxy, indicating a metal-poor HII region ($\lesssim 0.12\ {\rm Z}_\odot$) powered by massive stars. Further, we detect a metal-enriched damped Ly$α$ system (DLA) associated with the galaxy with the HI column density of $N_{\rm{HI}}\approx 10^{21.8}$ cm$^{-2}$. The metallicity of the associated DLA may reach the super solar metallicity (${\gtrsim Z}_\odot$). Moreover, thanks to JWST and gravitational lensing, we present the resolved UV slope ($β$) map at the spatial resolution of $\approx 100$ pc at $z=4$, with steep UV slopes reaching $β\approx -2.5$ around three star-forming clumps. Combining with low-redshift analogs, our observations suggest that low-mass, low-metallicity galaxies, which dominate reionization, could be surrounded by a high covering fraction of the metal-enriched, neutral-gaseous clouds. This implies that the metal enrichment of low-mass galaxies is highly efficient, and further support that in low-mass galaxies, only a small fraction of ionizing radiation can escape through the interstellar or circumgalactic channels with low column-density neutral gas.

Spiral arms serve crucial purposes in star formation and galaxy evolution. In this paper, we report the identification of A2744-DSG-$z3$, a dusty, multiarm spiral galaxy at $z=3.059$ using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) NIRISS imaging and grism spectroscopy. A2744-DSG-$z3$ was discovered as a gravitationally lensed sub-millimeter galaxy with ALMA. This is the most distant stellar spiral structure seen thus far, consistent with cosmological simulations which suggest $z\approx3$ as the epoch when spirals emerge. Thanks to the gravitational lensing and excellent spatial resolution of JWST, the spiral arms are resolved with a spatial resolution of $\approx290$\,pc. Based on SED fitting, the spiral galaxy has a de-lensed star formation rate of $85\pm30 \ M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$, and a stellar mass of $\approx10^{10.6}\ M_{\odot}$, indicating that A2744-DSG-$z3$ is a main-sequence galaxy. After fitting the spiral arms, we find a stellar effective radius ($R_{e, \rm{star}}$) of $5.0\pm1.5$ kpc. Combing with ALMA measurements, we find that the effective radii ratio between dust and stars is $\approx0.4$, similar to {those} of massive SFGs at $z\sim2$, indicating a compact dusty core in A2744-DSG-$z3$. Moreover, this galaxy appears to be living in a group environment: including A2744-DSG-$z3$, at least three galaxies at $z=3.05 - 3.06$ {are} spectroscopically confirmed by JWST/NIRISS and ALMA, residing within a lensing-corrected projected scale of $\approx 70$ kpc. This, along with the asymmetric brightness profile, further suggests that the spiral arms may be triggered by minor merger events at $z\gtrsim3$.

With the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) observation of the nebula, we find enhanced OIII emission at locations spatially coincident with clusters of stars and the central X-ray source, suggesting that photoionization in addition to shock-ionization plays an important role in powering the nebula. The X-ray luminosity of the ULX and the number of massive stars in the nebula region can account for the required ionizing luminosity derived with MAPPINGS V, which also confirms that pure shocks cannot explain the observed emission line ratios.

We analyze Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer observations of nine low-redshift (z < 0.1) Palomar-Green quasar host galaxies to investigate the spatial distribution and kinematics of the warm, ionized interstellar medium, with the goal of searching for and constraining the efficiency of active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback. After separating the bright AGN from the starlight and nebular emission, we use pixel-wise, kpc-scale diagnostics to determine the underlying excitation mechanism of the line emission, and we measure the kinematics of the narrow-line region (NLR) to estimate the physical properties of the ionized outflows. The radial size of the NLR correlates with the AGN luminosity, reaching scales of $\sim 5\,$kpc and beyond. The geometry of the NLR is well-represented by a projected biconical structure, suggesting that the AGN radiation preferably escapes through the ionization cone. We find enhanced velocity dispersions ($\sim 100\,$km$\,$s$^{-1}$) traced by the H$α$ emission line in localized zones within the ionization cones. Interpreting these kinematic features as signatures of interaction between an AGN-driven ionized gas outflow and the host galaxy interstellar medium, we derive mass outflow rates of $\sim 0.008-1.6\, M_\odot \,$yr$^{-1}$ and kinetic injection rates of $\sim 10^{39}-10^{42} \,$erg$\,$s$^{-1}$, which yield extremely low coupling efficiencies of $\lesssim 10^{-3}$. These findings add to the growing body of recent observational evidence that AGN feedback is highly ineffective in the host galaxies of nearby AGNs.

Optical and near-infrared spectroscopy reveals broad MgII, H-beta, H-alpha, and Pa-beta emission lines, from which we measure a black hole mass of log10(M_BH/M_Sun) = 9.4 +/- 0.5. With its high luminosity, L_bol = (4.7 +/- 1.0) * 10^47 erg/s or M_i(z=2) = -29.74 mag (AB), we estimate an Eddington ratio of ~1.4. As the most luminous quasar known over the last ~9 Gyr of cosmic history, having a luminosity 8 times greater than 3C 273, the source offers a range of potential follow-up opportunities.

We present an analysis of physical properties of 34 [O III] emission-line galaxies (ELGs) at z=3.254$\pm$0.029 in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South (ECDFS). These ELGs are selected from deep narrow H2S(1) and broad Ks imaging of 383 arcmin$^{2}$ obtained with CFHT/WIRCam. We construct spectral energy distributions (SEDs) from U to Ks to derive the physical properties of ELGs. These [O III] ELGs are identified as starburst galaxies with strong [O III] lines of L([O III]) ~ 10$^{42.6}$ - 10$^{44.2}$ erg s$^{-1}$, and have stellar masses of M* ~ 10$^{9.0}$-10$^{10.6}$ M$_\odot$ and star formation rates of ~ 10-210 M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$. Our results show that 24% of our sample galaxies are dusty with Av > 1 mag and EW(OIII)$_{rest}$ ~ 70-500 $Å$, which are often missed in optically selected [O III] ELG samples. Their rest-frame UV and optical morphologies from HST/ACS and HST/WFC3 deep imaging reveal that these [O III] ELGs are mostly multiple-component systems (likely mergers) or compact. And 20% of them are nearly invisible in the rest-frame UV owing to heavy dust attenuation. Interestingly, we find that our samples reside in an overdensity consisting of two components: one southeast (SE) with an overdensity factor of $δ_{gal}$ ~ 41 over a volume of 13$^{3}$ cMpc$^{3}$ and the other northwest (NW) with $δ_{gal}$ ~ 38 over a volume of 10$^{3}$ cMpc$^{3}$. The two overdense substructures are expected to be virialized at z=0 with a total mass of ~ 1.1 x 10$^{15}$ M$_\odot$ and ~ 4.8 x 10$^{14}$ M$_\odot$, and probably merge into a Coma-like galaxy cluster.

We present a new investigation of the intergalactic medium (IGM) near reionization using dark gaps in the Lyman-$β$ (Ly$β$) forest. With its lower optical depth, Ly$β$ offers a potentially more sensitive probe to any remaining neutral gas compared to commonly used Ly$α$ line. We identify dark gaps in the Ly$β$ forest using spectra of 42 QSOs at $z_{\rm em}>5.5$, including new data from the XQR-30 VLT Large Programme. Approximately $40\%$ of these QSO spectra exhibit dark gaps longer than $10h^{-1}{\rm Mpc}$ at $z\simeq5.8$. By comparing the results to predictions from simulations, we find that the data are broadly consistent both with models where fluctuations in the Ly$α$ forest are caused solely by ionizing ultraviolet background (UVB) fluctuations and with models that include large neutral hydrogen patches at $z<6$ due to a late end to reionization. Of particular interest is a very long ($L=28h^{-1}{\rm Mpc}$) and dark ($τ_{\rm eff} \gtrsim 6$) gap persisting down to $z\simeq 5.5$ in the Ly$β$ forest of the $z_{\rm}=5.85$ QSO PSO J025$-$11. This gap may support late reionization models with a volume-weighted average neutral hydrogen fraction of $ \langle x_{\rm HI}\rangle \gtrsim 5\%$ by $z=5.6$. Finally, we infer constraints on $\langle x_{\rm HI}\rangle$ over $5.5 \lesssim z \lesssim 6.0$ based on the observed Ly$β$ dark gap length distribution and a conservative relationship between gap length and neutral fraction derived from simulations. We find $\langle x_{\rm HI}\rangle \leq 0.05$, 0.17, and 0.29 at $z\simeq 5.55$, 5.75, and 5.95, respectively. These constraints are consistent with models where reionization ends significantly later than $z = 6$.

Deep neural networks (DNNs) have made great progress in various fields. In particular, the quantized neural network is a promising technique making DNNs compatible on resource-limited devices for memory and computation saving. In this paper, we mainly consider a non-convex minimization model with three blocks to train quantized DNNs and propose a new stochastic three-block alternating minimization (STAM) algorithm to solve it. We develop a convergence theory for the STAM algorithm and obtain an $ε$-stationary point with optimal convergence rate $\mathcal{O}(ε^{-4})$. Furthermore, we apply our STAM algorithm to train DNNs with relaxed binary weights. The experiments are carried out on three different network structures, namely VGG-11, VGG-16 and ResNet-18. These DNNs are trained using two different data sets, CIFAR-10 and CIFAR-100, respectively. We compare our STAM algorithm with some classical efficient algorithms for training quantized neural networks. The test accuracy indicates the effectiveness of STAM algorithm for training relaxed binary quantization DNNs.

The elemental abundances in the broad-line regions of high-redshift quasars trace the chemical evolution in the nuclear regions of massive galaxies in the early universe. In this work, we study metallicity-sensitive broad emission-line flux ratios in rest-frame UV spectra of 25 high-redshift (5.8 < z < 7.5) quasars observed with the VLT/X-shooter and Gemini/GNIRS instruments, ranging over $\log(M_{\rm{BH}}/M_{\odot})= 8.4-9.8$ in black hole mass and $\log(L_{\rm{bol}}/\rm{erg\, s}^{-1})= 46.7-47.7$ in bolometric luminosity. We fit individual spectra and composites generated by binning across quasar properties: bolometric luminosity, black hole mass, and blueshift of the \civ\, line, finding no redshift evolution in the emission-line ratios by comparing our high-redshift quasars to lower-redshift (2.0 < z < 5.0) results presented in the literature. Using Cloudy-based locally optimally-emitting cloud photoionisation model relations between metallicity and emission-line flux ratios, we find the observable properties of the broad emission lines to be consistent with emission from gas clouds with metallicity that are at least 2-4 times solar. Our high-redshift measurements also confirm that the blueshift of the CIV emission line is correlated with its equivalent width, which influences line ratios normalised against CIV. When accounting for the CIV blueshift, we find that the rest-frame UV emission-line flux ratios do not correlate appreciably with the black hole mass or bolometric luminosity.

We report the first spatially resolved measurements of gas-phase metallicity radial gradients in star-forming galaxies in overdense environments at $z\gtrsim2$. The spectroscopic data are acquired by the \mg\ survey, a Hubble Space Telescope (HST) cycle-28 medium program. This program is obtaining 45 orbits of WFC3/IR grism spectroscopy in the density peak regions of three massive galaxy protoclusters (BOSS 1244, BOSS 1542 and BOSS 1441) at $z=2-3$. Our sample in the BOSS 1244 field consists of 20 galaxies with stellar-mass ranging from $10^{9.0}$ to $10^{10.3}$ \Msun\ , star formation rate (SFR) from 10 to 240 \Msun\,yr$^{-1}$, and global gas-phase metallicity (\oh) from 8.2 to 8.6. At $1σ$ confidence level, 2/20 galaxies in our sample show positive (inverted) gradients -- the relative abundance of oxygen increasing with galactocentric radius, opposite the usual trend. Furthermore, 1/20 shows negative gradients and 17/20 are consistent with flat gradients. This high fraction of flat/inverted gradients is uncommon in simulations and previous observations conducted in blank fields at similar redshifts. To understand this, we investigate the correlations among various observed properties of our sample galaxies. We find an anticorrelation between metallicity gradient and global metallicity of our galaxies residing in extreme overdensities, and a marked deficiency of metallicity in our massive galaxies as compared to their coeval field counterparts. We conclude that the cold-mode gas accretion plays an active role in shaping the chemical evolution of galaxies in the protocluster environments, diluting their central chemical abundance, and flattening/inverting their metallicity gradients.

The majority ($\sim$65\%) of the galaxies come from the HALO7D survey, with the remainder from the DEEPwinds program. This catalog includes redshifts for 646 dwarf galaxies with $\log(M_{\star}/M_{\odot}) < 9.5$. 810 catalog galaxies did not have previously published spectroscopic redshifts, including 454 dwarf galaxies. HALO7D used the DEIMOS spectrograph on the Keck II telescope to take very deep (up to 32 hours exposure, with a median of $\sim$7 hours) optical spectroscopy in the COSMOS, EGS, GOODS-North, and GOODS-South CANDELS fields, and in some areas outside CANDELS. We compare our redshift results to existing spectroscopic and photometric redshifts in these fields, finding only a 1\% rate of discrepancy with other spectroscopic redshifts. We measure a small increase in median photometric redshift error (from 1.0\% to 1.3\%) and catastrophic outlier rate (from 3.5\% to 8\%) with decreasing stellar mass. We obtained successful redshift fits for 75\% of massive galaxies, and demonstrate a similar 70-75\% successful redshift measurement rate in $8.5 < \log(M_{\star}/M_{\odot}) < 9.5$ galaxies, suggesting similar survey sensitivity in this low-mass range. We describe the redshift, mass, and color-magnitude distributions of the catalog galaxies, finding HALO7D galaxies representative of CANDELS galaxies up to \textit{i}-band magnitudes of 25. The catalogs presented will enable studies of star formation (SF), the mass-metallicity relation, SF-morphology relations, and other properties of the $z\sim0.7$ dwarf galaxy population.

While the slope of the dust attenuation curve ($δ$) is found to correlate with effective dust attenuation ($A_V$) as obtained through spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting, it remains unknown how the fitting degeneracies shape this relation. We examine the degeneracy effects by fitting SEDs of a sample of local star-forming galaxies (SFGs) selected from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly survey, in conjunction with mock galaxy SEDs of known attenuation parameters. A well-designed declining starburst star formation history is adopted to generate model SED templates with intrinsic UV slope ($β_0$) spanning over a reasonably wide range. The best-fitting $β_0$ for our sample SFGs shows a wide coverage, dramatically differing from the limited range of $β_0<-2.2$ for a starburst of constant star formation. Our results show that strong degeneracies between $β_0$, $δ$, and $A_V$ in the SED fitting induce systematic biases leading to a false $A_V$--$δ$ correlation. Our simulation tests reveal that this relationship can be well reproduced even when a flat $A_V$--$δ$ relation is taken to build the input model galaxy SEDs. The variations in best-fitting $δ$ are dominated by the fitting errors. We show that assuming a starburst with constant star formation in SED fitting will result in a steeper attenuation curve, smaller degeneracy errors, and a stronger $A_V$--$δ$ relation. Our findings confirm that the $A_V$--$δ$ relation obtained through SED fitting is likely driven by the systematic biases induced by the fitting degeneracies between $β_0$, $δ$, and $A_V$.

The gas supply from the cosmic web is the key to sustain star formation in galaxies. It remains to be explored how the cosmic large-scale structure (LSS) effects on galaxy evolution at given local environments. We examine galaxy specific star formation rate as a function of local density in a LSS at $z=0.735$ in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South. The LSS is mapped by 732 galaxies with $R<24$\,mag and redshift at $0.72\le z \le 0.75$ collected from the literature and our spectroscopic observations with Magellan/IMACS, consisting of five galaxy clusters/groups and surrounding filaments over an area of $23.9 \times22.7$\,co-moving\,Mpc$^2$. The spread of spectroscopic redshifts corresponds a velocity dispersion of 494\,km\,s$^{-1}$, indicating the LSS likely to be a thin sheet with a galaxy density $\gtrsim 3.9$ times that of the general field. These clusters/groups in this LSS mostly exhibit elongated morphologies and multiple components connected with surrounding filaments. Strikingly, we find that star-forming galaxies in the LSS keep star formation at the same level as field, and show no dependence on local density but stellar mass. Meanwhile, an increasing fraction of quiescent galaxies is detected at increasing local density in both the LSS and the field, consistent with the expectation that galaxy mass and local dense environment hold the key to quench star formation. Combined together, we conclude that the cosmic environment of the LSS overtakes the local environment in remaining galaxy star formation to the level of the field.

We report the results of near-infrared spectroscopic observations of 37 quasars in the redshift range $6.3< z\le7.64$, including 32 quasars at $z>6.5$, forming the largest quasar near-infrared spectral sample at this redshift. The spectra, taken with Keck, Gemini, VLT, and Magellan, allow investigations of central black hole mass and quasar rest-frame ultraviolet spectral properties. The black hole masses derived from the MgII emission lines are in the range $(0.3-3.6)\times10^{9}\,M_{\odot}$, which requires massive seed black holes with masses $\gtrsim10^{3-4}\,M_{\odot}$, assuming Eddington accretion since $z=30$. The Eddington ratio distribution peaks at $λ_{\rm Edd}\sim0.8$ and has a mean of 1.08, suggesting high accretion rates for these quasars. The CIV - MgII emission line velocity differences in our sample show an increase of CIV blueshift towards higher redshift, but the evolutionary trend observed from this sample is weaker than the previous results from smaller samples at similar redshift. The FeII/MgII flux ratios derived for these quasars up to $z=7.6$, compared with previous measurements at different redshifts, do not show any evidence of strong redshift evolution, suggesting metal-enriched environments in these quasars. Using this quasar sample, we create a quasar composite spectrum for $z>6.5$ quasars and find no significant redshift evolution of quasar broad emission lines and continuum slope, except for a blueshift of the CIV line. Our sample yields a strong broad absorption line quasar fraction of $\sim$24%, higher than the fractions in lower redshift quasar samples, although this could be affected by small sample statistics and selection effects.

We present a new investigation of the intergalactic medium (IGM) near the end of reionization using "dark gaps" in the Lyman-alpha (Ly$α$) forest. Using spectra of 55 QSOs at $z_{\rm em}>5.5$, including new data from the XQR-30 VLT Large Programme, we identify gaps in the Ly$α$ forest where the transmission averaged over 1 comoving $h^{-1}\,{\rm Mpc}$ bins falls below 5%. Nine ultra-long ($L > 80~h^{-1}\,{\rm Mpc}$) dark gaps are identified at $z<6$. In addition, we quantify the fraction of QSO spectra exhibiting gaps longer than $30~h^{-1}\,{\rm Mpc}$, $F_{30}$, as a function of redshift. We measure $F_{30} \simeq 0.9$, 0.6, and 0.15 at $z = 6.0$, 5.8, and 5.6, respectively, with the last of these long dark gaps persisting down to $z \simeq 5.3$. Comparing our results with predictions from hydrodynamical simulations, we find that the data are consistent with models wherein reionization extends significantly below redshift six. Models wherein the IGM is essentially fully reionized that retain large-scale fluctuations in the ionizing UV background at $z \lesssim 6$ are also potentially consistent with the data. Overall, our results suggest that signature of reionization in the form of islands of neutral hydrogen and/or large-scale fluctuations in the ionizing background remain present in the IGM until at least $z \simeq 5.3$.
