Abstract:
We describe an analysis comparing the $p\bar{p}$ elastic cross section as measured by the D0 Collaboration at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV to that in $pp$ collisions as measured by the TOTEM Collaboration at 2.76, 7, 8, and 13 TeV using a model-independent approach. The TOTEM cross sections extrapolated to a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} =$ 1.96 TeV are compared with the D0 measurement in the region of the diffractive minimum and the second maximum of the $pp$ cross section. The two data sets disagree at the 3.4$σ$ level and thus provide evidence for the $t$-channel exchange of a colorless, $C$-odd gluonic compound, also known as the odderon. We combine these results with a TOTEM analysis of the same $C$-odd exchange based on the total cross section and the ratio of the real to imaginary parts of the forward elastic scattering amplitude in $pp$ scattering. The combined significance of these results is larger than 5$σ$ and is interpreted as the first observation of the exchange of a colorless, $C$-odd gluonic compound.

A new pixel detector for the CMS experiment was built in order to cope with the instantaneous luminosities anticipated for the Phase~I Upgrade of the LHC. The new CMS pixel detector provides four-hit tracking with a reduced material budget as well as new cooling and powering schemes. A new front-end readout chip mitigates buffering and bandwidth limitations, and allows operation at low comparator thresholds. In this paper, comprehensive test beam studies are presented, which have been conducted to verify the design and to quantify the performance of the new detector assemblies in terms of tracking efficiency and spatial resolution. Under optimal conditions, the tracking efficiency is $99.95\pm0.05\,\%$, while the intrinsic spatial resolutions are $4.80\pm0.25\,μ\mathrm{m}$ and $7.99\pm0.21\,μ\mathrm{m}$ along the $100\,μ\mathrm{m}$ and $150\,μ\mathrm{m}$ pixel pitch, respectively. The findings are compared to a detailed Monte Carlo simulation of the pixel detector and good agreement is found.

Pulsed red laser light with a wavelength of 672 nm is used to generate electron-hole pairs in the sensors. The induced signals are used to determine the charge collection efficiencies separately for electrons and holes drifting through the sensor. The effective trapping rates are extracted by comparing the results to simulation. The electric field is simulated using Synopsys device simulation assuming two effective defects. The generation and drift of charge carriers are simulated in an independent simulation based on PixelAV. The effective trapping rates are determined from the measured charge collection efficiencies and the simulated and measured time-resolved current pulses are compared. The effective trapping rates determined for both electrons and holes are about 50% smaller than those obtained using standard extrapolations of studies at low fluences and suggests an improved tracker performance over initial expectations.

The combined analysis produces the first observation of the $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-$ decay, with a statistical significance exceeding six standard deviations, and the best measurement of its branching fraction so far. Furthermore, evidence for the $B^0\toμ^+μ^-$ decay is obtained with a statistical significance of three standard deviations. The branching fraction measurements are statistically compatible with SM predictions and impose stringent constraints on several theories beyond the SM.

Heavy t-tbar resonances (Z' bosons) are predicted by several theories that go beyond the standard model. We consider scenarios in which each top quark decays leptonically, either to an electron or a muon, and the data sets correspond to integrated luminosities of \int L dt = 300 /fb and \int L dt = 3000 /fb. We present the expected 5-sigma discovery potential for a Z' resonance as well as the expected upper limits at 95% C.L. on the Z' production cross section and mass in the absence of a discovery.

We summarize and combine direct measurements of the mass of the $W$ boson in $\sqrt{s} = 1.96 \text{TeV}$ proton-antiproton collision data collected by CDF and D0 experiments at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. Earlier measurements from CDF and D0 are combined with the two latest, more precise measurements: a CDF measurement in the electron and muon channels using data corresponding to $2.2 \mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, and a D0 measurement in the electron channel using data corresponding to $4.3 \mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. The resulting Tevatron average for the mass of the $W$ boson is $\MW = 80\,387 \pm 16 \text{MeV}$. Including measurements obtained in electron-positron collisions at LEP yields the most precise value of $\MW = 80\,385 \pm 15 \text{MeV}$.

The top quark is the heaviest known elementary particle, with a mass about 40 times larger than the mass of its isospin partner, the bottom quark. It decays almost 100% of the time to a $W$ boson and a bottom quark. Using top-antitop pairs at the Tevatron proton-antiproton collider, the CDF and {\dzero} collaborations have measured the top quark's mass in different final states for integrated luminosities of up to 5.8 fb$^{-1}$. This paper reports on a combination of these measurements that results in a more precise value of the mass than any individual decay channel can provide. It describes the treatment of the systematic uncertainties and their correlations. The mass value determined is $173.18 \pm 0.56 \thinspace ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.75 \thinspace ({\rm syst})$ GeV or $173.18 \pm 0.94$ GeV, which has a precision of $\pm 0.54%$, making this the most precise determination of the top quark mass.

For $|t|<0.6 GeV^2$, dσ/dt is described by an exponential function of the form $Ae^{-b|t|}$ with a slope parameter $ b = 16.86 \pm 0.10(stat) \pm 0.20(syst) GeV^{-2}$. A change in slope is observed at $|t| \approx 0.6 GeV^2$, followed by a more gradual |t| dependence with increasing values of |t|.

Combining measurements that simultaneously determine the fractions of W bosons with longitudinal (f0) and right-handed (f+) helicities, we find f0 = 0.722 \pm 0.081 [\pm 0.062 (stat.) \pm 0.052 (syst.)] and f+ = -0.033 \pm 0.046 [\pm 0.034 (stat.) \pm 0.031 (syst.)]. The result is Gamma_t = 1.99 +0.69 -0.55 GeV, which translates to a top-quark lifetime of tau_t = (3.3 +1.3 -0.9) x 10^-25 s. Assuming a high mass fourth generation b' quark and unitarity of the four-generation quark-mixing matrix, we set the first upper limit on |Vtb'| < 0.63 at 95% C.L.

Top mass determination in leptonic final states with J/psi

Taking advantage of large top production rates at the LHC, the leptonic final states with J/psi are explored for a precise determination of the top quark mass. The top is partially reconstructed by combining the isolated lepton from the W with the J/psi from the decays of the corresponding b-quark. The method relies, to a large extent, on the proper Monte-Carlo description of top production and decay. The main emphasis is put on the expected systematics uncertainties. Mass measurement accuracy is dominated by the current understanding of theoretical uncertainties which result in a systematic error of <~1 GeV.

Abstract:
The production of $Υ$ mesons in fixed target $pN$ collisions is considered. It is shown that Non-Relativistic QCD predicts $Υ$ states to be produced with sizeable transverse polarization. The possibility of a measurement of the $Υ$ polarization at the HERA-$B$ experiment is discussed.

This work summarizes and puts in an overall perspective studies done within CMS concerning the discovery potential for squarks and gluinos, sleptons, charginos and neutralinos, SUSY dark matter, lightest Higgs, sparticle mass determination methods and the detector design optimisation in view of SUSY searches. It represents the status of our understanding of these subjects as of Summer 1997.
As a benchmark model we used the minimal supergravity-inspired super- symmetric standard model (mSUGRA) with a stable LSP. Discovery of SUSY at the LHC should be relatively straightforward. It may occur through the observation of a large excesses of events in missing E_T + jets, or with one or more isolated leptons. An excess of trilepton events or of isolated dileptons with E_T^miss, exhibiting a characteristic signature in the l^+l^- invariant mass distribution could also be the first manifestation of SUSY production. Squark and gluino production may represent a copious source of Higgs bosons through cascade decays. The lightest SUSY Higgs h->bbbar may be reconstructed with a signal/background ratio of order 1. The lightest supersymmetric particle of SUSY models with conserved R-parity represents a very good candidate for the cosmological dark matter. The region of parameter space where this is true is well-covered by our searches, at least for tan(beta)=2.
If supersymmetry exists at electroweak scale it could hardly escape detection in CMS, and the study of supersymmetry will form a central part of our physics program.

The performance of a scintillating fiber detector prototype for tracking under high rate conditions is investigated. A spatial resolution of about100 micron is aimed for the detector. Further demands are low occupancy and radiation hardness up to 1 Mrad/year. Fibers with different radii and different wavelengths of the scintillation light from different producers have been extensively tested concerning light output, attenuation length and radiation hardness, with and without coupling them to light guides of different length and diameter.
In a testrun at a 3 GeV electron beam the space dependent efficiency and spatial resolution of fiber bundels were measured by means of two external reference detectors with a precision of 50 micron. The light output profile across fiber roads has been determined with the same accuracy.
Different technologies were adopted for the construction of tracker modules consisting of 14 layers of 0.5 mm fibers and 0.7 mm pitch. A winding technology provides reliable results to produce later fiber modules of about 25 cm x 25 cm area.
We conclude that on the basis of these results a fiber tracker for high rate conditions can be built.

One of the main motivations of experiments at the LHC is to search for SUSY particles. The talk is based on recent analyses, performed by CMS Collaboration, within the framework of the Supergravity motivated minimal SUSY extension of the Standard Model. The emphasis is put on leptonic channels. The strategies for obtaining experimental signatures for strongly and weakly interacting sparticles productions, as well as examples of determination of SUSY masses and model parameters are discussed. The domain of parameter space where SUSY can be discovered is investigated. Results show, that if SUSY is of relevance at Electro-Weak scale it could hardly escape detection at LHC.
