Abstract:

This work proposes a new avenue in the search for CP-violating odd-electric and even-magnetic nuclear moments. A promising candidate to find such moments in the ground state is the quadrupole-deformed and octupole-correlated nucleus 227-actinium. In this nucleus, the 27.4-keV $E1$~transition that connects the $3/2^+$ parity-doublet partner and the $3/2^-$ ground state is perfectly suited to apply the sensitive technique of recoil-free selfabsorption, commonly known as Mössbauer spectroscopy. In this experimental approach, the lifetime of the $3/2^+$ upper parity-doublet partner allows an estimate of the lower limit of $ΔE = 2\cdot Γ_γ$= $23.7(1) \times 10^{-9}$ eV for the achievable energy resolution to be made. This resolution must be exceeded by the interaction of a CP-violating moment and the corresponding multipole moment of the field distribution in the lattice. This work presents the first ideas for patterns caused by CP-violating moments on the expected quadrupole splitting and nuclear Zeeman effect.

[Background] Photon strength functions are an important ingredient in calculations relevant for the nucleosynthesis of heavy elements. The relation to the photoabsorption cross section allows to experimentally constrain photon strength functions by investigating the photo-response of atomic nuclei. [Purpose] We determine the photoresponse of $^{66}$Zn in the energy region of 5.6 MeV to 9.9 MeV and analyze the contribution of the "elastic" decay channel back to the ground state. In addition, for the elastic channel electric and magnetic dipole transitions were separated. [Methods] Nuclear resonance fluorescence experiments were performed using a linearly-polarized quasi-monoenergetic photon beam at the High Intensity $γ$-ray Source. Photon beam energies from 5.6 to 9.9 MeV with an energy spread of about 3% were selected in steps of 200-300 keV. Two High Purity Germanium detectors were used for the subsequent $γ$-ray spectroscopy. [Results] Full photoabsorption cross sections are extracted from the data making use of the monoenergetic character of the photon beam. For the ground-state decay channel, the average contribution of electric and magnetic dipole strengths is disentangled. The average branching ratio back to the ground state is determined as well. [Conclusions] The new results indicate lower cross sections when compared to the values extracted from a former experiment using bremsstrahlung on $^{66}$Zn. In the latter, the average branching ratio to the ground state is estimated from statistical-model calculations in order to analyze the data. Corresponding estimates from statistical-model calculations underestimate this branching ratio compared to the values extracted from the present analysis, which would partly explain the high cross sections determined from the bremsstrahlung data.

Branching ratios extracted from $β$ decay allow the absolute $E1$ excitation strength to be determined for levels populated in both reactions. The combined data represents a comprehensive approach to the wavefunction of $1^-$ levels below the $Q_β$ value, which are investigated in the theoretical approach of the Quasiparticle Phonon Model. This study clarifies the nuclear structure properties associated with the enhanced population of high-lying levels in the $^{96}$Y$_{gs}$ $β$ decay, one of the three most important contributors to the high-energy reactor antineutrino spectrum.

There is a large body of evidence that atomic nuclei can undergo octupole distortion and assume the shape of a pear. This phenomenon is important for measurements of electric-dipole moments of atoms, which would indicate CP violation and hence probe physics beyond the standard model of particle physics. Isotopes of both radon and radium have been identified as candidates for such measurements. Here, we have observed the low-lying quantum states in $^{224}$Rn and $^{226}$Rn by accelerating beams of these radioactive nuclei. We report here additional states not assigned in our 2019 publication. We show that radon isotopes undergo octupole vibrations but do not possess static pear-shapes in their ground states. We conclude that radon atoms provide less favourable conditions for the enhancement of a measurable atomic electric-dipole moment.

In order to investigate the nature of octupole collectivity in radium isotopes, electric octupole ($E3$) matrix elements have been determined for transitions in $^{222,228}$Ra nuclei using the method of sub-barrier, multi-step Coulomb excitation. Beams of the radioactive radium isotopes were provided by the HIE-ISOLDE facility at CERN. The observed pattern of $E$3 matrix elements for different nuclear transitions is explained by describing $^{222}$Ra as pear-shaped with stable octupole deformation, while $^{228}$Ra behaves like an octupole vibrator.

It is now well established that atomic nuclei composed of certain combinations of protons and neutrons can adopt reflection-asymmetric, or octupole-deformed, shapes at low excitation energy. These nuclei show promise in the search for a permanent atomic electric dipole moment, the existence of which has implications for physics beyond the Standard Model. Theoretical studies have suggested that certain isotopes of thorium may have the largest octupole deformation. However, due to experimental challenges, the extent of the octupole collectivity in the low-energy states in these thorium nuclei has not yet been demonstrated. This paper reports measurements of the lifetimes of low-energy states in 228Th (Z = 90) undertaken using the mirror symmetric centroid difference method, which is a direct electronic fast-timing technique. Lifetime measurements of the low-lying Jp = 1- and 3- states, which are the first for a thorium isotope, have allowed the B(E1) rates and the intrinsic dipole moment to be determined. The results are in agreement with those of previous theoretical calculations allowing the extent of the octupole deformation of 228Th to be estimated. This study indicates that the nuclei 229Th and 229Pa (Z = 91) may be good candidates for the search for a permanent atomic electric dipole moment.

The first experimental investigation of the near-threshold cross section for incoherent $π^-$ photoproduction on the deuteron $γ$ d -> $π^-$ pp is presented. The experimental technique involved detection of the ~131 MeV gamma ray resulting from the radiative capture of photoproduced $π^-$ in the target. The total cross section has been measured using an unpolarized tagged-photon beam, a liquid-deuterium target, and three very large NaI(Tl) spectrometers. The data are compared to theoretical models that give insight into the elementary reaction $γ$ n -> $π^-$ p and pion-nucleon and nucleon-nucleon final-state interactions.

The electromagnetic polarizabilities of the nucleon are fundamental nucleon-structure observables that characterize its response to external electromagnetic fields. The neutron polarizabilities can be accessed from Compton-scattering data on light nuclear targets. Recent measurements of the differential cross section for Compton scattering on the deuteron below the pion-production threshold have decreased the uncertainties in the neutron polarizabilities, yet the proton polarizabilities remain known substantially more accurately. As the sensitivity of the cross section to the polarizabilities increases with incident photon energy, measurements above the pion threshold may offer a way for an improved determination of the neutron polarizabilities. In this article, the first measurement of the cross section for Compton scattering on the deuteron above the pion-production threshold is presented.

We present an IR study of high-redshift galaxy clusters with the MIPS camera on the Spitzer Space Telescope. Employing a sample of 42 clusters from the RCS-1 over the redshift range 0.3 < z < 1.0 and spanning an approximate range in mass of 10^{14-15} Msun, we show the number of IR-luminous galaxies in clusters above a fixed IR luminosity of 2x10^{11} Msun per unit cluster mass evolves as (1+z)^{5.1+/-1.9}. These results assume a single star forming galaxy template; the presence of AGN, and an evolution in their relative contribution to the mid-IR galaxy emission, will alter the overall number counts per cluster and their rate of evolution. We infer the total SFR per unit cluster mass and find T_SFR/M_c ~ (1+z)^{5.4+/-1.9}. This evolution can be attributed entirely to the change in the in-falling field galaxy population. The T_SFR/M_c (binned over all redshift) decreases with increasing cluster mass with a slope (T_SFR/M_c ~ M_c^{-1.5+/-0.4}) consistent with the dependence of the stellar-to-total mass per unit cluster mass seen locally. The inferred star formation seen here could produce ~5-10% of the total stellar mass in massive clusters at z = 0. Finally, we show a clear decrease in the number of IR-bright galaxies per unit optical galaxy in the cluster cores, confirming star formation continues to avoid the highest density regions of the universe at z ~ 0.75 (the average redshift of the high-redshift clusters). While several previous studies appear to show enhanced star formation in high-redshift clusters relative to the field we note that these papers have not accounted for the overall increase in galaxy or dark matter density at the location of clusters. Once this is done, clusters at z ~ 0.75 have the same or less star formation per unit mass or galaxy as the field.

We have discovered a 2.5 Mpc (projected) long filament of infrared-bright galaxies connecting two of the three ~5x10^14 Msun clusters making up the RCS 2319+00 supercluster at z=0.9. The filament is revealed in a deep Herschel Spectral and Photometric Imaging REceiver (SPIRE) map that shows 250-500um emission associated with a spectroscopically identified filament of galaxies spanning two X-ray bright cluster cores. We estimate that the total (8-1000um) infrared luminosity of the filament is Lir~5x10^12 Lsun, which, if due to star formation alone, corresponds to a total SFR 900 Msun/yr. We are witnessing the scene of the build-up of a >10^15 Msun cluster of galaxies, seen prior to the merging of three massive components, each of which already contains a population of red, passive galaxies that formed at z>2. The infrared filament demonstrates that significant stellar mass assembly is taking place in the moderate density, dynamically active circumcluster environments of the most massive clusters at high-redshift, and this activity is concomitant with the hierarchical build-up of large scale structure.

We present a submillimetre survey of seven high-z galaxy clusters (0.64<z<1.0) using the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) at 850 and 450 um. The targets, of similar richness and redshift, are selected from the Red-sequence Cluster Survey (RCS). We use this sample to investigate the apparent excess of submillimetre source counts in the direction of cluster fields compared to blank fields. The sample consists of three galaxy clusters that exhibit multiple optical arcs due to strong gravitational lensing, and a control group of four clusters with no apparent strong lensing. A tentative excess of 2.7-sigma is seen in the number density of submillimetre luminous galaxies (SMGs) within the lensing cluster fields compared to that in the control group. Ancillary observations at radio, mid-infrared, optical, and X-ray wavelengths allow for the identification of counterparts to many of the SMGs. Utilizing photometric redshifts, we conclude that at least three of the galaxies within the lensing fields have redshifts consistent with the clusters and implied infrared luminosities of ~10^12 Lsol. The existence of SMG cluster members may therefore be boosting source counts in the lensing cluster fields, which might be an effect of the dynamical state of those clusters. However, we find that the removal of potential cluster members from the counts analysis does not entirely eliminate the difference between the cluster samples. We also investigate possible occurrences of lensing between background SMGs and lower-z optical galaxies, though further observations are required to make any conclusive claims. Although the excess counts between the two cluster samples have not been unambiguously accounted for, these results warrant caution for interpreting submillimetre source counts in cluster fields and point source contamination for Sunyaev-Zel'dovich surveys. A broad continuum excess in the near-infrared, peaking in the rest-frame at 2-5 micron, is detected in a spectroscopic sample of 88 galaxies at 0.5<z<2.0 taken from the Gemini Deep Deep Survey. Line emission from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) at 3.3 micron alone cannot explain the excess, which can be fit by a spectral component consisting of a template of PAH emission lines superposed on a modified blackbody of temperature T~850 K. The luminosity of this near-infrared excess emission at 3 micron is found to be correlated with the star formation rate of the galaxy. The origin of the near-infrared excess is explored by examining similar excesses observed locally in massive star forming regions, reflection and planetary nebulae, post-asymptotic giant branch stars and in the galactic cirrus. We also consider the potential contribution from dust heated around low-luminosity active galactic nuclei. We conclude that the most likely explanation for the 2-5 micron excess is the contribution from circumstellar disks around massive young stellar objects seen in the integrated light of high-redshift galaxies. Assuming circumstellar disks extend down to lower masses, as they do in our own Galaxy, the excess emission presents us with an exciting opportunity to measure the formation rate of planetary systems at cosmic epochs before our own solar system formed.
