Recently, social debates have been marked by increased polarization of social groups. Such polarization not only implies that groups cannot reach a consensus on fundamental questions but also materializes in more modular social spaces/networks that further amplify the risks of polarization in less polarizing topics. How can network adaptation bridge different communities when individuals reveal homophilic or heterophilic social rewiring preferences? Here, we consider information diffusion processes that capture a continuum from simple to complex contagion processes. We use a computational model to understand how fast and to what extent individual rewiring preferences bridge initially weakly connected communities and how likely it is for them to reach a consensus. We show that homophilic and heterophilic rewiring have different impacts depending on the type of opinion spread. First, in the case of complex opinion diffusion, we show that even polarized social networks can reach a population-wide consensus without reshaping their underlying network. When polarized social structures amplify opinion polarization, heterophilic rewiring preferences play a key role in creating bridges between communities and facilitating a population-wide consensus. Secondly, in the case of simple opinion diffusion, homophilic rewiring preferences are more capable of fostering consensus and avoiding a co-existence (dynamical polarization) of opinions. Hence, across a broad profile of simple and complex opinion diffusion processes, only a mix of heterophilic and homophilic rewiring preferences avoids polarization and promotes consensus.

Export complexity, industrial complexity and regional economic growth in Brazil

Research on productive structures has shown that economic complexity conditions economic growth. However, little is known about which type of complexity, e.g., export or industrial complexity, matters more for regional economic growth in a large emerging country like Brazil. Brazil exports natural resources and agricultural goods, but a large share of the employment derives from services, non-tradables, and within-country manufacturing trade. Here, we use a large dataset on Brazil's formal labor market, including approximately 100 million workers and 581 industries, to reveal the patterns of export complexity, industrial complexity, and economic growth of 558 micro-regions between 2003 and 2019. Our results show that export complexity is more evenly spread than industrial complexity. Only a few -- mainly developed urban places -- have comparative advantages in sophisticated services. Regressions show that a region's industrial complexity is a significant predictor for 3-year growth prospects, but export complexity is not. Moreover, economic complexity in neighboring regions is significantly associated with economic growth. The results show export complexity does not appropriately depict Brazil's knowledge base and growth opportunities. Instead, promoting the sophistication of the heterogeneous regional industrial structures and development spillovers is a key to growth.

We report on a new search for continuous gravitational waves from NS 1987A, the neutron star born in SN 1987A, using open data from Advanced LIGO and Virgo's third observing run (O3). The search covered frequencies from 35-1050 Hz, more than five times the band of the only previous gravitational wave search to constrain NS 1987A [B. J. Owen et al., ApJL 935, L7 (2022)]. It used an improved code and coherently integrated from 5.10 days to 14.85 days depending on frequency. No astrophysical signals were detected. By expanding the frequency range and using O3 data, this search improved on strain upper limits from the previous search and was sensitive at the highest frequencies to ellipticities of 1.6e-5 and r-mode amplitudes of 4.4e-4, both an order of magnitude improvement over the previous search and both well within the range of theoretical predictions.

Thoracic aortic aneurysm (TAA) is a fatal disease which potentially leads to dissection or rupture through progressive enlargement of the aorta. It is usually asymptomatic and screening recommendation are limited. The gold-standard evaluation is performed by computed tomography angiography (CTA) and radiologists time-consuming assessment. Scans for other indications could help on this screening, however if acquired without contrast enhancement or with low dose protocol, it can make the clinical evaluation difficult, besides increasing the scans quantity for the radiologists. In this study, it was selected 587 unique CT scans including control and TAA patients, acquired with low and standard dose protocols, with or without contrast enhancement. A novel segmentation model, DeepVox, exhibited dice score coefficients of 0.932 and 0.897 for development and test sets, respectively, with faster training speed in comparison to models reported in the literature. The novel TAA classification model, SAVE-CT, presented accuracies of 0.930 and 0.922 for development and test sets, respectively, using only the binary segmentation mask from DeepVox as input, without hand-engineered features. These two models together are a potential approach for TAA screening, as they can handle variable number of slices as input, handling thoracic and thoracoabdominal sequences, in a fully automated contrast- and dose-independent evaluation. This may assist to decrease TAA mortality and prioritize the evaluation queue of patients for radiologists.

Complex adaptive systems (CASs), from ecosystems to economies, are open systems and inherently dependent on external conditions. While a system can transition from one state to another based on the magnitude of change in external conditions, the rate of change -- irrespective of magnitude -- may also lead to system state changes due to a phenomenon known as a rate-induced transition (RIT). This study presents a novel framework that captures RITs in CASs through a local model and a network extension where each node contributes to the structural adaptability of others. Our findings reveal how RITs occur at a critical environmental change rate, with lower-degree nodes tipping first due to fewer connections and reduced adaptive capacity. High-degree nodes tip later as their adaptability sources (lower-degree nodes) collapse. This pattern persists across various network structures. Our study calls for an extended perspective when managing CASs, emphasizing the need to focus not only on thresholds of external conditions but also the rate at which those conditions change, particularly in the context of the collapse of surrounding systems that contribute to the focal system's resilience. Our analytical method opens a path to designing management policies that mitigate RIT impacts and enhance resilience in ecological, social, and socioecological systems. These policies could include controlling environmental change rates, fostering system adaptability, implementing adaptive management strategies, and building capacity and knowledge exchange. Our study contributes to the understanding of RIT dynamics and informs effective management strategies for complex adaptive systems in the face of rapid environmental change.

Ubiquitous in most superconducting materials and a common result of nanofabrication processes, weak-links are known for their limiting effects on the transport of electric currents. Still, they are at the root of key features of superconducting technology. By performing quantitative magneto-optical imaging experiments and thermomagnetic model simulations, we correlate the existence of local maxima in the magnetization loops of FIB-patterned Nb films to a magnetic field-induced weak-to-strong-link transformation increasing their critical current. This phenomenon arises from the nanoscale interaction between quantized magnetic flux lines and FIB-induced modifications of the device microstructure. Under an ac drive field, this leads to a rectified vortex motion along the weak-link. The reported tunable effect can be exploited in the development of new superconducting electronic devices, such as flux pumps and valves, to attenuate or amplify the supercurrent through a circuit element, and as a strategy to enhance the critical current in weak-link-bearing devices.

Aquaporins (AQPs) are a family of transmembrane channels that are found from archaea, eubacteria, and fungi kingdoms to plants and animals. These proteins play a major role in water and small solutes transport across biological cell membranes and maintain the osmotic balance of living cells. In this sense, many works in recent years have been devoted to understanding their behavior, including in plants, where 5 major groups of AQPs have been identified, whose physiological function details still have open questions waiting for an answer. In this direction, we observed in the literature very few Molecular Modeling studies focusing on plant AQPs. It creates a gap in the proper depiction of AQPs since Molecular Simulations allow us to get information that is usually inaccessible by experiments. Likewise, many efforts have been made to create artificial nanochannels with improved properties. It has the potential to help humanity (and plants) to face water stress -- a current problem that will be worsened by Climate Change. In this short review, we will revisit and discuss important computational studies about plant aquaporins and artificial transmembrane channels. With this, we aim to show how the Molecular Modeling community can (and should) help to understand plants' AQPs properties and function and how we can create new nanotechnology-based artificial channels.

During the last decades the industry has seen the number of Earth orbiting satellites rise, mostly due to the need to monitor Earth as well as to establish global communication networks. Nano, micro, and small satellites have been a prime tool for answering these needs, with large and mega constellations planned, leading to a potential launch gap. An effective and commercially appealing solution is the development of small launchers, as these can complement the current available launch opportunity offer, serving a large pool of different types of clients, with a flexible and custom service that large conventional launchers cannot adequately assure. Rocket Factory Augsburg has partnered with CEiiA for the development of several structures for the RFA One rocket. The objective has been the design of solutions that are low-cost, light, and custom-made, applying design and manufacturing concepts as well as technologies from other industries, like the aeronautical and automotive, to the aerospace one. This allows for the implementation of a New Space approach to the launcher segment, while also building a supply chain and a set of solutions that enables the industrialisation of such structures for this and future small launchers. The two main systems under development have been a versatile Kick-Stage, for payload carrying and orbit insertion, and a sturdy Payload Fairing. Even though the use of components off-the-shelf have been widely accepted in the space industry for satellites, these two systems pose different challenges as they must be: highly reliable during the most extreme conditions imposed by the launch, so that they can be considered safe to launch all types of payloads. This paper thus dives deep on the solutions developed in the last few years, presenting also lessons learned during the manufacturing and testing of these structures.

Thickness uniformity is regarded as an important parameter in designing thin film devices. However, some applications based on films with non-uniform thickness have recently emerged, such as gas sensors and optimized materials based on the gradual change of film composition. This work deals with superconducting Pb thin films with a thickness gradient prepared with the aid of a diffuse stencil mask. Atomic Force Microscopy and Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy show variations ranging from 90~nm to 154~nm. Quantitative magneto-optical images reveal interesting features during both the abrupt and the smooth penetration regimes of magnetic flux, as well as the thickness-dependent critical current density ($J_c$). In addition, we observe a gradual superconducting transition as the upper critical field is progressively reached for certain thicknesses. Furthermore, the hysteresis observed for triggering flux avalanches when increasing and decreasing magnetic fields is also accounted for by the $J_c$ profile evolution along the thickness gradient. Numerical simulations based on the Thermomagnetic Model are in fair agreement with the experimental data. These findings demonstrate that wedge-shaped films are a viable approach to investigate, in a continuous fashion, thickness-dependent properties of a superconducting materials.

We report on a search for continuous gravitational waves (GWs) from NS 1987A, the neutron star born in SN 1987A. The search covered a frequency band of 75-275 Hz, included a wide range of spin-down parameters for the first time, and coherently integrated 12.8 days of data below 125 Hz and 8.7 days of data above 125 Hz from the second Advanced LIGO observing run. We found no astrophysical signal. We set upper limits on GW emission as tight as an intrinsic strain of $2\times10^{-25}$ at 90\% confidence. The large spin-down parameter space makes this search the first astrophysically consistent one for continuous GWs from NS 1987A. Our upper limits are the first consistent ones to beat an analog of the spin-down limit based on the age of the neutron star, and hence are the first GW observations to put new constraints on NS 1987A.

Recent studies have found evidence of a negative association between economic complexity and inequality at the country level. Moreover, evidence suggests that sophisticated economies tend to outsource products that are less desirable (e.g. in terms of wage and inequality effects), and instead focus on complex products requiring networks of skilled labor and more inclusive institutions. Yet the negative association between economic complexity and inequality on a coarse scale could hide important dynamics at a fine-grained level. Complex economic activities are difficult to develop and tend to concentrate spatially, leading to 'winner-take-most' effects that spur regional inequality in countries. Large, complex cities tend to attract both high- and low-skills activities and workers, and are also associated with higher levels of hierarchies, competition, and skill premiums. As a result, the association between complexity and inequality reverses at regional scales; in other words, more complex regions tend to be more unequal. Ideas from polarization theories, institutional changes, and urban scaling literature can help to understand this paradox, while new methods from economic complexity and relatedness can help identify inclusive growth constraints and opportunities.

Deep learning has remarkably advanced in the last few years, supported by large labeled data sets. These data sets are precious yet scarce because of the time-consuming labeling procedures, discouraging researchers from producing them. This scarcity is especially true in dentistry, where deep learning applications are still in an embryonic stage. Motivated by this background, we address in this study the construction of a public data set of dental panoramic radiographs. Our objects of interest are the teeth, which are segmented and numbered, as they are the primary targets for dentists when screening a panoramic radiograph. We benefited from the human-in-the-loop (HITL) concept to expedite the labeling procedure, using predictions from deep neural networks as provisional labels, later verified by human annotators. All the gathering and labeling procedures of this novel data set is thoroughly analyzed. The results were consistent and behaved as expected: At each HITL iteration, the model predictions improved. Our results demonstrated a 51% labeling time reduction using HITL, saving us more than 390 continuous working hours. In a novel online platform, called OdontoAI, created to work as task central for this novel data set, we released 4,000 images, from which 2,000 have their labels publicly available for model fitting. The labels of the other 2,000 images are private and used for model evaluation considering instance and semantic segmentation and numbering. To the best of our knowledge, this is the largest-scale publicly available data set for panoramic radiographs, and the OdontoAI is the first platform of its kind in dentistry.

Research in Data Envelopment Analysis has created rankings of the ecological efficiency of countries' economies. At the same time, research in economic complexity has provided new methods to depict productive structures and has analyzed how economic diversification and sophistication affect environmental pollution indicators. However, no research so far has compared the ecological efficiency of countries with similar productive structures and levels of economic complexity, combining the strengths of both approaches. In this article, we use data on 774 different types of exports, CO2 emissions, and the ecological footprint of 99 countries to create a relative ecological pollution ranking (REPR). Moreover, we use methods from network science to reveal a benchmark network of the best learning partners based on country pairs with a large extent of export similarity, yet significant differences in pollution values. This is important because it helps to reveal adequate benchmark countries for efficiency improvements and cleaner production, considering that countries may specialize in substantially different types of economic activities. Finally, the article (i) illustrates large efficiency improvements within current global output levels, (ii) helps to identify countries that can best learn from each other, and (iii) improves the information base in international negotiations for the sake of a clean global production system.

The young star PDS110 in the Ori OB1a association underwent two similar eclipses in 2008 and 2011, each of which lasted for a period of at least 25 days. One plausible explanation for these events is that the star was eclipsed by an unseen giant planet (named PDS110b) circled by a ring system that fills a large fraction of its Hill sphere. Through thousands of numerical simulations of the three-body problem, we constrain the mass and eccentricity of this planet as well the size and inclination of its ring, parameters that are not well determined by the observational data alone. We carried out a broad range of different configurations for the PDS110b ring system and ruled out all that did not match with the observations. The result shows that the ring system could be prograde or retrograde; the preferred solution is that the ring has an inclination lower than $60^\circ$ and a radius between 0.1 and 0.2 au and that the planet is more massive than $35 M_\mathrm{Jup}$ and has a low eccentricity (<0.05).

Fraud in public funding can have deleterious consequences for the economic, social, and political well-being of societies. Fraudulent activity associated with public procurement contracts accounts for losses of billions of euros every year. Thus, it is of utmost relevance to explore analytical frameworks that can help public authorities identify agents that are more susceptible to incur in irregular activities. Here, we use standard network science methods to study the co-biding relationships between firms that participate in public tenders issued by the $184$ municipalities of the State of Ceará (Brazil) between 2015 and 2019. We identify $22$ groups/communities of firms with similar patterns of procurement activity, defined by their geographic and activity scopes. The profiling of the communities allows us to highlight groups that are more susceptible to market manipulation and irregular activities. Our work reinforces the potential application of network analysis in policy to unfold the complex nature of relationships between market agents in a scenario of scarce data.

One strategy to overcome this problem is to provide alternative feedback mechanisms to convey information respective to the absent limb. To address this issue, we developed a Biofeedback system for the rehabilitation of transfemoral amputees, controlled via electromyographic activity from the leg muscles, that can provide real-time visual and/or vibratory feedback for the user. In this study, we tested this device with able-bodied individuals performing an adapted version of the clinical protocol. Our idea was to test the effectiveness of combining vibratory and visual feedbacks and how task difficulty affects overall performance. Our results show no negative interference combining both feedback modalities, and that performance peaked at the intermediate difficulty. These results provide powerful insights of what can be expected with the population of amputee people and will help in the final steps of protocol development. Our goal is to use this biofeedback system to engage another sensory modality in the process of spatial representation of a virtual leg, bypassing the lack of information associated with the disruption of afferent pathways following amputation.

Public procurement refers to the purchase by public sector entities, such as government departments or local authorities, of Services, Goods, or Works. It accounts for a significant share of OECD countries' expenditures. However, while governments are expected to execute them as efficiently as possible, there is a lack of methodologies for an adequate comparison of procurement activity between institutions at different scales, which represents a challenge for policymakers and academics. Here, we propose using methods from urban scaling laws literature to study public procurement activity among 278 Portuguese municipalities between 2011 and 2018. We find that public procurement expenditure scales sub-linearly with population size, indicating an economy of scale for public spending as cities increase their population size. Moreover, when looking at the municipal Scale-Adjusted Indicators (the deviations from the scaling laws) by contract type -- Works, Goods, and Services -- we obtain a new local characterization of municipalities based on the similarity of procurement activity. These results make up a framework for quantitatively studying local public expenditure by enabling policymakers a more appropriate ground for comparative analysis.

In recent years, new and important perspectives were introduced in the field of neuroimaging with the emergence of the connectionist approach. In this new context, it is important to know not only which brain areas are activated by a particular stimulus but, mainly, how these areas are structurally and functionally connected, distributed, and organized in relation to other areas. Additionally, the arrangement of the network elements, i.e., its topology, and the dynamics they give rise to are also important. This new approach is called connectomics. It brings together a series of techniques and methodologies capable of systematizing, from the different types of signals and images of the nervous system, how neuronal units to brain areas are connected. Through this approach, the different patterns of connectivity can be graphically and mathematically represented by the so-called connectomes. The connectome uses quantitative metrics to evaluate structural and functional information from images of neural tracts and pathways or signals from the metabolic and/or electrophysiologic activity of cell populations or brain areas. Besides, with adequate treatment of this information, it is also possible to infer causal relationships. In this way, structural and functional evaluations are complementary descriptions which, together, represent the anatomic and physiologic neural properties, establishing a new paradigm for understanding how the brain functions by looking at brain connections. Here, we highlight five critical elements of a network that allows an integrative analysis, focusing mainly on a functional description. These elements include; (i) the properties of its nodes; (ii) the metrics for connectivity and coupling between nodes; (iii) the network topologies; (iv) the network dynamics and (v) the interconnections between different domains and scales of network representations.

The rate of adoption of new information depends on reinforcement from multiple sources in a way that often cannot be described by simple contagion processes. In such cases, contagion is said to be complex. Complex contagion happens in the diffusion of human behaviours, innovations, and knowledge. Based on that evidence, we propose a model that considers multiple, potentially asymmetric, and competing contagion processes and analyse its respective population-wide dynamics, bringing together ideas from complex contagion, opinion dynamics, evolutionary game theory, and language competition by shifting the focus from individuals to the properties of the diffusing processes. We show that our model spans a dynamical space in which the population exhibits patterns of consensus, dominance, and, importantly, different types of polarisation, a more diverse dynamical environment that contrasts with single simple contagion processes. We show how these patterns emerge and how different population structures modify them through a natural development of spatial correlations: structured interactions increase the range of the dominance regime by reducing that of dynamic polarisation, tight modular structures can generate structural polarisation, depending on the interplay between fundamental properties of the processes and the modularity of the interaction network.

Is it possible to derive organizing principles of higher education systems from the applicants' choices? Here we introduce the Higher Education Space (HES) as a way to describe the complex relationship between degree programs. The HES is based on the application of methods from network science to data on the revealed preferences of applicants to the higher education systems of Chile and Portugal. Our work reveals: 1) the existence of a positive assortment of features -- such as gender balance, application scores, unemployment levels, demand-supply ratio, etc -- along the network structure of the HES; 2) that the decaying of the prevalence level of a feature from a focal degree program extends beyond the dyadic relationships captured by the HES; 3) temporal variations in different features do not spillover/propagate throughout the system in the same way; 4) differences in unemployment levels reported among pairs of degree programs are minimized when taking into consideration the connectivity structure of the HES, largely outperforming the differences in matched pairs using traditional similarity measures; and 5) grouping of degree programs based in the network structure of the HES provides an applicant perspective that complements existing classification systems. Our findings support the HES as a multi-dimensional framework that can effectively contribute to the governance of higher education systems.

Diffusion on complex networks is often modeled as a stochastic process. Yet, recent work on strategic diffusion emphasizes the decision power of agents and treats diffusion as a strategic problem. Here we study the computational aspects of strategic diffusion, i.e., finding the optimal sequence of nodes to activate a network in the minimum time. We prove that finding an optimal solution to this problem is NP-complete in a general case. To overcome this computational difficulty, we present an algorithm to compute an optimal solution based on a dynamic programming technique. We also show that the problem is fixed parameter-tractable when parametrized by the product of the treewidth and maximum degree. We analyze the possibility of developing an efficient approximation algorithm and show that two heuristic algorithms proposed so far cannot have better than a logarithmic approximation guarantee. Finally, we prove that the problem does not admit better than a logarithmic approximation, unless P=NP.

Designing mechanisms that leverage cooperation between agents has been a long-lasting goal in Multiagent Systems. The task is especially challenging when agents are selfish, lack common goals and face social dilemmas, i.e., situations in which individual interest conflicts with social welfare. Past works explored mechanisms that explain cooperation in biological and social systems, providing important clues for the aim of designing cooperative artificial societies. In particular, several works show that cooperation is able to emerge when specific network structures underlie agents' interactions. Notwithstanding, social dilemmas in which defection is highly tempting still pose challenges concerning the effective sustainability of cooperation. Here we propose a new redistribution mechanism that can be applied in structured populations of agents. Importantly, we show that, when implemented locally (i.e., agents share a fraction of their wealth surplus with their nearest neighbors), redistribution excels in promoting cooperation under regimes where, before, only defection prevailed.

Countries tend to diversify their exports by entering products that are related to their current exports. Yet this average behavior is not representative of every diversification path. In this paper, we introduce a method to identify periods when countries enter unrelated products. We analyze the economic diversification paths of 93 countries between 1965 and 2014 and find that countries enter unrelated products in only about 7.2% of all observations. We find that countries enter more unrelated products when they are at an intermediate level of economic development, and when they have higher levels of human capital. Finally, we ask whether countries entering more unrelated products grow faster than those entering only related products. The data shows that countries that enter more unrelated activities experience a small but significant increase in future economic growth, compared to countries with a similar level of income, human capital, capital stock per worker, and economic complexity.

The magneto-optical imaging data is complemented with and compared to scanning Hall probe microscopy measurements. Comprehensive protocols have been developed for calibrating, testing, and converting Faraday rotation data to magnetic field maps. Applied to the acquired data, they reveal the comparatively weaker magnetic response of the superconductor from the background of larger fields and field gradients generated by the magnetic layer.

Countries and cities are likely to enter economic activities that are related to those that are already present in them. Yet, while these path dependencies are universally acknowledged, we lack an understanding of the diversification strategies that can optimally balance the development of related and unrelated activities. Here, we develop algorithms to identify the activities that are optimal to target at each time step. We find that the strategies that minimize the total time needed to diversify an economy target highly connected activities during a narrow and specific time window. We compare the strategies suggested by our model with the strategies followed by countries in the diversification of their exports and research activities, finding that countries follow strategies that are close to the ones suggested by the model. These findings add to our understanding of economic diversification and also to our general understanding of diffusion in networks.

In 1990, Germany began the reunification of two separate research systems. In this study, we explore the factors predicting the East-West integration of academic fields by examining the evolution of Germany's co-authorship network between 1974 and 2014. We find that the unification of the German research network accelerated rapidly during the 1990s, but then stagnated at an intermediate level of integration. We then study the integration of the 20 largest academic fields (by number of publications prior to 1990), finding an inverted U-shaped relationship between each field's East or West "dominance" (a measure of the East-West concentration of a field's scholarly output prior to 1990) and the fields' subsequent level of integration. We checked for the robustness of these results by running Monte Carlo simulations and a differences-in-differences analysis. Both methods confirmed that fields that were dominated by either West or East Germany prior to reunification integrated less than those whose output was balanced. Finally, we explored the origins of this inverted U-shaped relationship by considering the tendency of scholars from a given field to collaborate with scholars from similarly productive regions. These results shed light on the mechanisms governing the reintegration of research networks that were separated by institutions.

The liquid-liquid transition appears as a consequence of the non monotonic behavior of the density versus pressure isotherms with the increase of the attraction well. We found that the liquid-gas phase transition is Ising-like for all the CS potentials and its critical temperature increases with the increase of the attraction. No Ising-like behavior for the liquid-liquid phase transition was detected in the Monte Carlo simulations what might be due to the presence of stable solid phases.

The four fermion interaction is not perturbatively renormalizable and the model is taken as an effective field theory in the region of low momenta. Using Zimmerman procedure for reducing coupling constants, it is verified that, for small values of the Chern-Simons parameter, the origin is an infrared stable fixed point but changes to ultraviolet stable as $α$ becomes bigger than a critical $α_c$. Composite operators are also analyzed and it is shown that a specific four fermion interaction has an improved ultraviolet behavior as $N$ increases.

Abstract:
In 2+1 dimensions, for low momenta, using dimensional renormalization we study the effect of a Chern-Simons field on the perturbative expansion of fermions self interacting through a Gross Neveu coupling. For the case of just one fermion field, we verify that the dimension of operators of canonical dimension lower than three decreases as a function of the Chern-Simons coupling.
